TE Blake Bell reunites with Chiefs on one-year deal

After spending one season with the Cowboys, TE Blake Bell is returning to the Chiefs on a one-year deal.

Former Oklahoma Sooner Blake Bell is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs. After the tight end spent a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, the Chiefs are bringing the “Belldozer” back on a one-year deal, according to SiriusXM’s Gabe Ikard.

After winning Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs, Bell headed to Dallas. He notched 11 catches for 110 yards with the Cowboys but stats do not tell his story. Bell was predominately used as an in-line blocker to assist Dallas’ makeshift offensive line with Dalton Schultz as the receiving tight end following Blake Jarwin’s injury. He helped disguise up front, seal the edge to create open running lanes, and chip/out-leverage in one-on-one matchups to catch a pass.

Again, in Andy Reid’s system, Bell served as a blocker in multiple tight end sets in 2019. Now back in Kansas City, he will a chance to win the No. 2 tight end spot behind Travis Kelce. The world saw how Patrick Mahomes was abused in the pocket by Tampa Bay all night long in Super Bowl LV. Having some additional protection up front with Bell’s skillset for the Chiefs will benefit their franchise quarterback.

For the Cowboys, they will be looking for a TE3. Jarwin and Schultz have the first two spots locked up and backup Sean McKeon is the likely candidate to take Bell’s place. The question is, does he have the blocking ability that Bell possessed? He will have to showcase that element during training camp.
