Za’Darius Smith’s absence opens the door for Packers OLB Rashan Gary

The Packers are sending Za’Darius Smith to injured reserve. The door is open for Rashan Gary to become a difference maker.

No team ever likes losing an impact player, but at least the Green Bay Packers have an ascending young talent ready to take advantage of the current injury situation.

According to coach Matt LaFleur, Za’Darius Smith’s lingering back injury will land on him on injured reserve, meaning he’ll miss at least three games and possibly more. The door is now wide open for Rashan Gary to be a full-time player for at least the next month.

Gary looked terrific to end last season, and he was one of the few disruptive players for the Packers defense to open the 2021 season. His four pressures on only 16 pass-rushing snaps led the team against the New Orleans Saints in Week 1.

One two-play series stood out. On the first, Gary beat his blocker and stuffed a third-down run near the goal line. A play later, his immediate pressure on Jameis Winston nearly ruined the fourth down try.

Replacing Smith’s versatility as a rusher will be difficult to replace or replicate. The Packers used him all over the defensive front to create one-on-one matchups. He was especially effective against guards during obvious passing situations. Smith had a rare knack for knowing when to use quickness, when to use speed and when to use power as a rusher.

The Packers won’t ask Gary to be Smith. He’s his own player. But Gary brings a similar amount of effort and power to the outside linebacker position, and the Packers believe he’s still ascending as a pure pass-rusher.

This is why teams need more than two good rushers. Injuries happen, and a team can’t be handcuffed by one injury. In Gary and veteran Preston Smith, the Packers have two experienced edge rushers – one with ascending talent, and another with the right financial motivation for a big season.

It’s unclear how long Za’Darius Smith will be out of action. Back injuries are always tricky, and this thing has lingered on now for over a month. LaFleur said the Packers are planning on getting him back this year.

Some worry exists behind Gary and Preston Smith. The Packers got next to nothing from Jonathan Garvin and Chauncey Rivers during extended snaps over the preseason and in Week 1. The team is also adding Ladarius Hamilton, adding depth. But Hamilton has never played in a regular season game.

The depth won’t matter as much if Gary is a dominant full-time player.

The Packers have carefully engineered Gary’s progression as a young edge rusher, limiting his exposure until he was ready to consistently impact plays. Now, he’s starting Year 3 with an opportunity to play the majority of snaps at a premium position.

Oftentimes in the NFL, breakout star players are the result of an emerging talent getting a bigger opportunity. The Packers will hope this equation turns Gary into a difference-maker and lessens the impact of losing Za’Darius Smith for the foreseeable future.

Packers will shut down OLB Za’Darius Smith due to lingering back injury

Packers edge rusher Za’Darius Smith will go injured reserve while the team allows him to recover from a lingering back injury.

The Green Bay Packers will be without edge rusher Za’Darius Smith for the foreseeable future.

Coach Matt LaFleur said the team is shutting down Smith so he can recover from a lingering back injury.

“Unfortunately, we’re going to have to shut him down for a while,” LaFleur said Friday.

Smith played only 18 snaps in Week 1 after missing most of training camp. He then missed Thursday’s practice. LaFleur said the decision came down to using Smith in a limited role or shutting him down to let him get back to 100 percent.

Smith will go on injured reserve, LaFleur confirmed. He will miss at least three games and possibly more.

Smith, a two-time Pro Bowler for the Packers, hasn’t missed a game since arriving in Green Bay in 2019.

“We want him more readily available,” LaFleur said.

The goal is to get Smith healthy so he can be a full-time player at some point later this season.

Rashan Gary and Preston Smith will play the majority of the snaps at edge rusher. LaFleur said the Packers are signing an edge rusher off a team’s practice squad this week but wouldn’t disclose the player.

Egregious roughing the passer penalty nullifies Packers interception

Packers OLB Za’Darius Smith was penalized for roughing the passer, negating an interception by Darnell Savage on Sunday against the Saints.

An egregious roughing the passer penalty nullified an interception for the Green Bay Packers and handed the New Orleans Saints another chance to score a game-sealing touchdown on Sunday in Jacksonville.

Late in the third quarter, Packers outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith was penalized for hitting Saints quarterback Jameis Winston on third down. The 15-yard penalty negated an interception by Packers safety Darnell Savage in the end zone with the score 24-3 in favor of the Saints.

Smith didn’t hit Winston late or in the head or neck area. Even Mike Periera of FOX thought it was a poor call made on the field.

The correct implementation of the rule might not have changed the outcome of the contest, but the wrong implementation certainly served to end the game. Winston threw a touchdown pass a few plays later, giving the Saints a 31-3 lead to start the fourth quarter.

You make the call. Was this roughing the passer?

Packers OLB Za’Darius Smith will play in season opener vs. Saints

The Packers will have Za’Darius Smith available against the Saints in the season opener.

The pass rush of the Green Bay Packers will be at full force for the season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Packers edge rusher Za’Darius Smith will play against the Saints despite being listed as questionable with a back injury.

Smith, a two-time Pro Bowler, missed most of Packers training camp with the injury. He was also held out of Friday’s practice after participating in a limited capacity on Wednesday and Thursday.

Coach Matt LaFleur said the team would five Smith the whole week to get ready to play. It appears he put himself in a position to give it a go on Sunday against the Saints.

There’s a good chance the Packers will have Smith on a rep count, meaning more opportunities for Preston Smith and Rashan Gary to open the season.

Over the last two seasons, Smith has produced 26.0 sacks, 60 quarterback hits and five force fumbles. He also hasn’t missed a game, appearing in all 32 games and four playoff games since joining the Packers as a free agent.

Ken Crawley, Tre’Quan Smith ruled out on final Saints vs. Packers injury report

Final New Orleans Saints injury report vs. Packers rules out CB Ken Crawley and WR Tre’Quan Smith, adds LT Terron Armstead:

The New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers issued their final injury reports on Friday, barring any sudden changes in transit to Jacksonville on Saturday. And it’s not great news for the Saints, who preemptively ruled out both cornerback Ken Crawley and wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith — each of whom were then designated to injured reserve.

Additionally, New Orleans added starting left tackle Terron Armstead and his backup James Hurst to the injury report. Armstead (back) is expected to play, but Hurst (knee) is questionable. If Hurst can’t go, look for rookie Landon Young to be the next man up behind Armstead.

But there’s a silver lining: the Saints upgraded No. 1 corner Marshon Lattimore (knee) to full participation after he practiced on a limited basis Thursday, so he’ll be ready to go on Sunday. Expect rookie Paulson Adebo to start across from him while trade acquisition Bradley Roby completes his NFL-mandated suspension this week.

As for the other side; Green Bay ruled out backup safety Vernon Scott, but deemed defensive tackle Tyler Lancaster and star pass rusher Za’Darius Smith each questionable to play with back injuries. Smith will likely be a game time decision. The full report:

Packers OLB Za’Darius Smith (back) will be game-time decision vs. Saints

The Green Bay Packers won’t rule out Za’Darius Smith for Week 1 despite the All-Pro edge rusher missing Friday’s practice.

The Green Bay Packers won’t be ruling out Za’Darius Smith for Week 1 despite the All-Pro edge rusher missing Friday’s practice.

Coach Matt LaFleur said the Packers would give Smith the rest of the week to get his body ready to play against the New Orleans Saints in Jacksonville.

“We thought it was in his best interest to leave him out and then give him the next 48 hours to prove if he can go out there and play,” LaFleur said.

Smith, a two-time Pro Bowler, has missed the majority of training camp with a lingering back injury. He practiced in a limited capacity on Wednesday and Thursday but was held out on Friday.

“I wouldn’t say a setback. He’s feeling some things,” LaFleur said.

The Packers increased his reps at Thursday’s practice. The fact his body didn’t respond well to an increased workload doesn’t bode well for his chances of playing against the Saints. Playing it safe with such an important member of the team – especially considering the 17-game schedule ahead – looks like the best bet, but the Packers will always give veteran players a chance to play if they can do so safely.

Marshon Lattimore, Tre’Quan Smith added to Saints-Packers injury report

The New Orleans Saints injury report updated status for CB Marshon Lattimore and WR Tre’Quan Smith against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, via @KadeKistner:

The New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers face off in just three days! The updated injury report is out and considering there were only four players listed between the two teams on the initial report, quite a bit has changed.

Saints receiver Tre’Quan Smith’s addition came as a surprise after practicing fully yesterday. He has been nursing a hamstring injury during camp. However, cornerback Marshon Lattimore also made an appearance on the injury report and was limited in practice today with a knee issue.

New Orleans cornerback Ken Crawley once again did not practice which puts his status for Sunday in significant doubt. Rookie Paulson Adebo will likely get the start in his place as the recently-acquired Bradley Roby will be ineligible to play Week 1 due to suspension. If both Crawley and Lattimore are unavailable, the Saints may have to start Adebo and Desmond Trufant against Green Bay.

As far as the Packers’ side of the house, there was no change for the players initially listed and two more players in Marcedes Lewis and Preston Smith were added.

The New Orleans Saints will host the Green Bay Packers for a Week 1 matchup at TIAA Bank Field on Sunday. The new-look Saints, with Jameis Winston at the helm, have a lot of questions that need answering when it comes to their roster.

Luckily, New Orleans has had some fortune on the injury front to start the season, which helps answering those questions a little easier. There appears to be few surprises when it comes to the initial injury report. Only cornerback Ken Crawley (hamstring) was listed as a non-participant, everyone else was a full participant.

Green Bay, however, had some question marks on the defensive side of the ball. Star pass rusher Za’Darius Smith (back) was a limited participant, and his condition is worth monitoring in the days ago. Here is the full report for both teams:
