Purdue headed to Fayetteville for charity exhibition on October 28

The charity exhibition for Arkansas basketball this year? The Purdue Boilermakers.

Earlier we told you the season opening opponent for Arkansas for 2023-24.

The charity exhibition opponent holds a little more cachet than Alcorn State, however.

It was announced on Wednesday that the Purdue Boilermakers, who won the Big Ten a year ago and were a No. 1 seed before being upset by Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the tournament, would be making the trip to Bud Walton Arena.

The Boilermakers, who return 7-foot-4 center Zach Edey, will provide an excellent test for Arkansas before regular season play begins, just like Texas did a year ago.

“We are really excited to be hosting one of the premier programs in the country for an exhibition game,” Razorbacks coach Eric Musselman said in a release. “They will come to Bud Walton Arena with a preseason ranking among the top 5. Both programs will be playing in high-level Thanksgiving tournaments, so this game will have an incredible level of competition to help prepare us both early on and through March, much like the Texas game did for us last year.

The game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 28, a bye week for the Razorback football team.

It will not be part of the 2023-24 men’s basketball season ticket package and proceeds from the game will go to the United Way to assist with relief efforts from the tornados that affected Arkansas this past spring. Reserved seating in the upper and lower bowl will go on sale to the general public at a later date.

USC’s Isaiah Collier identified as top-tier contender for 2024 Wooden Award

Another sign of how elite Isaiah Collier is: The freshman is a top contender for the award given to the best player in college hoops.

After a recent USC basketball practice, Trojan coaches couldn’t say enough good things about the No. 1 recruit in the country in the 2023 cycle, Isaiah Collier.

We wrote:

“A few Trojan assistants spoke about the talent Collier brings to the team, beginning with Jay Morris.

“’Very tough, he has the measurables,’ Morris said. ‘I think he’s a player that you put on the court day one and let him do what he does.’

“Chris Capko, another USC assistant, raved about Collier and his old-school style.

“’A lot of people like playing with Isaiah. Isaiah is an old-school point guard in terms of pass-first, get others involved,’ Capko said.

“Assistant coach Eric Mobley weighed in. He has been impressed with one specific part of Collier’s game — his passing. ‘His passing ability is off the chart. His ability to see the floor and paint the picture,’ Mobley said.”

This guy is the real meal deal. Now, there are Wooden Award preseason projections to back it up.

Shotgun Spratling of USC’s 247Sports site has noted that Collier is one of 10 top contenders for the award given to the best player in college basketball.

Here are the 10 candidates, with an attached note about an upcoming showcase for Collier and USC:

Notre Dame commit Cole Certa heading to IMG Academy

Nice opportunity for him.

A month ago, Notre Dame received its first 2024 recruiting class commit in shooting guard [autotag]Cole Certa[/autotag]. He was recruited out of Bloomington Central Catholic in Illinois. But he has decided that that school is no longer sufficient to continue his athletic growth. He has announced that his final year before joining the Irish will be sent at IMG Academy, the famous sports prep school in Bradenton, Florida:

Certa, a three-star recruit weighing in at 6-foot-4 and 165 pounds, is heading to a school that has produced some quality talent. Among them are Purdue star and reigning national player of the year Zach Edey and North Carolina’s Armando Bacot. Several alumni also have gone onto the NBA, including Anfernee Simons, Dwight Powell, Josh Green and Jonathan Isaac. What’s more, Kyle Brey, son of former Irish coach [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag], is the coach of the varsity football team.

While Certa’s decision is a loss for the state of Illinois, it’s necessary for him to take the next step in his game. Here’s hoping it works out for him and eventually, the Irish.

Player of the Year Zach Edey will return to Purdue, withdraw from draft

Edey was the Player of the Year and a consensus All-American last season after averaging 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks.

Purdue center Zach Edey announced Wednesday on social media that he will withdraw from the 2023 NBA draft and return to the Boilermakers for his senior year.

Edey was the Player of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American last season after averaging 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks on 60.7% shooting from the field. He became the first player in history to record 750 points, 400 rebounds, 70 blocks and 50 assists in a season.

The 7-foot-4 Edey became the second player to lead the conference in scoring, rebounding and field-goal percentage. He is one of nine players to accomplish that feat in a major conference and the first since Blake Griffin in 2009.

Edey initially declared for the draft on April 18 while retaining his college eligibility. He met with teams to gain feedback on his draft stock and opted to come back after testing the process over the past month and a half.

He was most commonly projected to be a late second-round pick this year. The decision to stay in school will enable him to work on his game and improve his draft positioning ahead of 2024, which is thought to be a weaker class.

With Edey back, the Boilermakers project to be one of the top teams in the country entering the preseason and a likely favorite in the NCAA Tournament.

The leading scorer in the Big Ten is back for another year

The leading scorer in the Big Ten is back for another year

The reigning National Player of the Year is back in the Big Ten. Zach Edey is returning to the Purdue Boilermakers after withdrawing his name from the NBA draft pool.

Edey averaged a Big Ten-leading 22.3 points per game last season, and grabbed a conference-leading 12.8 rebounds. He was the most dominant force in the country all season long before Purdue’s shocking 63-58 first-round loss to Farleigh Dickinson.

Edey’s return immediately makes Purdue one of the favorites in the Big Ten for the 2023-24 campaign. Edey announced the news himself via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. He had previously been going through the draft process in hopes of being selected this June.

Zach Edey in OKC for likely pre-draft visit with the Thunder

With the draft less than a month away, Zach Edey was spotted in OKC, per @DylanBuckingham

The 2023 NBA draft is less than a month away, which means pre-draft visits and workouts have ramped up.

The Oklahoma City Thunder own the draft picks at No. 12, No. 37 and No. 50, which creates a wide range of prospects they could select at those spots.

One possibility at No. 50 is Purdue center Zach Edey — who was spotted in OKC this week, per KFOR’s Dylan Buckingham. He is likely in town for a pre-draft visit with the Thunder.

The 21-year-old has spent three college seasons at Purdue. In 34 games last season, he averaged 22.3 points on 60.7% shooting, 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks.

If Edey stays in this draft class — he has until the end of May 31 to return to Purdue for his senior season — he will likely be an option for the Thunder at the No. 50 spot. There’s also a good chance the 7-foot-4 big man will be available as an undrafted free agent.

The 2023 NBA draft is scheduled for Thursday, June 22. A full list of prospects who’ve met with the Thunder can be read here.

Brooklyn Nets projected to select Purdue center Zach Edey with 51st overall pick

According to Cody Taylor of The Rookie Wire, Purdue center Zach Edey will be a Brooklyn Net.

The Brooklyn Nets are projected to take Purdue center Zach Edey with the 51st pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, according to Cody Taylor of The Rookie Wire. This was revealed in Taylor’s latest version of his mock draft for the real draft that will happen on June 22nd.

Edey, 7’4″, 285 LBs, averaged 22.3 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game in 34 games during his junior season with the Boilermakers. He was sixth in the country in scoring and second in the nation in rebounding. Those numbers earned him the Associated Press Player of the Year for the 2022-23 season as well as the Big Ten Player of the Year.

From looking at his film, Edey towers over the competition once he steps on the court. While he’s not very athletic and doesn’t seem to be that fleet of foot, it looks like he has the ability to protect the rim with the best of them. It appears that his challenge will be how he finds his way into the NBA with how spaced the floor is nowadays. But, that would explain why he’s going late in the second round to a Brooklyn team that needs all the size it can get.
