Yan Xiaonan wants Zhang Weili UFC strawweight title rematch ‘any time, any place’

After picking up a win at UFC Macau, Yan Xiaonan is eager to run it back with Zhang Weili for the strawweight title.

[autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag] wants another crack at [autotag]Zhang Weili[/autotag] and her UFC strawweight title.

Yan (19-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) returned to action for the first time since coming up short in her first bid at Weili’s title in April at UFC 300. It was a successful shutout decision performance against Tabatha Ricci (11-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 248 in Macau.

Thrilled with the victory and the opportunity to fight close to home, Yan nearly missed the opportunity make a call out. As Michael Bisping began wrapping up the interview, Yan grabbed the mic and delivered an emphatic call out of the champion, who was sitting cageside.

“Weili, I want a rematch!” Yan said through an interpreter during her in-octagon post-fight interview. “I want to get the belt back. Are you ready?”

[lawrence-related id=2788607,2788630,2788651]

Weili was shown on camera responding to the call out and waved Yan on. Weili, who has two title defenses under her belt, has not fought since defeating Yan at UFC 300 and does not have her next fight set.

If it were up to Yan, she would get the next shot in a rematch, and her only preference would be for the fight to take place in her home country, which would be an amazing atmosphere for the China vs. China title showdown.

“Any time, any place,” Yan said through an interpreter during a post-fight interview with UFC.com. “But hopefully, it will be a pay-per-view event in China.”

UFC Fight Night 248 results: Yan Xiaonan outpoints Tabatha Ricci, calls for Zhang Weili rematch

Could Zhang Weili vs. Yan Xiaonan 2 be coming to a UFC cage sometime soon?

The UFC Fight Night 248 co-main event turned out to be a technical, decisive affair.

Recent UFC title challenger [autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag] defeated [autotag]Tabatha Ricci[/autotag] by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) at Galaxy Arena in Macau, China, on Saturday, as she once again solidified herself as one of the division’s top fighters.

Throughout the 15 minute affair, Xiaonan (19-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC) seemed a step ahead of Ricci (11-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC). The fight took place on the feet at distance. Xiaonan utilized head movement and footwork to puzzle Ricci, who never could really get much of anything going.

With the victory, Xiaonan bounces back after a failed (but gritty) title challenge vs. Zhang Weili at UFC 300. She moves to 3-1 in her most recent four. After the fight, she called for a rematch vs. Weili, who was in attendance for Saturday’s fights.

As for Ricci, her momentum is halted. A two-fight winning streak consisting of victories over Tecia Pennington and Angela Hill is snapped.

Yan Xiaonan vs. Tabatha Ricci prediction, pick, start time for UFC Fight Night 248

Potential title implications are on the line when Yan Xiaonan and Tabatha Ricci clash in the UFC Macau co-feature. Who has the edge?

[autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag] and [autotag]Tabatha Ricci[/autotag] meet Saturday in the UFC Fight Night 248 co-main event at Galaxy Arena in Macau. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 4-1
UFC main cards, 2024: 99-90-3

Yan Xiaonan vs. Tabatha Ricci UFC Fight Night 248 preview

Yan (18-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) returns to action for the first time since getting a shot at the women’s strawweight title at UFC 300. Yan came up short against the champ Zhang Weili on the scorecards, ending her momentum of back-to-back victories over Mackenzie Dern and former champ Jessica Andrade. … Ricci (11-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) enters one of her toughest tests to date on the heels of back-to-back wins. “Baby Shark” has had a perfect 2024 thus far by defeating Tecia Pennington and Angela Hill by decision.

Yan Xiaonan vs. Tabatha Ricci UFC Fight Night 248 expert pick, prediction

The co-main event in Macau features a showdown between ranked strawweights, Yan and Ricci.

Despite Ricci arguably losing her last three fights in a row (receiving a particularly kind decision opposite Tecia Pennington), “Baby Shark” finds herself in the top 10 of the division with a chance to take out a recent and relevant title contender.

Yan, who has not been seen since her failed attempt to unseat Zhang Weili at UFC 300 earlier this year, will be looking to hold the proverbial door on her No. 2 spot in the weight class.

Although Ricci’s on-paper grappling advantages and penchant for stealing judges’ attention spans make her a live dog in this fight, I can’t help but side with Yan from a stylistic perspective.

The reigning champ had some solid success on the ground early against Yan, but the Chinese fighter has made marked improvements to her grappling and submission defense since moving shop stateside to train with Team Alpha Male.

If Yan can keep the majority of this fight on the feet, then I suspect that her superior volume and striking acumen will pay solid dividends against Ricci’s more predictable approaches.

The pick is Yan by split decision (since at least one judge will likely fall under Ricci’s spell).

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 248 odds between Yan Xiaonan and Tabatha Ricci, with MMA picks and predictions.

In a 3-round women’s strawweight bout on the main card, Yan Xiaonan and Tabatha Ricci battle at UFC Fight Night 248 Saturday at Galaxy Arena in Cotai, Macau. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s UFC odds around the UFC Fight Night 248: Yan vs. Ricci odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims begin at 3 a.m. ET, with the main card beginning at 6 a.m. ET. All events can be viewed or streamed on ESPN+.

Records: Yan (18-4-0) | Ricci (11-2-0)

Yan had a shot at the women’s strawweight title last time out against Zhang Weili, but she suffered a setback via unanimous decision. The 35-year-old Chinese fighter is now just 2-3 across the past 5 fights. Her last victory came via first-round KO/TKO against Jessica Andrade at UFC 288 in May 2023.

For Ricci, she won against Angela Hill via unanimous decision last time out on Aug. 24, 2024. She has won 2 in a row, and 6 of the past 7, while she has ended up going the distance in 4 straight outings. Her last finish was a second-round submission against Jessica Penne at UFC 285.

Yan holds a 2-inch reach advantage over Ricci, with a slight edge in significant strikes landed per minute and significant strike accuracy percentage, too. Ricci is much better with a 2.99 takedown average, although Yan is significantly more accurate on takedowns at 73.33%.

UFC Fight Night 248: Yan vs. Ricci picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Yan (-184) is fighting in Macau, which is much closer to her native China, so the crowd will presumably be behind her.

Ricci can match Yan in the significant strikes department, but the favorite is much more accurate, and that will likely mean the difference when the judges go to the scorecards.

We’re expecting this fight to go the distance because 3 of Yan’s past 5 fights, and 9 of her 11 fights at the UFC level, have ended up going all the way.

For Ricci, she also gets the judges involved frequently, with 4 straight decisions, while going the distance in 6 of the past 7 outings.

Play YAN BY POINTS (-105) at near even-money for the best play on the board.

Over/Under (O/U)

You can’t play Over 2.5 Rounds (-410) or Yes: Will the fight go the distance? (-350), whether it’s straight up or as part of a multi-leg parlay. The risk outweighs the reward way too much.

PASS, and simply focus on the Method of Victory and winner instead.

UFC Macau adds Yan Xiaonan vs. Tabatha Ricci, Volkan Oezdemir vs. Carlos Ulberg, return of Wang Cong

The upcoming UFC Fight Night 248 event in Macau on Nov. 23 is filling out with the addition of multiple matchups.

UFC has announced multiple fights for its upcoming event in Macau.

UFC Fight Night 248 takes place Nov. 23 at Galaxy Arena in Macau, featuring a big bantamweight matchup between former 135-pound champion [autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag] and former flyweight champ [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag].

Wednesday, the promotion officially announced multiple new fights on social media for the return event to China.

A UFC-ranked top 10 matchup in the women’s strawweight division has been added. Former title challenger [autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag] will face [autotag]Tabatha Ricci[/autotag].

Xiaonan (17-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) returns to action for the first time since her title challenge loss against Zhang Weili at UFC 300. Ricci (11-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) enters on a two-fight winning streak, fresh off a unanimous decision win over Angela Hill at UFC on ESPN 62.

Another UFC-ranked top 10 bout is also on the card, this one in the light heavyweight division, between former title challenger [autotag]Volkan Oezdemir[/autotag] and [autotag]Carlos Ulberg[/autotag].

Oezdemir (20-7 MMA, 8-6 UFC) is on a two-fight winning streak, both by way of early stoppage. His last performance was a devastating knockout of Johnny Walker at UFC on ABC 6. Ulberg (10-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) was a part of the UFC 303 fight shuffle, but was unable to compete. He will now enter his second fight of the year after a 12-second knockout of Alonzo Menifield.

In addition, Wang Cong will compete in her second UFC bout, taking on Gabriella Fernandes.

Cong (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) made waves in her promotional debut by flattening Victoria Leonardo in the first round. “The Joker” holds a kickboxing win over current UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

With the additions, the current UFC Fight Night 248 lineup includes:

Yan Xiaonan recounts dangerous UFC 300 rear-naked choke sequence: ‘I was close but not completely out’

The UFC 300 co-main event’s Round 1 conclusion sparked much discussion when it appeared Zhang Weili may have put Yan Xiaonan unconscious.

[autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag] was visibly dazed and woozy as she rose to her feet at the end of Round 1 during the UFC 300 co-main event but says at no point was she totally unconscious.

Caught in a [autotag]Zhang Weili[/autotag] rear-naked choke attempt, Xiaonan (17-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) was saved by the bell then struggled to get to her corner. Referee Jason Herzog took a close look but didn’t deem the title challenger unable to continue.

“I was close, but not completely out,” Xiaonan told MMA Junkie on Wednesday through a translator. “I saw the clock on the cage side and knew there were only a few seconds left. I signaled to the referee that I was OK, but with only one hand to defend, the choke was tightening. When the bell rang, I knew I had to stand up to show I could continue. I was wobbly but managed to make it to my corner.”

The unusual sequence and the officiating that accompanied it frenzied some viewers. When Xiaonan’s cornerman pressed his finger under her nose, UFC 300 commentators Daniel Cormier and Joe Rogan mentioned on the broadcast the possibility of smelling salt being used – though they later clarified they ultimately did not think it transpired, after all.

“He put his finger under my nose and pressed,” Xiaonan said. “Honestly, I was so focused on my cornermen talking that I didn’t notice much else. And I also asked my corner which round is next? Second? Because I kind of couldn’t remember it at that moment.”

For now, Xiaonan hits the reset button. What the oddsmakers listed as a likely lopsided affair turned out to be a competitive contest that earned her props from many around the MMA community, including UFC CEO Dana White.

Weili (25-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) went on to win by unanimous decision. The next move hasn’t been figured out, but Xiaonan maintains her enthusiasm coming out of her first UFC title challenge.

“I’ll keep training and fighting the top contenders the UFC gives me, with the goal of fighting for the title again,” Xiaonan said. “And, if the UFC considers a women’s BMF belt, count me in!”

Zhang Weili sizes up Yan Xiaonan before UFC 300, impressed with growth as mixed martial artist

UFC champ Zhang Weili sees some major improvements in Yan Xiaonan’s overall game.

LAS VEGAS – UFC strawweight champion [autotag]Zhang Weili[/autotag] sees major improvements in [autotag]Yan Xiaonan[/autotag]’s game.

Weili (24-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) defends her title against Xiaonan (17-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC 300 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) co-main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the promotion’s first all-Chinese title fight, Weili is honored to represent her country on the big stage.

“This is another fight for me, but on the other hand, this also means so much for the MMA sport’s development and growth in China,” Weili told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at Wednesday’s media day.

Xiaonan is coming off back-to-back wins over Mackenzie Dern, followed by a knockout of Jessica Andrade. Weili has been especially impressed with Xiaonan’s physicality.

“I see that Xiaonan has grown a lot,” Weili said. “especially in her strength, as well as her grappling, on the ground, everything.”

Weili recently made a camp switch over to Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas to work with coach John Wood, which has led to dominant title wins over Carla Esparza and Amanda Lemos.

“We actually started working together since my fight with Carla, so we’ve been working together for a while,” Weili said. “I think he’s super smart, and we align on our vision, our style, how to train together. So, it’s been a very good work experience.”
