Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Michael Mayer vs. Ontaria Wilson

A tight end and a receiver with lackluster numbers. Will Sunday’s game look any different?

No one really knows what to expect at receiver for the season opener between Notre Dame and Florida State. The Irish’s most productive returning receiver is sophomore tight end Michael Mayer, which doesn’t exactly instill a lot of hope among the fanbase. Still, the Seminoles were one of the two opponents Mayer found the end zone against in 2020, so he at least has that going for him. The question is whether Jack Coan will consider him a go-to target for at least this opening game.

The Seminoles’ representative in this category, Ontaria Wilson, actually was their top receiver last season and actually plays the position. If you take a look at his numbers, you would think the best receiver for an ACC program would have a better showing. However, what you’re seeing is accurate, and Wilson topped 100 receiving yards only once. Yes, the Seminoles played only nine games, but these stats surely baffle even the most casual college football fan.
