Cowboys work out All-Pro cornerback, former 2nd-round pick, plus make practice squad additions

Roster churning is a year-round mission, and the Dallas Cowboys are no strangers to the need in 2024. On Wednesday, they opened the door for a possible union with an All-Pro.

Cornerback Xavien Howard, formerly of the Miami Dolphins, worked out for the Cowboys at The Star in Frisco. Clearly, Dallas has an interest in the four-time Pro Bowl player who has yet to play in 2024, but the 31-year old veteran left without coming to an agreement.

Clearly having a need for depth at the position, Dallas made three additional roster moves to lesser fanfare. First, they activated CB Amani Oruwariye’s 21-day practice window. The young veteran was placed on the Reserved/Injured list after he suffered a back injury against San Francisco.

The Cowboys also signed cornerbacks Dee Delaney and Troy Pride, Jr. to fill the vacancies on their practice squad.

Pride was a 2020 fourth-round pick with Carolina with eight career starts. Delaney is a five-year veteran appearing in 52 games mainly with in Tampa Bay. Delaney is a 2018 UDFA who has played for Jacksonville, the Jets, the Dolphins, Washington and the Buffalo Bills before this.

Miami drafted Howard in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft where he picked off eight passes in his first two seasons. In year three, he recorded 10 interceptions en route to All-Pro honors.

That led to the Dolphins signing him to a five-year $75.25 million deal in 2019 with $39 million in total guarantees. Four years later, Miami would double down and give him a five-year $90 million extension after leading the league in interceptions twice.

Howard played eight seasons in Miami before being released prior to the start of the new league year as a June 1 cut.

NFL insider offers details on Xavien Howard’s workout with Bengals

More details on the Bengals’ pursuit of free agent Xavien Howard.

The Cincinnati Bengals broke from normal procedure and attempted to sign free-agent cornerback Xavien Howard before Week 11.

Howard, though, left without a deal after a workout with the team.

Little more was said about the situation — until now.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler, Howard looked good during the workout, hence the team offering him a deal:

The Bengals bringing in veteran cornerback Xavien Howard for a workout this week indicates they know they need help on defense. The fact that they didn’t sign him, even after a workout that sources in the building told me was impressive, indicates Bengals fans shouldn’t get their hopes up about help being on the way.

It seems likely that the Bengals offered Howard somewhere in the range of the veteran minimum, which makes sense considering he’s 31 years old and it is already Week 11.

But it also speaks to just how desperate for help the Bengals are at corner right now. Dax Hill is out for the season and both Cam Taylor-Britt and DJ Turner have struggled.

The Bengals also worked out a big-name running back before signing a lesser-known name, so perhaps another move will happen at corner soon. Either way, the guys on the roster will need to step up big against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 11.

Bengals, Xavien Howard failed to agree on deal

No deal for the Bengals and a big name.

The Cincinnati Bengals had veteran cornerback Xavien Howard in for a workout on Monday, but the two sides couldn’t agree on a deal.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Bengals made an offer to Howard after the workout but he’s since declined and gone back home while awaiting other calls.

The Bengals will need to look elsewhere for help at cornerback with Dax Hill lost for the season and Cam Taylor-Britt in the middle of a regression that has previously had him benched at least once.

Cincinnati also made an addition at running back in free agency on Monday, although not with the expected name.

Bengals hosting CB Xavien Howard for a visit

The Bengals break the mold and go for a big name.

The Cincinnati Bengals are hosting veteran cornerback Xavien Howard for a visit today, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Howard played eight years with the Miami Dolphins and made the Pro Bowl four times but he hasn’t been able to find a home during the 2024 season to this point after being cut by the Dolphins in the spring.

The Bengals’ defense has been towards the bottom of the league this season and has been part of a 4-6 record they hold through 10 games, which is 3.5 games back in the AFC North. With two big games coming up against the Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati might be feeling the pressure of a possible playoff spot slipping away for the second straight season.

There is a connection between the Bengals and Howard. Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo was Howard’s defensive backs coach with the Dolphins from 2012-17 when the corner was at his best.

Howard has played 100 games in his career with 95 passes defended and 29 interceptions and at 30 years old, the Bengals might be hoping that he could provide a spark to their unit.

4 free-agent CBs the Rams should consider signing with Darious Williams out

Darious Williams is out at least four games and the Rams’ CB group is getting thin already

Things are quickly unraveling for the Los Angeles Rams at cornerback. Derion Kendrick is out for the year with a torn ACL and now Darious Williams has landed on injured reserve with a hamstring strain that he suffered on the second day of training camp.

Tre’Davious White is healthy but Cobie Durant, who will replace Williams, has a hamstring injury of his own that limited him in practice Wednesday. It’s possible that if Durant can’t play, either Charles Woods or Josh Wallace – two undrafted rookies – will be elevated into a starting role.

It’s especially concerning for this week against the Lions, but the Rams also need to think about the following three weeks when Williams will also be out. Here are four free-agent corners the Rams could consider signing to help round out the depth chart while Williams is sidelined.

Xavien Howard: It’s slightly surprising that Howard is still a free agent after being cut by the Dolphins in the spring. He’s a ball hawk who has 29 career interceptions, typically playing his best in zone coverage – a staple of the Rams defense. He’s now 31 years old and hasn’t practiced at all this year, so it is risky to sign him but he’s probably the most talented corner available.

Ahkello Witherspoon: Witherspoon was the Rams’ best cornerback last season, playing every regular-season game and recording three interceptions. Yes, he got torched in his last game as a Ram against the Lions, but he’s familiar with Los Angeles’ scheme and should be able to pick things up pretty quickly if signed.

Duke Shelley: The veteran played 11 games with the Rams last season, primarily as a special teams contributor. He did play 76 snaps on defense and has the ability to play in the slot or on the outside. Shelley has decent ball skills and broke up two passes in limited playing time last year.

Steven Nelson: Nelson, a 31-year-old veteran, played all 17 games for the Texans last season and has suited up in at least 15 games in each of the last six years. Like Williams, he’s primarily a boundary cornerback so he could help fill in on the outside opposite White.

Giants are betting favorites to sign this four-time All-Pro safety

The New York Giants are betting favorites to sign both a four-time All-Pro safety and a four-time Pro Bowl cornerback.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Denver Broncos waived four-time Second Team All-Pro safety Justin Simmons in an effort to save $14.5 million against the salary cap back in March. Surprisingly, the 30-year-old remains available.

With obvious and glaring needs in their secondary, the New York Giants could become a potential destination. In fact, BetOnline has them as the odds-on favorites to land the prized free agent.

As of this writing, the Giants are +400 to sign Simmons, just ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles (+600) and Buffalo Bills (+800). The San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns are also listed at +900 each.

Simmons, who is also a two-time Pro Bowler, has appeared in 118 career games (108 starts) and recorded 604 tackles (443 solo, 19 for a loss), five QB hits, 4.5 sacks, 64 passes defensed, 30 interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

In 2022, Simmons led the NFL with six interceptions.

The veteran would be an ideal option for the Giants if general manager Joe Schoen valued the safety position but after allowing Julian Love and Xavier McKinney to walk in back-to-back years, it’s clear that he doesn’t.

In addition to Simmons, BetOnline also has the Giants at +700 to sign veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore (third-best odds) and +400 to sign four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard (best odds).

One way or another, BetOnline expects the Giants to add a body to their secondary ahead of training camp.

Xavien Howard allegedly sent boy sexual images of his mother

Among the allegations, Xavien Howard is accused of sending sexually explicit content to a woman’s son after she refused to get an abortion

Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard allegedly shared revenge porn, including sending a boy sexually explicit images of his mother, according to court filings.

Howard, 30, was sued by a woman in 2023 who claimed that she dated the NFL player in 2022. After the relationship ended, the woman — identified in court filings as Jane Doe — said she received a direct message on Instagram from a woman who claimed she was sent “several sexually explicit videos” of Howard having sex with various women, including Jane Doe.

According to the woman on Instagram, Howard sent the videos “to make her mad because she didn’t want to have sex with him.”

In a new document filed Thursday that was obtained by the Miami Herald, attorneys allege that Howard also sent sexually explicit content to a woman’s son after she refused to get an abortion. The attorneys have petitioned for the then-minor to be allowed to sue Howard and be added to the lawsuit.

“This behavior is abhorrent, especially sending that to a child,” attorney Adriana Alcalde told the Miami Herald.

Howard is currently a free agent after he was released by the team in March. The cornerback spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career with the Dolphins and the team has previously expressed interest in a potential reunion, although Howard said “that door is closed.”

Xavien Howard on Jaylen Wright taking jersey number: ‘Go crazy in 25’

Xavien Howard offered some words of encouragement to the Dolphins rookie who took over his No. 25 jersey.

For eight seasons, Xavien Howard was the owner of the Miami Dolphins’ No. 25 jersey, earning four Pro Bowls and a First Team All-Pro nod during his tenure.

But when the cornerback was released by the Dolphins in March, his former jersey number was vacant for not even two months before it was scooped up by third-round rookie Jaylen Wright.

“He’s a big-name guy,” Wright said of Howard earlier this month at the Dolphins’ rookie minicamp. “I’m just excited to wear the number that he repped for a long time and make a lot of big plays in it.”

Last week, Wright suited up in full uniform for the first time at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere and Howard took notice.

Howard, 30, is still a free agent and will officially come off the Dolphins’ books next week as a post-June 1 designation. It wouldn’t be shocking if Miami was back in the market for the veteran before the end of the offseason.

“We didn’t close the door on it,” Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said in February at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. “We’re going to stay in communication as the process goes and see what happens, and we left the door open for him possibly coming back here too.”

What would happen with the No. 25 jersey in the event of a reunion remains to be seen.

Texans listed as best fit for free agent CB Xavien Howard

The Houston Texans could be an interesting destination for Texas native and former All-Pro Xavien Howard and is considered a prime location per ESPN.

The Houston Texans still have uncertainty in the secondary.

Free agent cornerbacks Jeff Okudah, Myles Bryant and C.J. Henderson were brought in this offseason to compete for the starting position across from second-year standout Derek Stingley Jr. Additionally, the Texans used the  42nd overall selection on Georgia cornerback Kamari Lassiter.

Could Houston add another boundary defender before the start of training camp? At least one writer believes the team could use additional help at the position in the form of a pending free agent.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen listed Houston as the best fit for former Miami Dolphins’ cornerback and current unrestricted free agent Xavien Howard.

Howard is entering his ninth NFL season and is still looking for a home after spending eight seasons with the Dolphins. Perhaps no longer one of the league’s best, he still earned All-Pro honors in 2018 and 2020 as well as four Pro Bowl selections.

Last year was a down season for Howard in coverage and Miami elected to move on from his expensive contract. In 13 games, he defended just 12 passes and had one interception.

Howard, a Houston native, still has ties to the state following high school. He became a household name while starting for the Baylor Bears from 2012-15.

His public desire to compete for a Super Bowl title and his ties to the Houston area make for a logical fit for a team that has questions at corner.

Howard would likely compete with Okudah for the second boundary corner position. If acquired, it would likely signal that Lassiter would compete for snaps at the nickel cornerback position as a rookie.

It’s possible that would be a preferable development since Lassiter has a greater ability to contribute against the run than any other cornerback currently on Houston’s roster.

Houston is set to begin Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on Tuesday and has a chance to see its 2024 defensive back group work together for the first time.

If they were to make a move for a veteran like Howard, expect the Texans to bring in a new addition following the first few practices.

Two Vikings make CBS Sports’ ‘best fits’ from 2024 NFL Draft

CBS Sports NFL draft analyst Chris Trapasso has released his top 10 fits from the 2024 NFL Draft and the Vikings have two picks on the list.

It’s been several weeks since the 2024 NFL draft, but that hasn’t stopped a slew of draft analysts from sharing their thoughts on how teams performed in the event. For the most part, the Minnesota Vikings have received positive acclaim for their picks, and that’s the case again with the latest from CBS Sports.

In analyst Chris Trapasso’s “best fits” column, not one but two Vikings made his top 10 list. In fact, both players — Khyree Jackson and J.J. McCarthy — made his top five overall. Jackson came in at number five for Trapasso, with him stating that Jackson gives him Xavien Howard vibes:

Jackson gave me Xavien Howard vibes on film. Long, athletic, ultra-physical, at times tremendously suffocating at the line and at the catch point, and other times lost in coverage.

But you know who got the most out of Howard in the NFL? Vikings current defensive coordinator Brian Flores. In 2020, under Flores’ tutelage, Howard led the NFL with 10 interceptions. Now, Flores wasn’t necessarily integral in the development of Howard, who was a 2016 draft pick. But he certainly understood how to maximize his special yet imperfect skill set.

And now Flores gets another intimidating boundary cornerback with otherworldly length and an up-and-down style the Vikings are likely hoping can be smoothed out to more consistent play. The former Alabama defender had three picks and seven pass breakups at Oregon in 2023. It’ll be fascinating to monitor how Flores works with another Howard-like specimen in the his secondary.

The new Vikings quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, came in as the second-best fit from the 2024 NFL draft, according to Trapasso, with only third-round linebacker Peyton Wilson and the Steelers as a better fit, according to the analyst. Here’s what Trapasso had to say about McCarthy’s fit with Minnesota:

McCarthy is a rare cat at the quarterback spot in that he’s young — only 21 years old — with plenty of experience — 38 starts — at Michigan.

While he won’t be one of the top-5 athletes at his position in the NFL, he proved to be plenty capable of either creating with his legs when the original play is coverage or, simply, throwing with timing, accuracy and velocity while on the run.

And that functional mobility is key in an offense from the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree. Kevin O’Connell will likely feel far more comfortable with the play-action bootleg at the core of his scheme. McCarthy typically understands where to go with the football and can glide through his reads, two other elements key to most aerial attacks but especially critical in O’Connell’s very meticulously timed offense.

The setup for McCarthy is magnificent, too. Doesn’t necessarily have to be forced onto the field in Week 1 given the presence of Sam Darnold. But Darnold isn’t so good that he’ll keep McCarthy holding the clipboard for long. And… Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, a rock-solid offensive line.

McCarthy landed in the best environment of any first-round quarterback.

While some fans and analysts alike may be concerned about what the Vikings had to give up to get their high-profile picks, it seems the overall consensus from the NFL draft community is that the Vikings came away with at least a few great pieces for the future.
