SummerSlam results: Close but no cash-in as Seth Rollins retains against Finn Balor

The Judgment Day tried to use numbers to swing it, but Seth Rollins held on to defeat Finn Balor at WWE SummerSlam 2023.

It’s kind of too bad that WWE used The Demon for Finn Balor in a losing effort at WrestleMania, though his entrance is still fun. No one quite makes an entrance like Seth Rollins, however, and the singalong is in full effect in Detroit.

Balor doesn’t even wait for the bell, attacking from behind during Rollins’ official intro and forcing the ref to pull them apart. You can feel the hatred as they trade right hands, but a Rollins elbow gives him a leg up.

Balor takes a beating from corner to corner but fires back and stomps the champ on the chest. He uses right hands to set up another chest stomp and poses for the hostile crowd.

Rollins is treated to some mat work, with Balor working over his left arm and shoulder. The fans rally him to his feet, but he ends up back with his face on the canvas again. He batters the champ to the corner, continuing to focus on the left arm before kneeling on Seth’s neck.

Finally, Rollins fires out of the corner with a lariat and a series of headbutts as he tries to pick up the pace. A big right hand scores, and he covers Balor for two.

The champ wants a Pedigree, but ends up switching gears and earning another near fall before he sees Balor roll to the outside. Seth connects on a suicide dive, then another, then a third to drape Balor over the announce table.

Seth goes up top but is sent back to the apron and run into the post. Balor looks like he may be bleeding from the mouth, which isn’t unusual for him. He wants a powerbomb on the floor, though the champ is able to escape … only to be caught and powerbombed into the barricade instead.

A Sling Blade back in the ring has the Prince looking confident until he eats a superkick. But it’s Balor who strikes next to earn a two count before trying for an armbar on Rollins’ left arm. Seth manages to roll his foe’s shoulders into a pinning predicament for two, then treats him to a buckle bomb.

Up top goes Rollins for a huge Frog Splash that is only good for two. Both men are moving slower now; though Rollins strikes first, Balor gets the upper hand with a double stomp and his shotgun dropkick. Back and forth they go, with the crowd clapping in appreciation.

Strikes fly both ways on the feet with neither man giving an inch. Another shotgun dropkick lets Finn break the cycle, though he misses a Coup de Grace and runs into a Pedigree, barely kicking out before three.

Damian Priest picks that moment to come down the ramp, causing a stir through the Ford Field crowd. Balor rolls up Rollins for two, then nearly gets pinned himself. Priest hits Rollins from the floor and he’s nailed by a Pedigree, but both Judgment Day members look beside themselves as Rollins kicks out.

Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio are now at ringside too. Priest is knocked off the apron, Rollins hits a Stomp, but somehow Balor kicks out too.

Rollins flies to the floor and takes out Priest and Dom, and the Coup de Grace connects … and Seth kicks out yet again as the crowd goes nuts and starts singing Seth’s song. Priest again looks like he is pondering cashing in.

While he’s on the apron, he throws his briefcase into the ring. But Rollins stomps Balor’s head on the case while the ref is occupied with Priest and gets the three count.

SummerSlam results: Gunther outlasts Drew McIntyre in physical Intercontinental Championship match

In a match that didn’t disappoint in the physicality department, Gunther retained his Intercontinental Championship at WWE SummerSlam 2023.

Drew McIntyre makes his typically crowd-pleasing ring walk prior to Ludwig Kaiser giving an especially enthusiastic version of his introduction of Gunther.

The two men stare each other down as the bell rings, taking their time and circling. They exchange some words we can’t hear before finally locking up.

McIntyre strikes first, knocking Gunther down and nodding as if to say I got your attention. Gunther uses a headlock takeover to force the action to the mat, but only for a moment as McIntyre lifts him into a belly-to-back suplex.

They brawl from the floor back to the ring, but McIntyre sends the champ back outside. Drew is sent into the post, then gets his back bounced off the steel steps.

Gunther’s chops knock McIntyre on his back, but after a suplex he’s surprised when Drew kicks out immediately. He also shrugs off some strikes, which gets the crowd back into the match.

A big overhead throw is answered right away, and McIntyre looks like he’s psyching himself back into the driver’s seat. He manages to out-chop the champ and drive him back into the corner for his own overhead throws.

McIntyre reaches back for a neckbreaker that leaves both men down again. He wants a Claymore but misses as Gunther sees him coming, slamming him back into the turnbuckles with a shotgun dropkick. McIntyre is unfazed, hitting a Future Shock for a near fall.

Drew counts it down but sees Gunther slither outside, so he launches into a tope con hilo instead. Claymore now? Nope as Gunther hits a dropkick and a powerbomb for a near fall.

Gunther decides to go high risk, splashing his challenger from the top rope but only getting two again. The champ smacks McIntyre in the back of the head repeatedly, almost daring him to get back up. But he changes his tune when the Scottish Warrior starts chopping away again, even as he tries to fight back.

The crowd is wooo-ing now, and McIntyre finally hits a Claymore that only gets a two count. Both men look like they need to do something special to seal up a victory.

McIntyre puts Gunther on the top turnbuckle and chops away at him, taking some fire in return. Drew is crotched on the top rope when he tries to follow his foe up there, and some powerbombs are able to end it for Gunther.

SummerSlam results: Shayna Baszler chokes out Ronda Rousey

The crowd didn’t always feel it, but they enjoyed seeing Shayna Baszler triumph in the end over Ronda Rousey at WWE SummerSlam 2023.

The superb video packages from the week prior to SummerSlam are shown again before Ronda Rousey makes her ring walk. Some cheers are mixed in, but it’s mostly boos greeting her. Conversely, it’s mostly cheers for Shayna Baszler as she heads toward the ring.

There’s no cage for this MMA Rules match, but both women have on MMA gloves. They certainly are fighting like it’s MMA with strikes and takedowns to start.

Rousey is able to take Baszler’s back and attempt an armbar, but Shayna makes it out and to her feet fairly quickly. Baszler lands a leg kick that backs Rousey off.

Shayna scores with a big head kick that sends Ronda to the floor. She walks into a double leg takedown when she returns, and the two women battle on the mat while the fans seem to be growing restless.

That changes somewhat when Rousey knocks Baszler down, though the ref gives Shayna time to recover. Ronda puts her right back down and stuffs a takedown attempt, pounding her former friend on the back.

Baszler is able to hoist Rousey up and both women tumble over the top rope to the floor. They both return to the ring as Baszler is slumped in one corner, and doctors come in to check on her as the crowd boos.

Rousey attacks the docs and yells at Baszler. They battle it out in the middle of the ring, where Shayna’s suplex sets up a rear naked choke attempt. Rousey transitions into an armbar, but Shayna counters into an ankle lock.

Now Rousey pivots to a rear naked choke as “this is boring” chant breaks out. Baszler has her hooks in, with Rousey working her arm to escape. But Ronda finally goes out, bringing this strange hybrid match to an end.

SummerSlam results: Megastar moment — LA Knight wins Slim Jim Battle Royal

The SummerSlam Battle Royal had a very popular winner.

Not going blow for blow here, but will note the highlights and who gets the biggest introductions. The Miz is one in that category, but things really explode for LA Knight, as expected. He has to be the favorite to win here, but we’ve been fooled before when it comes to the Megastar. AJ Styles also gets his full intro and a hearty crowd reaction.

Just as the bell rings, MVP interrupts and says the match can’t begin until the man who will win is in it. He means Omos. The giant is on his way down but everyone already in the ring starts brawling.

Omos immediately starts chucking people out, perhaps trying to speed things up as we’re already more than an hour in. The Brawling Brutes are able to team up on him, but that doesn’t last long as he powers his way out.

Imperium eliminates Otis, which the fans are not happy to see. Tommaso Ciampa and Shinsuke Nakamura renew pleasantries, but Bronson Reed is able to overpower them both.

Austin Theory gets a healthy boo, which turns to cheers when he’s dumped out by Santos Escobar, who is in turn thrown out.

There’s still an Omos problem to solve, as he throws out two men at once, including Matt Riddle. Knight makes a run at Omos but is dropped by a big boot. A Styles Phenomenal Forearm staggers the big man for good, though, and a number of wrestlers join forces to finally throw him out.

Knight is thrown over the top rope but skins the cat and eliminates The Miz. Grayson Waller is out next and the numbers are dwindling as Karrion Kross crashes out.

Reed throws out Chad Gable, then has Knight in trouble. But the Megastar prevails while battling from the apron and throws out Big Bronson.

Only Styles, Knight and Sheamus remain. But Kross grabs Styles’ foot on the apron, allowing a Brogue Kick to send him out. Knight drops his elbow on Sheamus but is caught by a knee.

Sheamus is tossed to the apron, then both men end up on the top rope before they crash down. Knight recovers first and eliminates Sheamus to get a very popular win.

SummerSlam results: No Nightmare as Cody Rhodes finally slays Brock Lesnar

Cody Rhodes fought through numerous trips to Suplex City to win his rubber match with Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam 2023.

Both Brock Lesnar, who enters first, and Cody Rhodes get big reactions from the crowd at Ford Field. Rhodes lingers on the steps before climbing in the ring as the Beast Incarnate paces.

It takes approximately no time for Rhodes to pay his first visit to Suplex City, but he rallies right away for some offense before Lesnar is able to push him back into the corner for some shoulders to the gut. But Cody is one step ahead of him, sending him into the post and hitting a dive to the outside as the fans begin chanting his name.

Lesnar brings things back to the ring and kicks at Rhodes’ legs. He smirks as Cody is rolling around on the mat, then suplexes him overhead … and again. Brock covers but his foe quickly kicks out.

There’s another suplex for those of you counting at home, and Lesnar revels in more boos. One more suplex for good measure, and Rhodes tries to grab some recovery time on the outside.

Lesnar greets Rhodes with a knee and launches into another suplex. Rhodes is thrown out to the floor in what’s becoming a pattern. It looks like Brock wants to win this by countout as he keeps sending Cody back out.

An F5 on the floor sure isn’t going to help matters for Rhodes. Yet the American Nightmare returns to the ring at the count of nine.

Rhodes unleashes right hands only to be suplexed again, then slammed through the announce table. Can he recover from that? Probably yes but we shall see. Oh yes, he does.

Lesnar seems like he can’t believe it, but the fans sure can. Rhodes is defiant, trying to battle his way up from his knees only to receive … yep, a suplex. Maybe the stairs can help Cody, or shoving Brock into the post repeatedly, then using the stairs.

A Cody Cutter is on point and now it’s Lesnar who is slow. There’s a springboard Cody Cutter too, but only for a two count.

Lesnar switches gear and goes for a kimura, and Rhodes is in agony. The fans pop as he manages to grab the bottom rope to force a break.

Turnabout is fair play as Rhodes tries his luck at a kimura. Lesnar teases tapping out before powering out of the hold.

Brock wants an F5, but it’s reversed into a Cross Rhodes. Cody holds on for another, which is enough for the three count.

After the match, Rhodes offered a handshake, and after a head to head standoff, Lesnar raised Cody’s hand and even hugged him.

SummerSlam results: Maverick soars, cheats as Logan Paul defeats Ricochet

Logan Paul was able to defeat Ricochet at SummerSlam 2023 … but not without a big shortcut.

Logan Paul has now firmly embraced his heel role, even acting tough toward fans on his way down the very long SummerSlam entranceway. He supposedly is trying to get to his brother’s boxing match after this, so we’ll see how long this goes. Fans are firmly behind Ricochet from the start.

There’s plenty of posturing and posing early on, along with some smack talking. The crowd is reacting audibly to almost every move, and it will be interesting to see if they can keep that up for three hours.

Paul yanks Ricochet down hard and bounces him off the apron to the floor. The camera cuts to ring announcer Samantha Irvin, who is engaged to Ricochet and got dragged into this feud over the last week by Paul.

The fans enthusiastically tell Paul he sucks as he earns his first near fall. He’s leaning into the boos again, cupping his ear and flexing between moves.

A spinebuster finally turns things around for Ricochet, who follows with a standing moonsault for two. Paul responds with a back body drop that gets big air.

Paul tries to launch into a Spanish Fly off the apron, but both men land on their feet and the Maverick is planted. He recovers in time to drag his foe back out to the floor, however, and hits a Buckshot lariat of sorts before grabbing a drink of Prime. Of course. He returns to the ring for another near fall.

Ricochet battles out of the corner, then heads up top with Paul and drops him with a cutter that leaves both men down. Paul gets hit with a handspring back elbow, and Ricochet’s flurry ends with a springboard lariat and a follow-up for two.

We may now have entered “what will it take to win this?” territory for Ricochet. Paul plants him with a tornado DDT after a nice countering sequence, and the crowd reacts as it’s a very close two count.

Ricochet counters a powerbomb attempt with a facebuster and looks to soar again. But Paul gets his knees up on the Shooting Star Press and covers for yet another near fall.

An inverted electric chair drop has Paul looking confident again. He springboards into a Frog Splash but Ricochet manages to kick out at the last second, and Logan looks a little dismayed.

Paul signals that he’s going to load up his right hand but is caught coming in. Yet another close call occurs after Ricochet’s springboard moonsault finds the mark.

Ricochet tries a 450 splash only to find Paul roll away, and the crowd boos as he grabs some brass knux. His right hand is on target, giving him a cheating victory.

What will the real WWE SummerSlam 2023 main event be?

The most logical candidate is the one expected to be the “real” main event for WWE SummerSlam 2023.

WWE says SummerSlam 2023 has multiple main events, which is good marketing, even if it’s opened up the floodgates for some justified teasing. But to quote the “Highlander” movies from back in the day, there can be only one.

Only one real main event that is, the match that actually closes the show. And according to Fightful Select (subscription required), that will be the Tribal Combat showdown between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso for both the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship and position of Tribal Chief.

Fightful notes the match order is tentative and subject to change, but Roman vs. Jey would be the most logical of the four championship matches, as well as any of the eight matches on the card, to close things out. It has the most emotional resonance of all thanks to the tremendous work WWE has done with the Bloodline saga, and has the highest stakes.

That’ll be even more true if Uso wins. Unlike at WrestleMania, when many expected Reigns to lose to Cody, the consensus public opinion is that Reigns should retain both his championship belt and his role as Tribal Chief. If WWE decides to pull a surprise in Detroit, however, it’s hard to argue for any other bout deserving the actual main event slot.

We’ll see if all goes according to plan, but as Reigns might say, if he’s on the show, he’s closing the show, and that should be the case tonight.

WWE SummerSlam 2023 results: Tribal Combat, Rhodes-Lesnar 3 and more

Ford Field in Detroit is playing host to four championship matches and Tribal Combat among eight bouts on the WWE SummerSlam 2023 card.

The time has arrived for The Biggest Party of the Summer to take over Detroit’s Ford Field. But for some of the biggest stars of WWE, it’ll be more fighting than partying tonight.

That’s because the SummerSlam card is packed to the gills with title matches and other intriguing bouts, with four championships on the line, a 25-man battle royal and some very personal non-title bouts.

With all due respect to WWE framing the event as having multiple man events, the match that’s expected to close the show is one that has built up for well over a year: Tribal Combat between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso, with not only the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on the line, but also Reigns’ status as Tribal Chief. Can Jey grab something that even Roman has claimed would someday be his destiny, or will Reigns’ … well, reign, continue unabated?

Rhea Ripley is somehow without a championship match tonight, but supremacy of the rest of the women’s division will on the line when Asuka defends against both Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair. Finn Balor will try to erase seven years of bitterness when he tries to dethrone World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. And Cody Rhodes will attempt to put Brock Lesnar behind him once and for all in the rubber match between two men who are currently tied at one win apiece.

It should be an interesting and entertaining night, so let’s see how it all plays out.

WWE SummerSlam 2023: Predictions for every match set for Detroit

Who will prevail at WWE SummerSlam in Detroit? Here are picks for every match.

Wrestling fans have truly been spoiled this summer with some amazing wrestling.

Throughout this summer, we have seen banger after banger (from all over the world, mind you), and we potentially have another on the way with the season’s most notable event, SummerSlam.

At SummerSlam, we’ve got one of the biggest matches of the year on top of the card and an undercard that is worthy of sitting all the way through until the main event rolls around.

Naturally, I have predictions. Here is what a rundown of what I think will go down in Motown.

Undisputed WWE Universal Championship (Tribal Combat): Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jey Uso

The story leading up to SummerSlam has been great, but the outcome has never been in doubt.

In short, Reigns will retain his title along with his status as Tribal Chief, extending his already historic reign. With that said, I fully expect WWE to pull out all of the stops with this one. That means there will be plenty of interference and an overabundance of familial drama.

Buckle up folks, this could get wild.

Winner: Roman Reigns

Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar

As of this writing, there has been no added stipulation to their third encounter. Whether one is added or not means nothing to me, as I believe Rhodes will finish this particular story with a win.

Winner: Cody Rhodes

WWE World Heavyweight Championship match: Seth Rollins (c) vs. Finn Balor

With Damian Priest looming in the background with the Money in the Bank briefcase, this could get pretty interesting.

For all we know, Priest could take a page out of Rollins’ playbook and cash in during the match, making it a triple threat.

Cash in attempt or not, I think Rollins will retain his world title, mainly because I think the only person that should take that title away from the current champion is Gunther.

Since Gunther is still on the road to becoming the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time, he is probably not going to pursue the world title until he has broken the long-standing record.

And yes, that could mean Priest fails at cashing in his Money in the Bank contract.

Winner: Seth Rollins

WWE Women’s Championship match: Asuka (c) vs. Bianca Belair vs. Charlotte Flair

While I think Priest may fail in his attempt to cash in his Money in the Bank contract, I think IYO SKY will successfully cash in hers.

However, that comes after Charlotte Flair wins her 15th world title in WWE, which would put her one shy of tying her father for 16 world title reigns.

WWE seemingly looks for ways to get Charlotte Flair extra title runs, so I can easily see the company have her defeat Asuka and Belair, only to quickly lose it to IYO SKY.

It’s happened before, when Carmella cashed in on Charlotte Flair back in 2018.

Winner: Charlotte Flair, but eventually, IYO SKY

WWE Intercontinental Championship match: Gunther vs. Drew McIntyre

As of this writing, Gunther is a little more than a month away from surpassing Honky Tonk Man to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in history. Since I believe Gunther is going to break that record, the prediction is easily Gunther retaining.

However, I fully expect this to be a brutal affair that will leave a few bruises before it is said and done.

Winner: Gunther

MMA Rules: Shayna Baszler vs. Ronda Rousey

An MMA rules match is kind of hilarious given that WWE is about to be part of a media conglomerate that features the most prominent mixed martial arts promotion in the world under its umbrella.

If this match took place in the UFC, the prediction would definitely be Rousey winning. But since this is simulated combat and not real fighting, I’m going to go with Baszler to pick up the much-needed win.

If the reports of Rousey stepping away from wrestling are true, it would make even more sense for Baszler to come away with the win and use it as a springboard to bigger and better things.

Winner: Shayna Baszler

Logan Paul vs. Ricochet

As I wrote back in a previous column, being paired with Paul has benefitted Ricochet. But like Tribal Combat, the outcome has never been in doubt.

Paul hasn’t won a match in over a year, and Ricochet represents a quality opponent to finally get back in the win column.

Winner: Logan Paul

SummerSlam Battle Royal

As of this writing, the full field has yet to be unveiled. However, I don’t need to see the entire field to know that this has be LA Knight’s moment to shine.

Winner: LA Knight

The road to WWE’s biggest party of the summer is coming to an end as SummerSlam will finally take place on Saturday, Aug. 5 and is sure to shake up the WWE landscape.

Roman Reigns and Jey Uso will engage in Tribal Combat for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. After years of building to this moment, despite these two having faced off before, it feels like a landmark instance in this storytelling. Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar will face off in what’s presumably the final chapter of their series. Each man has won once, so SummerSlam should determine who takes this best-of-three.
