Talking season is hype season for the Texas football program. That’s certainly the case this year as the team is seeing playoff predictions coming in from out of the blue.
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers is seeing high expectations of his own after a full season on the Forty Acres. Those expectations need context.
Last year Ewers looked like one of the best passers in the country against Alabama and Oklahoma. He certainly fooled me. At his best, the sky is the limit for the signal-caller. At his worst, life isn’t pretty for the Texas offense.
The Oklahoma State game provided a harsh dose of reality for the once elite prospect. Ewers went an abysmal 17-for-49 against the Cowboys, who had one of the worst defenses in the nation. It didn’t matter.
We don’t expect to see that Quinn Ewers again as he made gradual improvement the throughout the remainder of the season. Albeit, the performance illustrates there’s a wide range of play for the Longhorns star.
Texas should win 10 games, and Ewers should be the difference maker. Even so, he has a way to go in consistency before he is a top-five quarterback in college football.
He’s going to miss throws badly. He’s going to miss reads. But the Southlake graduate has all the ability to be the top quarterback in the Big 12 Conference.
