What it’s like to explore The Narrows at Zion National Park

Discover The Narrows.

Zion National Park is one of the most beautiful places in America. It’s also one of the most visited national parks in the United States. As of 2022, the park ranked fourth on a list of the country’s most visited national parks.

So, what makes Zion National Park stand out against other beloved destinations, like the Great Smoky Mountains or the Grand Canyon? Well, while the park’s breathtaking sandstone rock formations certainly earn it a lot of love, hikers will tell you that their favorite parts of Zion are the magnificent trails. At spots like Angels Landing, hikers can challenge themselves to tackle a complicated trail and earn mind-blowing views for their efforts. Then, you have trails like the ones that pass through The Narrows of Zion Canyon. These treks present their own challenges and sights that make them irresistible to hikers. Here’s what you should know before visiting The Narrows at Zion National Park.

Bighorn sheep in Zion – how many can you spot in this photo?

A visitor to Zion National Park has shared an image showing how well bighorn sheep blend into the environment. How many can you spot in the image?

A visitor to Utah’s Zion National Park recently shared images from a trip in March, when she observed bighorn sheep from a highway turnout.

Some of Kris Clifford’s images are closeups, but one presents a wider view intended to show how well the animals blend into their environment.

How many bighorn sheep can you spot in the image posted above and immediately below? (Answer at the bottom of this post.)

Clifford, who is from Southern California, told FTW Outdoors that she had pulled over on the Zion – Mount Carmel Highway to enjoy the “scenic views” and look for sheep.

“I had been told there might be bighorn sheep along this road so I started looking around,” she said.

Desert bighorn sheep, which have inhabited the southwest for more than 12,000 years, have smaller bodies but longer legs and shorter coats than their Rocky Mountain relatives.

But they share the same extraordinary climbing and camouflage skills.

Desert bighorn sheep prefer the steep, rocky terrain of Zion’s east side because they’re less vulnerable to predators, such as mountain lions, while traversing sandstone cliffs.

“I had not noticed them when I parked,” Clifford continued. “I then spotted the larger male on the rock and at first I thought he was the only one.”

Clifford’s Facebook images clearly show more than one sheep. The wider shot, she said, “was just to show how well they blend, and that I was not close.”

She said that besides sheep, she spotted lots of deer, two juvenile California condors and a roadrunner.

The wider shot, with the sheep circled, is posted below.

What you need to know before embarking on an Angels Landing hike

Top tips for Zion’s beloved hiking destination.

Top-of-the-world views and the adrenaline rush of a challenging hike make Angels Landing one of Zion National Park’s most popular destinations. The constant crowds at this location even led the park to institute a permit program. If you want to experience the full Angels Landing hike, you need to plan for it.

Lucky guests who win the permit lottery can look forward to witnessing the area’s stunning scenery in person. But to reach Angels Landing, hikers must tackle some tricky terrain. Visitors will encounter steep switchbacks, daunting drop-offs, and narrow, chain-led pathways. If you’re planning an Angels Landing hike, set yourself up for success with the helpful tips below.

Ranking the 10 most visited national parks

Popular parks face off.

Every national park is special. Every national park is beautiful. But not all parks made it onto the National Park Service’s (NPS) list of 2022’s most visited national parks.

In 2022, NPS sites tallied over 311 million recreation visits. While many beloved locations contributed to that number, not all of them were national parks. Historic sites, national battlefields, scenic trails, and more also factor into NPS statistics. In fact, the most visited NPS site in 2022 was the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, which received over 15 million visits.

All of these areas are worth visiting, but today’s rankings focus solely on national parks. In descending order, the most visited national parks in 2022 were: 1. Great Smoky Mountains, 2. Grand Canyon, 3. Zion, 4. Rocky Mountain, 5. Acadia, 6. Yosemite, 7. Yellowstone, 8. Joshua Tree, 9. Cuyahoga Valley, and 10. Glacier. These bustling sites hosted the most recreation visits out of all 63 national parks.

Does “most visited” mean “best,” though? Not always. Find out which of these 10 highly visited parks Outdoors Wire ranks as its favorites in the list below.

BASE jumper’s reckless flight at Zion costs him $5,000

Marshall Miller performed an unlawful BASE jump in Zion National Park that possibly disrupted wildlife.

Marshall Miller, described as a professional athlete, performed an unprofessional and unlawful BASE jump in Zion National Park that possibly endangered protected falcons and California condors with his flight over a nesting area, for which he’ll pay the price.

Miller, who jumped off the Great White Throne wearing a wingsuit on March 28, flew a distance before deploying a parachute and landing in an area below Angels Landing, the National Park Service announced Wednesday.

The cliff face below Angels Landing is a known nesting area where California condor chick No. 1,000 took its first flight from its nest last September, marking the first wild-hatched chick to successfully fledge within Zion since recovery efforts began in the late 1990s and likely the first in Zion in over 100 years.

Climbing routes on the Great White Throne were closed to all visitors March 1 due to nesting peregrine falcons, which are sensitive to disturbances during nesting season.

“BASE jumping near nesting falcons and condors increases the chances of these parents being displaced or flushed from their nest or roost site which will increase the nest’s vulnerability to predators and could potentially result in nest failure,” said Zion National Park biologist Janice Stroud-Settles.

On March 28, Zion rangers received a tip that three were planning to BASE jump off either the Great White Throne or Cable Mountain, and they staked out these locations. One jumper was observed on the former. Miller initially eluded rangers but was apprehended later that night.

BASE jumping is illegal in all national parks. Miller, of Salt Lake City, pled guilty to this and to violating a climbing closure. He also admitted to illegally jumping off Lady Mountain in January 2018. Miller was ordered by the court to pay a $5,000 fine and was banned from Zion for two years. He was also threatened with jail for any subsequent offenses.

“BASE jumping is an extremely dangerous sport,” said Zion National Park Chief Ranger Daniel Fagergren. “When a fatality occurs, the Search and Rescue Team often has to manage an additional amount of risk while recovering the body from the extreme vertical terrain. We would like to thank the United States Attorney’s Office in Saint George, Utah, for their support in prosecuting this important case.”

Two people have died BASE jumping in Zion since 2013.

“The people in the park were awesome to work with and I’ll respect their wishes not to have BASE jumpers in the park,” Miller told the Associated Press.

“I do this in a safe way, but unfortunately in our beautiful national parks it’s illegal to do this activity. I wish it was legal, of course, but that’s a little above my pay-grade to change the laws on that.”
