Tennessee defeats Longwood, advances to play Michigan

Tennessee defeats Longwood and advances to play Michigan in second round.

No. 3 Tennessee (27-7) defeated 14th-seeded Longwood (26-7), 88-56, Thursday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The contest took place in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Tennessee is competing the South region of the NCAA Tournament. The Vols will play 11th-seeded Michigan in the second round Saturday. Michigan defeated Colorado State, 75-63, Thursday.

Tennessee led Longwood, 54-29, at halftime. Tennessee scored its highest point total of the season in the first half against Longwood.

Santiago Vescovi made four three-point attempts in the first half and Josiah-Jordan James connected on three.

James, Vescovi and John Fulkerson combined for 40 of Tennessee’s 54 first-half points on 15-for-20 shooting.

The Vols outscored Longwood, 34-27, in the second half.

Vescovi led Tennessee in scoring with 18 points. James scored 17 points, while Fulkerson finished with 15.

Vescovi was 6-of-8 in three-point attempts.
