2025 NFL draft: Who is the perfect prospect for the Rams in Round 1?

Pro Football Focus picked West Virginia OT Wyatt Milum as the perfect first-round prospect for the Rams

From now until April, the Los Angeles Rams will attempt to figure out which players might be on the board for them at No. 26 overall in the first round of the draft. Being so late in the round, it’s difficult to know who will be available, but the Rams should still be able to find a quality prospect at a position of need.

Pro Football Focus picked the perfect prospect for every team in the draft and West Virginia offensive tackle Wyatt Milum was the selection for the Rams. His experience in both zone and gap blocking schemes makes him a good fit for Sean McVay’s offense, potentially at left tackle if Alaric Jackson leaves in free agency.

The Rams’ preferred run concepts have changed over the years. Outside zone was the Rams’ preferred run concept during the Sean McVay years until 2022 when they started to use more man/gap runs.

In 2024, Wyatt Milum’s run-blocking grade on Man runs was 83.2, and his run-blocking grade on outside zone runs was 82.7, so Milum will be able to help the Rams offense, whether the Rams return to their outside zone-heavy ways next season or continue to lean into their increase usage of Man runs. Wyatt Milum has also proven to be an elite pass protector, and he hasn’t allowed a sack in three straight seasons at West Virginia.

Milum got better each year at West Virginia, allowing 14 pressures in 2022, nine in 2023 and only six last season. Incredibly, he only allowed one QB hit in three seasons and zero sacks, proving to be a brick wall on the left side of the line.

At 6-foot-6 and 317 pounds, he has the frame to be an NFL left tackle, but some teams could try him at guard, too. For the Rams, their biggest need is at tackle so that’s where they’d probably give him a shot to compete for snaps.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 89, West Virginia OL Wyatt Milum

Up next in the Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is West Virginia offensive lineman Wyatt Milum.

The Green Bay Packers spent a first-round pick on an offensive lineman for the first time since 2011 last year when they selected Jordan Morgan with the 25th overall pick.

Morgan took snaps at right guard and left guard during his rookie season and could be in store for a more prominent role if starting center Josh Myers isn’t re-signed and Elgton Jenkins slides over to center, opening the door for Morgan to start at left guard.

With Zach Tom and Rasheed Walker entering the final year of their rookie contracts, the Packers could look to add a versatile offensive lineman early in the 2025 NFL Draft as they look to get out ahead of a potential problem if they’re unable to re-sign the pair of starting offensive tackles.

Wyatt Milum could be a potential target for Brian Gutekunst as he looks to bolster the offensive line this offseason. The West Virginia offensive lineman checks in at No. 89 in the Unpacking Future Packers Countdown.

Milum, a four-star recruit and West Virginia native finished his career as a Mountaineer with 35 starts at left tackle and eight at right tackle.

“It’s not often you have two linemen like Zach Frazier and Wyatt Milum from in-state but that’s what the Mountaineers were able to experience. Milum was a highly recruited offensive tackle that elected to stay home over offers from practically all of college football’s major programs and lived up to the billing and more,” Keenan Cummings, the managing editor for WVSports.com said. “After earning freshman all-American honors after giving up just three sacks in his first year, he never gave up another over the rest of his career. Milum was as dependable as you could ask for at tackle for the Mountaineers and was one of the best in the nation as a senior earning consensus All-American honors. West Virginia simply doesn’t replace players like that and Milum surpassed all of the high expectations set for him when he first enrolled.”

Milum gave up three sacks during his first season as a starter. Over the next 35 starts at left tackle, Milum gave up zero sacks and 30 pressures. He’s a technician, who uses a timely punch and stays balanced in his pass sets. The former four-star recruit has the lateral quickness to mirror speed rushers and protect the corner.

“Milum is more than capable as a run blocker but as mentioned above where he excels is in pass protection,” Cummings said. “He has a number of different sets and is strong for his position while showing plus athleticism. The Mountaineers never had to worry about him in terms of pass protection and he graded out incredibly high throughout his career.”

Cummings has excellent play strength and has strong hands to control defenders in the run game. The 43-game starter at left tackle, who may kick inside due to his length, plays with a bit of a mean streak as a run blocker. He has a powerful lower half and creates movement to blast open running lanes. He shows no restrictions out in space.

“Milum is a skilled run blocker that has good strength and hands,” Cummings said. “West Virginia was comfortable running behind him to solid results throughout the course of his career. He has the skill set to improve here as well.”

Fit with the Packers

The Packers have had a ton of success turning college offensive tackles into all-pro caliber offensive guards.

What Green Bay’s starting offensive line looks like when the 2026 season kicks off is hard to project.

It’s safe to assume that the Packers will prioritize getting Tom re-signed. Will they look to re-sign Walker? Will Sean Rhyan get a second contract with the Packers? Is Morgan starting at tackle or guard? Is Myers still around? There are a lot of potential moving parts.

Adding a player like Milum who could play tackle or guard could help paint a clearer picture and help the Packers prepare for a mass exodus if they are unable get deals done to keep their homegrown talent on the farm.

“Milum had a ton of expectations coming into West Virginia and was able to show that those not only were founded, but perhaps even sold him short with how productive he was during the course of his career,” Cummings said. “He will need to improve in some areas at the NFL level but the former Spring Valley product is an experienced lineman with great measurables and the production to back it up. Milum has the flexibility to play either side at tackle and is the type of player that always was a leader by example in the weight room and practice. Much in the mold of Zach Frazier, Milum simply goes about his business and gets the job done.”

Milum played right tackle in high school and then started eight games there during his freshman campaign in 2021. He then started 35 games at left tackle for the Mountaineers and never gave up a sack.

Milum offers tackle-guard versatility, he’s a technician in pass protection and a road grader as a run blocker. Due to the current makeup of Green Bay’s offensive line he may not see many snaps as a rookie, but could step into a starting role during his second year in the league.

The NFL draft is always about looking ahead and the Packers are always planning ahead in an attempt to build a sustainable winner. Milum may not be the pick in the first round, but he could be a target in the second round for Gutekunst.

Lions attack interior offensive line in Draft Wire’s latest mock draft

Lions attack interior offensive line in Draft Wire’s latest mock draft with West Virginia’s Wyatt Milum

The Lions have one of the better offensive lines in the NFL, a key reason quarterback Jared Goff has been able to do the things he’s done this season and why the Lions are 12-1. But it’s never a bad idea to always try and keep improving the unit and building for the future.

That’s the direction Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire went in for the Lions in his latest mock draft. At pick No. 32 — the spot Lions fans hope the pick actually ends up — the Lions go with Wyatt Milum, guard, West Virginia.

Milum (6-6, 317) has played left and right tackle for the Mountaineers but is being best viewed as an interior option at the next level. The good news is that he can move between center and guard, giving teams flexibility, particularly a team like the Lions that will be looking at guard options with Kevin Zeitler set to be a free agent after the season.

Milum is a strong run blocker, something the Lions will certainly love with their duo of Sonic and Knuckles, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. He has room to grow in pass protection, but the Mountaineers have been a run-heavy team. If he chooses to play in the bowl game, West Virginia is facing Memphis in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl on December 17.

Chiefs scouting report: West Virginia Mountaineers OT Wyatt Milum

West Virginia Mountaineers offensive lineman Wyatt Milum would be an ideal target for the Kansas City #Chiefs in the 2025 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs rostered four rookie offensive linemen for this season to solve depth concerns in their front five. The unit achieved mixed results in the Chiefs’ first four games when the rookies and second-year left tackle Wanya Morris saw the field.

Kansas City must continue investing in its offensive line to sustain its budding dynasty.

West Virginia Mountaineers offensive tackle Wyatt Milum would be an ideal target for Chiefs general manager Brett Veach in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft.

He started at right tackle as a freshman and is in the midst of his third season playing left tackle. Milum lacks the traditional arm length measurements to play offensive tackle in the NFL, and his skills project well inside at guard.

Milum didn’t allow a single pressure during West Virginia’s first four games and posted standout performances against Kansas and Pittsburgh in recent weeks. He uses his play strength, controlled footwork, and patient hands to frame blocks well and build a strong technical foundation. Milum rarely suffers fundamental breakdowns in pass protection.

Milum drops his sturdy anchor once defenders engage with him and uses his combative upper body to knock pass rushers off balance. Milum looks for opportunities to torque defenders out of their stances and pancake them. That finishing mentality pops on his film in pass protection and the run game.

Milum’s open-field speed and movement skills help him pull and pick off second-level defenders for wide zone or gap runs. He uses his leg drive and motor to dig out defensive ends on inside zone runs and widen the B-gap.

West Virginia goes on the road to challenge 3-2 Oklahoma State at 3:00 p.m. CST this Saturday. The Cowboys lost each of their last two games while the Mountaineers are returning from their off week.

Notre Dame Suffers Rare Recruiting Loss to West Virginia

That streak ended Friday evening as West Virginia got a big win over Notre Dame. At least in terms of recruiting.

Perhaps the West Virginia Mountaineers football program was just due to get a victory over Notre Dame. Since the teams first met in the 1989 Fiesta Bowl, the Fighting Irish have won all four contests the teams have played on the field.

That streak ended Friday evening as West Virginia got a big win over Notre Dame. At least in terms of recruiting.

Wyatt Milum, an offensive tackle rated as a top 25 player in the entire 2021 recruiting class by 247Sports announced Friday that’d he be taking his talents to West Virginia next year.

Notre Dame has a strong start in recruiting for 2021 but this one no-doubt stings. It’s one thing to lose out on prospects to Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson or LSU. It’s another when West Virginia wins the services of players you so badly want.

It may seem odd but it’s hard to knock a young man for staying home. I can relate as I always thought I wanted to go a huge school far from home…and then I wound up at a tiny one an hour away.

Either way the push for a second offensive tackle in this class now becomes a bigger concern. Landon Tengwell of Maryland and Nolan Rucci of Pennsylvania are just two of several possibilities there.

If there is a silver lining in this it’s that at least it happened now and not down the road when Notre Dame’s staff was thinking a commitment was certainly coming and time was instead wasted.

Either way, Jeff Quinn (OL Coach) will need to do his best Mariano Rivera impression soon and close another one of these tackles commitments out to join Avon, Indiana’s four star Blake Fisher.
