Texans have the perfect receiving trio for a deep passing game

The Houston Texans features three receivers in Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks, and Kenny Stills that can bring the deep passing game to life.

The Houston Texans are banking on having a deep passing game in 2020, and taking advantage of quarterback Deshaun Watson’s arm.

While there is a sense the Texans have the receivers to bring such a threat to life, more data comes out that demonstrates coach and general manager Bill O’Brien, along with his offensive coaches and scouts, knew what they were doing when they constructed the post-DeAndre Hopkins receiving corps.

According to research from CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr, who posted the results on Twitter, three of the Texans’ receivers are in the top-10 for average yards per touchdown since 2016 with 15 touchdowns as the qualifier.

Kenny Stills is No. 7 with 30.2, Brandin Cooks No. 9 with 27.0, and Will Fuller rounding out the list with 26.8.

“I think when you look at the people that we have in our offensive unit room right now, you’ve got a lot of explosive players there for us, guys that have unique skillsets, guys that are experienced and guys that have produced at a high level in this league,” offensive coordinator Tim Kelly told reporters on May 20. “It’s an exciting thing to be able to kind of sit back and watch those guys come together throughout this virtual offseason and learn the offense and kind of come together as one unit.”

The unit will have the firepower necessary to challenge the back end of defenses week in and week out. The one stumbling block that the Texans’ deep game could see is within their own ranks. Fuller has missed 22 games in his career due to injury, and he has never played a complete season since the Texans drafted him in Round 1 of the 2016 NFL Draft. Kelly will have to figure ways to make the deep ball still work in games where he doesn’t have his top three deep ball receivers.
