The Brooklyn Nets continue to scour the league in hopes of getting the huge haul they have been hoping to receive in terms of a huge Kevin Durant trade. The future Hall of Famer made his trade request on the day of free agency, but the Nets have not been blown away by any offers for him.
While Brooklyn is prepared to keep Durant on their roster and try again in the 2022-23 season, the reason why they haven’t been able to find any deals is that teams are a little worried that they might not be able to keep the superstar happy. Especially, considering everything the Nets have done to satisfy him.
Per NBA veteran reporter Marc Stein via his substack:
Why are the Nets having so much trouble generating the so-called historic haul they were expecting when it emerged just hours before the start of NBA free agency on June 30 that Durant wanted out of Brooklyn?
Some of it can be attributed to the fact that Durant’s most desired destinations — Phoenix and Miami — are contending teams less than flush with the sort of trade assets that the Nets covet. The persistent scuttle around the league, though, is that clubs interested in Durant mostly fear their ability to keep him content more than they feel any concern about his advancing age.
“If the Nets can’t keep him happy, after everything they’ve given him, how are we supposed to?” one Western Conference team official told me.
It makes sense as to why teams are beginning to have second thoughts about going all in on Durant. While he is obviously a terrific talent and he is somebody who can lift a franchise on his shoulders whenever he wants, how long can he be satisfied before he wants out again? Why would a team risk so much just to have him for a season or two?
The Minnesota Timberwolves rejected an offer from the Nets centered on Durant because the package was too much. At this point, Durant’s best bet is to just remain in Brooklyn and try again with Kyrie Irving and a very talented roster on paper.
