Microsoft says Game Pass is about ‘choice’ rather than cannibalizing sales

The service “offers gamers and game creators more” with regard to how they make purchases.

Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed that games added to Xbox Game Pass have fewer base sales overall – though the company insists it’s about giving players and developers “another option” to discover and monetize games, respectively.

As reported by Eurogamer, Microsoft expanded on its data showing that Xbox Game Pass additions tend to sell less – but there are other means of generating revenue.

“Xbox Game Pass offers gamers and game creators more choice and opportunity in how they discover, experience, and deliver games,” reads the statement. “For gamers, that means providing another option for them to discover games and play with friends at a great value. For developers, that means creating another option for how they monetize their games.”

“We’re focused on helping game creators of all sizes maximize the total financial value they receive through Game Pass,” it continues, “Each game is unique, so we work closely with creators to build a custom program to reflect what they need, ensure they are compensated financially for their participation in the service, and allow room for creativity and innovation. As a result, the number of developers interested in working with Game Pass continues to grow.”

Every month, Xbox Game Pass sees new titles – February 2023’s update bought Madden NFL 23, Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord, and more.

Xbox free play days are back with two excellent RPGs

Xbox is bringing back free play days for Gold and Game Pass Ultimate members, with two popular RPGs, a moto-racing game, and discounts

Xbox is bringing back free play days for Gold and Game Pass Ultimate members, with two popular RPGs and a moto-racing game up for grabs this time. From now until Feb. 12, 2023, Gold and Ultimate members can download Scarlet Nexus, The Ascent, and TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge 2 for free.

If you like what you see, you can get two of the games at a discount. During the event, Scarlet Nexus is $14.99 (75 percent off), and Isle of Man is $10.49 (65 percent off). On console, you can find the free play days collection under the subscriptions tab in the Xbox Store.

Scarlet Nexus is a cyberpunk RPG from the minds behind Bandai Namco’s Tales of series, following a group of psionic soldiers blessed – or cursed – with supernatural powers and taasked with saving their cities from interdimensional invaders called Others. It’s a straightforward task – until suddenly, their leader stages a coup against the government.

The Ascent is another cyberpunk action-RPG, but this one has a darker twist. The mega-corporation that controlled the city has collapsed, leaving a lawless vacuum in its wake. Your task is surviving and forging a better, brighter future for yourself, using some sweet cybernetic upgrades along the way.

Finally is Ride on the Edge 2, a motorcycle racing game that sets you loose on gorgeous tracks as you learn the ropes and eventually work your way up to challenging the 60-kilometer-long Snaefell Mountain Course. Ride on the Edge 3 releases in May 2023, so if you’re keen on what the series has to offer, now is the time to try.

Madden and Gundam lead the Xbox Game Pass games for February 2023

Microsoft announced the Xbox Game Pass games for February 2023, and while the lineup is a bit slim, there are some heavy hitters in the mix

Microsoft announced the Xbox Game Pass games for February 2023, and while the lineup is a bit slim, there are some heavy hitters in the mix. Leading the pack, and just in time for Super Bowl LVII, is Madden NFL 23 for console and PC. Mech-loving folks can get their hands on Gundam, and you can plan the city of your dreams – or everyone else’s nightmares – in Cities Skylines.

As always, the new month’s releases are staggered across a week.

These three go live on Feb. 9, 2023.

  • Madden NFL 23 (console and PC via EA Play)
  • SD Gundam Battle Alliance  (console and PC)
  • Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord (cloud, console, and PC)

On Feb. 15, 2023, you can grab Cities Skylines – Remastered via the cloud and Xbox Series S. Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition lands on Feb. 16, 2023, for cloud, console, and PC, and on Feb. 21, 2023, you can play Atomic Heart for cloud, console, and PC.

A handful of games are leaving Game Pass on Feb. 15, 2023.

  • Besiege
  • CrossfireX
  • Infernax
  • Recompile
  • Skul: The Hero Slayer
  • The Last Kids on Earth

Xbox and Tango Gameworks surprise-released Hi-Fi Rush in January after the Developer_Direct conference, but it looks like February will be a lighter month for releases on the Series X|S, at least from Microsoft studios.

Not quite as many games in terms of volume that we get in these updates, but all three that are there are phenomenal – so it works out! Microsoft has been hyping up the Persona games for months now.

Regrettably, Xbox Game Pass is also losing several excellent games soon. We’ll list everything leaving on Jan 15, 2023, but remember that there’s a membership discount of up to 20 percent should you wish to keep these forever.

  • Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (console, cloud, and PC)

Xbox Game Pass is losing five popular games soon

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and four others are going bye-bye.

Five well-known games are leaving Xbox Game Pass on Jan. 15, 2023 – so subscribers will lose access to these titles in less than two weeks.

On Tuesday, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox Game Pass is losing titles like Windjammers 2 and Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc this month. We’ll all five below.

  • Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc Anniversary Edition
  • Windjammers 2
  • Pupperazzi
  • Nobody Saves the World
  • The Anacrusis

Anyone with an active Xbox Game Pass subscription can keep these games, but you’ll have to buy them. The good news is members get a 20 percent discount on the asking price for each.

Xbox Game Pass loses games every month, so this is hardly an odd occurrence. Most people are taking note because, for example, the Danganronpa series is wildly popular. Granted, these games might be back on Xbox Game Pass eventually – but for now, they gone!

For the majority of 2022, Xbox Game Pass was fantastic. Slowly but surely, Microsoft’s subscription service has been scooping up solid releases left and right, including High On Life, Pentiment, and Vampire Survivors, among many others.

We still don’t know what the Xbox Game Pass lineup for January 2023 is yet, but Microsoft will announce those details soon enough.

Obsidian says Pentiment only exists because of Game Pass

Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer says medieval detective game Pentiment can only exist in the landscape Game Pass helped create

It’s thanks to Xbox Game Pass that Pentiment, Obsidian’s new medieval detective RPG, ever stood a chance of being approved, Obsidian design director Josh Sawyer said. Sawyer made the comments on a recent episode of Waypoint Radio (first spotted on Resetera), where he also said Xbox’s subscription service helped change the game development landscape, making it possible for projects with lower anticipated returns on investment to have a chance at life.

“I never would have proposed making Pentiment without Game Pass,” Sawyer said. “I just don’t think it would have been possible. The old mentality of Publishers and Developers is generally focussed on larger investments with higher ROI (return on investment), and that’s not the point in this environment, in this ecosystem.”

Sawyer continued by saying Pentiment was only ever intended for a small, niche audience, and as long as that audience enjoyed it, then he believes it accomplished its goal.

Pentiment’s launch data seems to be proving Sawyer’s point as well, at least on Steam. While Pentiment received generally positive reviews from critics, the RPG’s highest player count peaked at just over 900.

However, in keeping with the philosophy that brought it to life, Pentiment also launched on Xbox Game Pass, where it may find a slightly bigger audience to appreciate the work that went into it.

The next round of Xbox Game Pass games is coming up, and it includes a bundle of indie greats, plus Warhammer and more

The next round of upcoming Xbox Game Pass games is on the way, with Norco, Warhammer 40K, Dune, and more in the spotlight. Xbox announced the next batch of games in a new Xbox Wire blog post and provided some expected release dates for the nearly dozen new games headed to the platform’s subscription service.
