Houston Texans head coach David Culley knows Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen well.
Allen’s career began in 2018 after the Bills traded up at that year’s draft to select him at No. 7 overall. Culley ended up being Allen’s first QB coach in the pros during his rookie season.
Since then, Culley has gone on to be named the bench boss of the Texans, who will face Allen and the Bills in Week 4. Ahead of the meeting, Culley had plenty of good to say about his former student.
“He’s become one of the top quarterbacks in this league,” Culley said via Texans Wire. “I know when I had him as a rookie, he had everything that you want, and I’m not surprised that he is where he is at right now. I think I remember last year, he was maybe No. 2 in the league in MVP voting. He’s a heck of a player, has all the things you want.”
Culley added that even during Allen’s struggles as a rookie… he saw it.
“You knew developmentally that he was going to become what he has become right now, just with time. There were some fundamental things that he needed to correct, and obviously he’s corrected those right now. He’s playing at a very high level right now,” he said.
Culley and Allen’s time together ended after 2018 because the coach was poached. The Baltimore Ravens hired Culley and gave him a promotion.
At the time, some took that as a blessing in disguise because Culley did not have lengthy experience as a quarterbacks coach in the NFL. He spent the majority of his career as a wide receivers coach.
Regardless, both sides have moved on and now will look to to beat the other on Sunday.
Along with Culley, plenty of Texans defenders discussed facing Allen this week. Difficulties were mentioned.
Slot cornerback Desmond King recognized Allen’s dual-threat abilities.
“Knowing that he is not just a pocket QB. This is a guy that if nothing is open, he is going to run the ball and he’s not looking to slide. Like, this is a guy that’s very physical, a great quarterback, a guy that wants to run the ball and is going to get yards with it. So, we got to know that containing him is going to be very important and also making him uncomfortable in the pocket,” King said.
Defensive lineman Roy Lopez mentioned that he was impressed with Allen before it was cool.
“Josh Allen’s an incredible talent. That’s why people know he’s Josh Allen. I remember watching him in college and watching him in the NFL now. He’s learned as a player, as long as every other NFL player. He holds himself to a high standard, and he should. He’s a great player. He’s very athletic, he can throw a good ball, he’s confident and Buffalo loves him,” Lopez said.
