Former Colorado WR Xavier Weaver signs with Arizona Cardinals as undrafted free agent

Three Buffs signed undrafted free-agent contracts on Saturday

Former Colorado Buffaloes football wide receiver Xavier Weaver signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent Saturday afternoon.

Weaver inked the deal shortly after the 2024 NFL draft wrapped up, sitting through the entirety of the event without hearing his name called. Nonetheless, Weaver found himself on an NFL roster at the end of the day.

The contract Weaver signed included $255,000 in guaranteed money, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Weaver spent four years at USF before transferring to Colorado and becoming one of quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ favorite targets. As a graduate student in his lone year with the Buffs, he posted 68 receptions for 908 yards, leading the team in both categories. Four of his receptions resulted in touchdowns and two more came on rushes.

Arizona added Weaver to an incoming class that includes two other wideouts. With the fourth overall pick, the Cardinals took Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr., the consensus best receiver in the draft. They later took Tehjaun Palmer out of the University of Alabama Birmingham in the sixth round.

Weaver joins defensive lineman Leonard Payne Jr. and edge rusher Derrick McLendon II as the only Buffs players from head coach Deion Sanders’ first year in Boulder to land NFL deals. Payne (Miami Dolphins) and McLendon (Carolina Panthers) signed undrafted free-agent deals.

Browns in attendance for WR Xavier Weaver’s Pro Day last week

Cleveland continues to do their homework on this years WR class

The 2024 NFL draft is about two and a half weeks away, and teams are looking to finalize their boards before it starts. Cleveland continues to do its homework on this loaded wide receiver class as they attended the pro day of Colorado wide receiver Xavier Weaver.

Weaver is an older prospect who started his career at UCF for four seasons before transferring to Colorado this past year. 2023 was his best season as one of Colorado’s top options, totaling 68 catches for 908 yards and four touchdowns.

If the Browns select Weaver, it won’t be until day three of the draft. At six feet tall and only 170 pounds, Weaver is an undersized player. However, there are some intriguing aspects of his game; Weaver is a polished route runner with great change of direction ability.

Weaver accelerates to his top speed quickly and has decent long speed but lacks the elite speed to challenge defenses vertically. If Cleveland is looking to address the position late in the draft with a guy who has some decent upside, Weaver would be an alright option.

Xavier Weaver doesn’t participate in NFL scouting combine drills

Xavier Weaver didn’t participate in Saturday’s NFL scouting combine drills

Former Colorado Buffaloes football wide receiver Xavier Weaver did not participate in on-field drills at the NFL scouting combine on Saturday for unknown reasons. Weaver was Colorado’s only invitee to this year’s combine.

The Buffs’ leading receiver in 2023, Weaver did go through body measurements and took interviews during his time in Indianapolis. Weaver’s height was officially measured at 6 feet, but he was lighter than the 180 pounds he was listed at before the season, weighing in at 169 pounds.

It looked as though Weaver was in good spirits during the combine, as he could be seen cheering on his fellow wide receivers during their drills.

During his media availability, Weaver was asked how it felt to be repping CU at the NFL combine (h/t Scotty Gange of 9News):

“I keep saying it’s a blessing, but that’s really all I can say,” Weaver told Gange. “A kid from Orlando, Florida, I’m not even supposed to be here coming out of the private school I came from.”

Taking a closer look at Colorado WR Xavier Weaver’s NFL draft stock

We examined Xavier Weaver’s NFL draft stock heading into the scouting combine

The Colorado Buffaloes had a talented group of wide receivers in their first season under head coach Deion Sanders. Still, the team must find a new leading receiver, as Xavier Weaver has declared for the 2024 NFL draft.

Weaver spent one year in Boulder after transferring from the University of South Florida. He made the most out of his opportunities at CU, establishing himself as a go-to receiver for quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

After announcing his NFL draft intentions in January, Weaver was recently invited to the NFL scouting combine, which begins Monday in Indianapolis.

Take a closer look at what Weaver would bring to an NFL team:

Colorado WR Xavier Weaver invited to NFL Scouting Combine

Xavier Weaver has been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine

Fresh off his lone season with the Colorado Buffaloes, wide receiver Xavier Weaver has been invited to the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. Assuming he accepts the invite, Weaver will head to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the combine, which is set for Feb. 26-March 4.

The former South Florida standout is currently the only CU player who has received an invite.

This past fall, Weaver quickly became one of quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ favorite targets. In 11 games played, he led the Buffs with 68 catches and 908 receiving yards while finding the end zone four times.

Top performers from Colorado’s gut-wrenching loss to Stanford

These five #cubuffs had big games in an otherwise disappointing night at Folsom

Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes football team came up on the wrong side of history on Friday night with a 46-43 double-overtime loss to the Stanford Cardinal at Folsom Field.

After leading 29-0 at halftime, the Buffs blew the lead in the second half and dropped to 4-3 on the season, including 1-3 in Pac-12 play.

Despite the historic collapse, Colorado had several players step up and play well, at least in the first half.

With Coach Prime and the Buffs doing some deep soul-searching, let’s look at some of Colorado’s top performers from Friday night’s disappointing loss to the Stanford Cardinal:

Xavier Weaver explodes for three first-half touchdowns vs. Stanford

Xavier Weaver put up a first half for the ages

After being held quiet in the desert against the Arizona State Sun Devils, Colorado wide receiver Xavier Weaver brought his A-game in the first half of Friday night’s game against the Stanford Cardinal. Weaver jumped out the gate with three catches for 53 yards, two receiving touchdowns and a third TD on a 14-yard run.

The senior has been one of quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ favorite targets on the season, and he found a lot of open field early in the Stanford secondary. Weaver opened the game’s scoring with a nine-yard touchdown reception less than five minutes into the first quarter:

Sanders again found Weaver on a beautiful deep ball in the second quarter after he created more than five yards of separation from the defender covering him.

And if it didn’t look easy enough for Weaver on his second touchdown, offensive coordinator Sean Lewis reached into his bag of tricks to get No.10 his third touchdown. Weaver essentially walked it in from the 15-yard line:

8 potential Lions draft prospects to watch in CFB Week 4

Here are eight prospects to watch on Saturday, September 23rd with an eye for how they might appeal to the Detroit Lions in the 2024 NFL draft.

College football is moving into conference play around the country. The Detroit Lions will have their collegiate scouts out and about at several games to investigate some potential draft prospects of interest.

There are several games that feature multiple prospects of interest, including two matchups in the Great Lakes region that the Lions staff is confirmed to be credentialed for attending. The prospects here are largely drawn from those matchups.

Two Buffs make 247Sports’ early-season ranking of the Pac-12’s top WRs

A pair of #cubuffs were featured in a top 10 ranking of the Pac-12’s wide receivers

Entering the 2023 college football season, the Pac-12 Conference was often talked about as having the most loaded group of quarterbacks in the entire country. Through the first chunk of the year, that argument remains true, but the conference’s wide receivers have also been dazzling for the likely soon-to-be-extinct Pac-12.

There are so many talented wide receivers in the Pac-12, and the Colorado Buffaloes, Washington Huskies and USC Trojans boast arguably the most impressive groups.

Blake Brockermeyer of 247Sports recently ranked the top 10 wide receivers in the Pac-12 Conference and a pair of CU Buffs made his list. Here’s where everyone stood:

Xavier Weaver drawing dark horse Heisman consideration

Xavier Weaver is emerging as a dark horse Heisman candidate

The Colorado Buffaloes haven’t had a player warrant legitimate Heisman Trophy consideration for quite some time. Through three games this season, starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Travis Hunter are right in the middle of the conversation.

However, CU Buffs wide receiver Xavier Weaver was mentioned by Fox Sports College Football earlier this week in its list of “under the radar” Heisman candidates. Fox also had Washington State QB Cameron Ward, Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel and Notre Dame running back Audric Estime on the list.

Weaver has emerged as a massive target for Sanders. Through three games, he has 386 receiving yards with a pair of touchdowns on 25 receptions. Weaver put up 100 or more receiving yards in each of the first two games, including a team-high 170 against Nebraska before leading the Buffs again with 98 in the double-overtime win over Colorado State.

In nine games with South Florida in 2022, Weaver caught 53 passes for 718 yards and six scores. After fellow former USF WR Jimmy Horn Jr. transferred to Colorado in December, Weaver followed in February and the duo has been quite fun to watch for the Buffs.

If Weaver continues to put up big numbers — he should see even more work now with Hunter out a few weeks — the Heiman buzz should only increase.
