Texans coach David Culley says WR Chris Conley fits the offense

Houston Texans coach David Culley says that receiver Chris Conley is fitting in nicely with the new offense.

The Houston Texans needed to replace the speedy threat that they lost when receiver Will Fuller signed with the Miami Dolphins.

A wideout who has risen to the occasion, at least throughout the Texans’ 10 organized team activities sessions, is former Kansas City Chiefs third-round pick Chris Conley.

Whereas Fuller was 6-0, 184 pounds, Conley provides size to go along with his speed at 6-3, 205 pounds.

“He’s a big receiver,” coach David Culley told reporters on a Zoom call on Wednesday. “He’s a kid that can run. He’s had some experience in this league. He’s been productive. He kind of fits with what we want out there at that position. You want that kind of guy, not necessarily have to have that, but he fits what you want out there. He’s come in and he’s been what we thought he was prior to that and we’re very fortunate to have him here. He’s fit right in with that group and he’s been very, very good with our young guys here also.”

Conley spent the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, catching 87 passes for 1,246 yards and seven touchdowns through 31 games, 18 of which he started.

“He’s another one of those guys like [running back] Mark Ingram,” said Culley. “He’s a team guy. He’s a guy that would do anything that you need to do whether it’s special teams or whether it’s at his position. He’s one of those kinds of guys and he fits the mold of the kind of player that we want in this organization.”

Culley has experience coaching Conley in the NFL. From 2013-16, Culley was the receivers coach for the Chiefs. From 2015-18, Conley played 53 games for Kansas City, starting in 34 of them. The former Georgia Bulldog caught 104 for 1,238 yards and six touchdowns through his first four seasons with the AFC West club.
