Cardinals activate WR Zay Jones to active roster

Jones’ return might be critical with Marvin Harrison Jr. in concussion protocol.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Zay Jones was reinstated last week from his five-game suspension. Now he is officially on the active roster. The Cardinals activated him after using the one-game exemption they had to give him some practice time after five weeks of not being with the team.

Because they had released receiver Chris Moore last week, they did not need to make a corresponding roster move.

His return is timely and could be essential.

Rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. is currently in concussion protocol, making his availability for the Cardinals’ next game on Monday night at home against the L.A. Chargers uncertain.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Monday, “it’s going to be good” getting Jones back.

“He is a good player. He can play three spots. He’s a playmaker. He is a consistent vet (from) what he’s shown. We’re excited to get him back,” he said.

Hampered by injuries last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones caught 34 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns in only nine games. However, he is the most accomplished receiver on the roster, having a career-high of 82 receptions for 823 yards in 2022, scoring five touchdowns.

No Zay Jones, no Darius Robinson for Cardinals vs. Packers

The Cardinals will keep WR Zay Jones and rookie DL Darius Robinson off the active roster this weekend as they face the Green Bay Packers.

The Arizona Cardinals had a pair of players who could have given the team a boost in their trip to Green Bay this weekend. However, neither player will be able to go.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters Friday that receiver Zay Jones and rookie defensive lineman Darius Robinson will not play on Sunday.

Jones was reinstated from his five-game suspension to start the season but the team was granted a one-game exemption for him. Gannon said “it was good to get him out there” but that they were “going to be smart” with him. He will not be activated.

Robinson, who had his practice window opened Wednesday in a return from injured reserve after missing five games with a calf injury, “has some discomfort” so he will not be activated.

We will have to wait for the Cardinals’ Monday night game against the Los Angeles Chargers for Jones’ 2024 debut and at least that long for Robinson’s debut.

Cardinals getting WR Zay Jones back from 5-game suspension

Jones’ suspension was lifted and the Cardinals have until next Monday to activate him.

The Arizona Cardinals offense will get a lift this week with the return of wide receiver Zay Jones to the practice field after serving a five-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

On Monday, the league lifted the suspension and the Cardinals received a one-game roster exemption, so Jones doesn’t immediately count on the 53-man roster. The exemption expires next Monday (Oct. 14), so to play Sunday in Green Bay, it would have to be lifted by Saturday.

Whenever he becomes officially active, a corresponding move will have to be made on the roster whether it’s a player being released or placed on injured reserve.

The most likely cut victim would be wide receiver Chris Moore, who has played only 27 offensive snaps in five games and doesn’t have a reception. He also hasn’t been on the field for any special teams snaps.

Rookie wide receiver Xavier Weaver has yet to be active for any games, but his potential should keep him on the team.

Jones has been around the team for the last two weeks and been able to attend meetings and work out, but not practice.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Monday, “We’ll find the right ways to deploy him. He’s a playmaker for us, he can play all three positions and he makes plays. So, absolutely, I’m excited to get him back.”

Asked if the decision to activate Jones this week will be determined after evaluating him in practice, Gannon said, “I think so. That’s fair to say.”

Cardinals WR Zay Jones suspended 1st 5 games of 2024 season

Jones will miss the first five games of the 2024 season related to a domestic battery charge from last November that was later dropped.

The Arizona Cardinals have lost receiver Zay Jones to start the season. The league announced he was suspended for the first five games of the season under the league’s personal conduct policy.

Next week, he will be placed on an exempt list and will not be able to be at the team facility or practice until after the Cardinals play the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5.

It is related to a domestic battery arrest last November while he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He allegedly caused an injury to the neck of the mother of his child. Those charges were later dropped, but the league investigated and clearly found there was reason to punish him under the personal conduct policy.

He will forfeit the first five weeks of his salary, scheduled to be $1.41 million. The $650,000 in salary guarantees are now voided.

Currently fourth on the Cardinals’ receiver depth chart, the team will need someone to step up in his place and it potentially opens a roster spot for someone like Zach Pascal or Tejhaun Palmer.

NFL suspends former Jaguars WR for five games

NFL suspends former Jaguars WR for five games

The NFL has suspended Cardinals and former Jaguars wide receiver Zay Jones for the first five games of the 2024 season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Friday.

The Florida State Attorney’s office in March declined to prosecute Jones on a misdemeanor domestic battery with bodily harm charge, for which he was arrested last November while playing with the Jaguars.

The NFL suspended Jones following its own investigation into the matter, a standard operating procedure, according to Pelissero.

Per Michael DiRocco of ESPN, the arrest report detailed an alleged physical altercation between Jones and the mother of his child in which she was left with “small scratches on the … neck, consistent with marks from a fingernail” on her neck, amid an argument.

Jones did not face internal discipline from the Jaguars but missed eight games during the season while battling multiple injuries, first hurting his knee in Week 2 then his hamstring in Week 15.

He caught 34 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns on the campaign, before his April release, a move that freed Jacksonville nearly $4.2 million in 2024 salary cap space.

Jones proceeded to sign with Arizona following a free agency tour in May.

Jones posted 116 receptions for 1,144 yards and seven touchdowns over 25 appearances and two seasons with Jacksonville, raising his seven-year statistical totals to 287 receptions for 3,028 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Fantasy football outlook: Arizona Cardinals WR preview

A prized rookie headlines an unheralded receiving corps in the desert.

The Arizona Cardinals‘ wide receivers room has been a turnstile in recent years. Last year’s top two wide receivers both left – Marquise Brown (free agency) and Rondale Moore (trade). Entering 2024, the Cardinals have a new No. 1 wide receiver in fourth overall draft pick Marvin Harrison Jr., who is already being anointed as the ”next big thing” in Arizona.

Harrison joins a pair of in-house returnees – Michael Wilson and Greg Dortch. Arizona added a pair of veterans in free agency with low-investment signings of Zay Jones and Zach Pascal. There are some questions how the depth charter will play out for WR2 through WR5, but there’s no question that Harrison is the go-to guy.

WR Zay Jones’ contract worth less than originally reported

The original report of being worth up to $4.25 million was inaccurate. It is only worth $2.25 million.

When wide receiver Zay Jones was signed by the Arizona Cardinals on May 13, initial reports claimed the contract was worth “up to” $4.25 million with the “up to” supposedly including $2 million of potential incentives.

That turned out not to be accurate. Cards Wire has learned there are no incentives in the contract as submitted to the NFLPA, although as managing editor Jess Root reported recently, there are $20,000 per-game active roster bonuses available for a maximum total of $340,000.

That story had the specifics of the one-year, $2.25 million contract that includes $1.15 million guaranteed: $650,000 of the $1.41 million base salary and a $500,000 signing bonus.

However, the total cap charge is $2.09 million instead of $2.25 million since Jones played nine games in 2023, so only $180,000 of the per-game bonuses are charged against the cap. Assuming he makes the team, every $20,000 bonus paid after the eighth game would count against the 2025 cap for a maximum $160,000.

Jones’ one-year deal is very similar to the one signed by wide receiver Chris Moore on March 18. Moore is 6-foot-1, 200 and was a fourth-round pick by the Ravens in 2016. He turns 31 on June 16.

Jones is 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and was a second-round pick by the Bills in 2017. He turned 29 on March 30 and has been more productive during the seven seasons he’s played with the Bills, Raiders and Jaguars. Jones has played 104 games with 67 starts, catching 287 passes for $3,028 yards (10.6 average) and 18 touchdowns.

Moore has played 106 games with 18 starts in eight seasons with the Ravens, Texans and Titans. He has 138 receptions for 1,710 yards (12.4 average) and eight touchdowns.

Moore’s contract is worth $2 million with $750,000 guaranteed: $250,000 of his $1.28 million base salary and a $500,000 signing bonus. His per-game $10,000 roster bonuses provide a maximum payout of $170,000 that all is charged against the cap because he played all 17 games last season. Moore also has a $50,000 offseason workout bonus.

His cap charge is the $2 million total value of the deal.

WR Zay Jones named top bounce-back candidate for 2024

Jones had over 800 yards in 2022 but struggled with injuries in 2023. With a prominent role expected on offense in Arizona, he could be good.

The Arizona Cardinals were not expected to be good last season and, while they were scrappy and competitive in 2023, their 4-13 record proved that they were a bad team.

They hope to bounce back after two straight four-win seasons. To do that, they need players to make improvements. Some players could bounce back.

Pro Football Focus looked at who is the most likely player to bounce back for each team from a disappointing 2023.

Newly signed receiver Zay Jones is the pick.

It was difficult to find a Cardinals player who was good in prior years and struggled in 2023, largely because of the team’s youth. But Jones is probably as good a bet as any.

With Jacksonville in 2022, he posted a career-best 82 catches for 823 yards, not to mention 1.47 yards per route run. However, 2023 proved more challenging, with Jones playing just 474 snaps and accruing 62 targets.

Even though the Cardinals now boast superstar Marvin Harrison Jr., Jones could easily become the team’s WR2 and help work underneath to complement the rookie, especially as he gets acclimated early on.

Jones was very productive in 2022 and that is what the Cardinals saw in him when they signed him. He is the most accomplished receiver on the roster. Harrison is a rookie and Wilson and Dortch have never reached 600 yards in a season.

Zach Pascal has two 600-yard seasons in his career, but he had 19 combined catches over the last two seasons.

Who are other bounceback candidates?

You could say quarterback Kyler Murray because he only played in eight games and was not good until his final three games.

Likewise, you could look at linebacker Kyzir White or safety Budda Baker, whose seasons were cut short due to injuries.

Likewise, Zaven Collins, who had a productive 2022 as an inside linebacker but moved to outside linebacker last year and was only okay, is another possibility. But that isn’t so much bouncing back because he was playing a new position as it is stepping up.

Jones is a great candidate to bounce back.

WR Zay Jones guaranteed more than $1.1M in deal with Cardinals

Zay Jones’ deal includes a $500,000 signing bonus and $650,000 in fully guaranteed salary.

The Arizona Cardinals expect wide receiver Zay Jones to make the finals and make an impact on the 2024 season. His one-year deal, reported initially as worth up to $4.25 million, is really a one-year deal worth a little more than $2 million but includes more than $1.1 million in guarantees.

According to Over the Cap, the Cardinals gave him $500,000 to sign and has $650,000 of his 2024 salary of $1.41 million fully guaranteed. He also will make $20,000 per game he is active (up to $340,000).

But with that much guaranteed, it shows that the Cardinals fully intend on him making the roster. It is not a prove-it-in-camp contract.

Not noted by Over the Cap are the roughly $2 million in incentives.

Our own Howard Balzer will have those details in the days to come.

WR Zay Jones adds character, versatility, production to Cardinals

Head coach Jonathan spoke about the signing of veteran receiver Zay Jones on Monday before OTAs began.

The Arizona Cardinals signed veteran receiver Zay Jones recently and he is already the most accomplished NFL receiver on the team. Head coach Jonathan Gannon was asked about him when he spoke to reporters on Monday before the start of voluntary OTAs.

“With Zay, you’ll quickly find out he fits the price of admission here,” Gannon said, referring to what he considers a prerequisite to be on the team — being a team-first player. “His football character is through the roof. He’s extremely smart, obviously played at a high level for a good amount of time here.”

He brings versatility.

“He’s really a three-poistion guy. He’s smart enough to play all of it,” Gannon said. “He’s played multiple positions throughout his career and had production at all of them.”

He can play the X, the Z and inside in the slot. He played inside and out with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Last season, his year was marred by injuries — a knee injury, cartilage damage and a hamstring issue.

He had over 800 yards in 2022. No other receiver has had more than 600 in a season in the NFL other than Zach Pascal, who has had 19 receptions over the last two seasons.

At 29 years old, he adds experience. He has size and athleticism. He can play multiple positions. If he can stay healthy, he will make a very nice addition to the receiver room.
