One TE for Titans in every round of the 2023 NFL draft

A look at one tight end the Titans could target in every round they have a pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

It’s no secret that the Tennessee Titans’ offense needs a lot of help at the moment. Most people focus on the obvious holes out wide and along the offensive line, but the tight end position can’t be forgotten completely.

Yes, the Titans already have a budding star in Chig Okonkwo, but the team also has to ensure it has someone who can adequately complement his explosive skill set.

The team signed Trevon Wesco earlier this offseason to help out with the blocking aspect of their offense, but that’s hardly the type of addition that would prevent Tennessee from drafting someone they’re interested in.

This article is going to discuss one realistic tight end for each round of the draft in which the Titans have a pick. Tennessee has a pick in every round except the fourth.

We already covered the wide receiver position on Wednesday, and we will be doing the same concept going forward for each major position of need until they have all been covered.

This tight end group is considered one of the best crops in quite some time, so let’s dive right into it and see which prospects could be potential targets for the Titans throughout draft weekend.

Lions 2023 draft: A tight end prospect for every round

A tight end prospect for each round of the 2023 NFL draft for the Detroit Lions to consider selecting

Up next in the series of “a prospect for every round” is a position group where Lions fans absolutely want nothing to do with a first-round talent, even though the current roster might reflect tight end as a big need. Detroit’s rather inglorious history of drafting first-round TEs and not having those players finish their rookie contracts with the team. That list includes Brandon Pettigrew, Eric Ebron and T.J. Hockenson, who was traded for a second-round pick in the middle of last season.

The Lions bring back their top three TEs from the end of the 2022 season. Brock Wright, James Mitchell and Shane Zylstra performed well in a more limited usage in the passing game. Mitchell, the Lions’ fifth-round pick a year ago, is a player widely viewed as someone who could take a big step forward with a healthy offseason.

Here is one tight end prospect that fits the Lions from each round of the draft. Detroit doesn’t currently have any picks in the fourth or seventh rounds, but players from those ranges are included because trades happen all the time during the draft weekend.

The purpose here isn’t to advocate for any one player but to give a better idea of the type of talent available at each level of the 2023 NFL draft.

One tight end for the Vikings for every round of the 2023 NFL draft

Even with the top two solidified, @MattAnderson_8 identified a tight end in each round of the NFL draft that the Viking could target.

Last season, the Minnesota Vikings made a trade for tight end T.J. Hockenson at the trade deadline. That move solidified the starter at the position for the foreseeable future. They followed it up at the start of free agency by signing Josh Oliver.

With the NFL Draft approaching, teams frequently make unexpected picks. Although it’s unlikely that the Vikings will use their high draft picks on a tight end, it’s still worth examining the draft class. Therefore, I have chosen one tight end from each round of the draft who could potentially be a good fit for the Vikings.

49ers 2023 prospect watch: ODU TE Zack Kuntz is huge and athletic

This TE the #49ers met with virtually is huge and an excellent athlete.

Tight end sits right near the top of the 49ers’ list of needs in the NFL draft. We can now add Old Dominion University TE Zack Kuntz to the list of players they’ve met with at the position. Kuntz and the 49ers talked virtually per Draft Network’s Justin Melo. Where San Francisco is picking in this year’s draft, there aren’t many more interesting tight end prospects than Kuntz.

He is a giant at 6-7, 255 pounds, and he lit up the combine with big-time testing numbers. Kuntz ripped of a 4.55 40-yard dash with a 1.57 10-yard split. He leapt 40 inches in the vertical and 10-8 in the broad jump, while churning out a 6.87 in the three-cone and 4.12 in the 20-yard shuttle. All of those marks are in the 90th percentile or better at the position according to MockDraftable.

Kuntz began his career at Penn State, but caught just three balls for 26 yards in 14 games over his first two seasons. In 2020 he played in seven games without recording a stat.

In 2021 he transferred to ODU where he immediately had success. He caught 73 passes for 692 yards and five touchdowns during his first year there. His second season was derailed by an undisclosed injury and he played in only five games. In those five games he had 12 receptions for 144 and two touchdowns, including a six-catch, 83-yard, one-touchdown performance against Virginia.

While Kuntz brings a ton of athleticism, he’s not a great route runner and a little bit of an awkward mover. That’s something he’ll have to improve in the NFL. However, he can line up all over the field, and he’s good at using his body to wall off smaller defenders. He’s also not moved off of his route very easily when defenders get hands on him, which helps make up for some of the lack of separation he gets as a route runner.

It’s easy to see where Kuntz could quickly carve out a role in a 49ers offense that doesn’t have a secondary pass-catching threat at tight end. If he can polish his game and harness his size and athleticism, Kuntz could be a late-round steal.

2023 NFL draft: Chargers met virtually with Old Dominion TE Zack Kuntz

The Chargers continue to do their homework on this year’s tight end class.

Ahead of the 2023 NFL draft, the Chargers met virtually with former Old Dominion tight end Zack Kuntz, according to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo.

Kuntz, the 6-foot-7 and 255-pounder, played three years at Penn State before transferring, where he earned first-team All-Conference USA honors in 2021 in which he had 73 catches for 692 and five touchdowns.

This past season, Kuntz only had 12 catches, 144 receiving yards and two touchdowns after missing seven games due to an injury.

Despite his lack of college production, Kuntz is drawing plenty of buzz due to his immense athletic profile.

Kuntz had a standout combine highlighted by a 4.55 40-yard dash and a 40-inch vertical jump. He is the tallest player in combine history with a 40-inch vertical.

With offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s system heavily predicated on 12 personnel (two tight ends, two wide receivers and one running back), Los Angeles will likely be looking to add one in this year’s draft.

Kuntz currently projects as an early Day 3 selection.

Falcons held virtual meeting with Old Dominion TE Zack Kuntz

The #Falcons held a virtual meeting with Old Dominion TE Zack Kuntz

The Atlanta Falcons have invested considerable resources into the tight end position over the last two offseasons. After drafting Kyle Pitts fourth overall in 2021, the team traded a seventh-round pick to the Patriots for tight end Jonnu Smith a few weeks ago.

Don’t expect head coach Arthur Smith to stop adding tight ends anytime soon, though. On Tuesday, Justin Melo of the Draft Network reported that Atlanta met virtually with Old Dominion tight end Zack Kuntz.

The 6-foot-8, 255-pound tight end is extremely athletic for his size. While his 2022 campaign was somewhat forgettable — 12 catches, 144 receiving yards and two touchdowns — Kuntz finished with 72 catches for 692 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2021.

The Pro Football Focus big board has Kuntz ranked as the 125th overall prospect in the 2023 NFL draft class. Atlanta also reportedly has meetings scheduled with Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston, ECU running back Keaton Mitchell and Florida QB Anthony Richardson.

Eagles met with intriguing Old Dominion TE Zack Kuntz

Zack Kuntz is rising up draft boards, and you can add the Philadelphia Eagles to the list of teams that have met with the talented Old Dominion tight end

The Eagles have one of the NFL’s top tight ends in Dallas Goedert, but the organization could be looking to upgrade the No. 2 spot.

Zack Kuntz is a former Penn State commit that eventually transferred to Old Dominino and blossomed into one of the top prospects entering the 2023 NFL draft.

Justin Melo reports that Philadelphia held a virtual predraft meeting with the intriguing tight-end prospect.

The 6-foot-8, 250-pound tight end played in just five games this season, catching 12 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns after suffering an injury.

Kuntz was named to several Preseason College Football All-American teams after catching 73 passes for 692 yards and five touchdowns in 2021.

A potential matchup nightmare at the next level, Kuntz runs a 4.5 40-yard dash and a 40in the vertical leap.

Rams met with Old Dominion TE Zack Kuntz, a combine standout

The Rams met virtually with Zack Kuntz, a 6-foot-7 tight end with a 40-inch vertical and 4.55 speed

The Los Angeles Rams should be in the market for a tight end this offseason, even with Tyler Higbee still under contract. This is a loaded draft class at that position and selecting one in the first few rounds wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Zack Kuntz from Old Dominion is a very intriguing prospect after he crushed his combine performance. At 6-foot-7, he ran a 4.55 in the 40-yard dash and jumped 40 inches in the vertical, making him the tallest player in combine history with a 40-inch vertical.

The Rams are showing interest in Kuntz, meeting with him virtually this offseason, according to Justin Melo of The Draft Network.

Kuntz could go as early as the second or third round with his athletic profile, but a lack of college production could limit his draft stock. In five years between Penn State and ODU, Kuntz only had one season with at least 15 catches and 150 yards. That was in 2021 when he had 73 catches for 692 and five touchdowns.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 27, Old Dominion TE Zack Kuntz

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Old Dominion tight end Zack Kuntz.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers are currently thin at tight end. Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis are the only tight ends on the current roster that have caught a pass in the NFL.

It’s a position that’s in dire need of an infusion of talent. Luckily for the Packers, the 2023 NFL Draft boasts a talented tight-end class.

A tight end that the Packers could target in the 2023 NFL Draft is Zack Kuntz. The Old Dominion transfer checks in at No. 27 in the Unpacking Future Packers countdown.

The Penn State transfer recorded 73 receptions for 692 yards and five touchdowns. In five games this past season Kuntz recorded 12 receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a season-ending injury.

Kuntz was a three-sport athlete at Camp Hill High School in Pennsylvania. He won the state title in the 110-meter hurdles. The Old Dominion tight end put on a show at the combine when he clocked the second-fastest 40-time (4.55) among tight ends. He posted the best marks in the vertical (40”), broad jump (10-8), three-cone (6.87), and tied for the most reps on the bench press with 23.

“Covering Conference USA and FIU, Kuntz’s arrival to the league from Penn State in 2021 was much ballyhooed,” Eric Henry, the co-managing editor of Underdog Dynasty said I had the opportunity to see him live when Old Dominion came to Miami that season and just how impressive he is physically when you’re field level is something that’s hard to translate into words. Couple that with a nine-catch, 100-yard day with a touchdown and he very much lived up to the hype.”

With his size (6-7, 255 pounds) and his freakish athleticism, Kuntz has the tools to develop into a mismatch nightmare at the next level.

“For a player who is his size, he’s a smooth athlete and a very good pass catcher,” Henry said. “Sometimes, when you see skill position players who have his size and test well at the combine, they’re incredible individual athletes who can excel at the combine drills — but that doesn’t always translate to the field, with Kuntz it does.”

With his size and speed, Kuntz is a vertical threat that could make a living terrorizing teams over the middle of the field. On top of that, he has all the makings of being a mismatch weapon inside the 20s.

With his frame, he has a huge catch radius, giving the quarterback a huge window to drop the bucket into. For a man his size, he has some twitch getting in and out of his breaks. He has reliable hands (five drops over the past two seasons). Old Dominion lined him up in the slot, inline, and even out wide.

“He’s a natural pass-catcher,” Henry said. “As a route runner, while his athleticism is smooth, it really depends on how he’s going to be used. He operated over 60% of the time in the slot on passing downs. Does he remain in that role or because of his size does he project more as an inline tight end?”

In terms of blocking, Kuntz is best on the move. He may not have the functional strength to hold up at the point of attack at the next level. He was able to seal off defenders to open up outside running lanes in ODU’s offense. This is an area of his game that will continue to develop once an NFL coaching staff gets their hands on him.

“In ODU’s run game, he was used more as an inline tight end,” Henry said. “Because of his size, he was adequate as a blocker. Not someone who you necessarily are going to shift the run game towards the strong side, but not a liability and should progress with NFL-level coaching.”

Fit with Packers

It would be shocking if the Packers didn’t draft two or even three tight ends in the upcoming draft.

It’s reasonable to expect the Packers to select at least one tight end in the first three rounds and add one or two more on day three of the draft.

With his traits, Kuntz could go as early as the third round or early on day three. The Old Dominion tight end may not make an immediate impact, but there is no denying that teams will be getting in line to get their hands on a player with his size and movement skills.

“During his last full season before the injury, he looked like a cut above the rest of the players at that level, and in my five seasons covering C-USA, that’s the defining characteristic I’ve looked at when assessing a player at the Group of Five level,” Henry said. “His size instantly gives teams a red zone advantage and his best football should be ahead of him.”

The Packers were woeful in the red zone last season. Kuntz may not provide a down-to-down impact during his rookie season, however, he could develop into a weapon inside the 20s for the Packers as they look to get their red zone offense back on track.

Potential tight end prospects for Chargers in each round of 2023 NFL draft

Here’s a tight end prospect in each round of the 2023 NFL draft that could be a fit for the Los Angeles Chargers.

With Gerald Everett, Donald Parham Jr., and Tre’ McKitty all returning for the 2023 season, the Chargers return their top three options at tight end. But with Everett set to be a free agent after next season and Parham and McKitty yet to solidify themselves as premier NFL players, tight end remains a potential need for LA.

Here’s a prospect for every round that could fit the Chargers:
