The Houston Texans have their general manager. However, the search continues for their new coach.
Multiple reports have linked Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier to the Texans’ coaching vacancy.
Frazier has been with the Bills since 2017 when Sean McDermott was hired as coach. In addition to being the defensive coordinator, Frazier has also functioned as assistant head coach.
The Bills defense has finished ninth and eighth in yards the past two seasons, and eighth and seconds in points allowed over the past two years as well.
Buffalo earned its first playoff win since 1995 with a 27-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC wild-card on Saturday. The Bills defense wasn’t able to procure a turnover and quarterback Philip Rivers was not sacked once.
Frazier has experience as a coach. In 2010, he took over as the interim coach of the Minnesota Vikings, who fired Brad Childress with a 3-7 record. The Vikings finished 3-3 down the stretch, good enough for Frazier to land the full-time job. From 2011-13, the Vikings went 18-29-1 with their lone winning season coming in 2012 with a 10-6 record. Minnesota lost in the NFC wild-card at the Green Bay Packers, although Joe Webb had to start at quarterback in relief of an injured Christian Ponder.
At 61 years old, Frazier is entering a phase of his career where he may not get very many coaching chances.
