Best photos of Ohio State and Virginia Tech in the NCAA Women’s Elite 8

We reflect on some of the best photos of Ohio State vs. Virginia Tech in the Elite 8 of the Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament. #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s basketball team had a great season and a memorable run in the Women’s NCAA Tournament, but it came to an end on Monday night in the Elite 8 vs. the Virginia Tech Hokies.

It was a back-and-forth offensive game in the first half, but that gave way to a slower-paced, more efficient game from Virginia Tech in the second half. The Hokies slowly pulled away and were able to do enough down the stretch to keep the Buckeyes within arm’s reach away to advance to the Final Four with an 84-74 victory.

OSU’s time in Seattle was one to remember and build upon, and we captured some of the best photos from all the action. Here are some of the best, high-resolution images from Ohio State vs. Virginia Tech in the Elite 8 of the Women’s NCAA Tournament Monday.

Run ends in NCAA Tournament Elite 8 for Ohio State women’s basketball

It was a good run! #GoBucks

It was a fun and memorable season for the Ohio State women’s basketball team, but its run in the NCAA Tournament ended on Monday night with a shot at the Final Four on the line. The Buckeyes fell to No. 1 seed Virginia Tech, 84-74.

At the end of the day, the Hokies were just too deep and too talented. More than anything, the Hokies were able to solve the riddle that was the Ohio State press, effectively taking the Buckeyes out of their bread-and-butter defensive game plan which everything else runs off of.

It was close for a while, including at the half when the Buckeyes went into the locker room down just 48-45 at halftime after a back-and-forth first two quarters that saw the lead change multiple times.

The second half was a different story though. Virginia Tech was able to use a very good inside-outside game between center Elizabeth Kitley and guard Georgia Amoore to keep OSU’s defense off balance. The Hokies slowly extended the lead as the second half went on and Ohio State seemed to run out of gas and out of opportunities.

Taylor Mikesll led the Buckeyes in scoring with 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 7-of-10 from 3-point range. Cotie McMahon and Jacy Sheldon also ended up in double figures to help the cause.

With the loss, Ohio State ends the season 28-8 with a very good run to its first Elite Eight appearance since 1993. Now, it’s time to turn the page and focus on building toward another good season for 2023-2024.

Photos of Ohio State women’s basketball win over North Carolina

Enjoy some of the best photos of Ohio State’s win over North Carolina in an epic second-round NCAA Tournament matchup. #GoBucks

Survive and advance. That’s the mantra teams live by in postseason play and that’s exactly what the Ohio State women did against North Carolina in a second-round matchup in the NCAA Tournament on Monday.

The Buckeyes led for most of the game, but the Tar Heels were able to finally close the gap and take their first lead with a little over two minutes to play. The ending was a white-knuckler that Jacy Sheldon and Ohio State wrestled away from UNC with a 71-69 score.

For contests as big as the one between Ohio State and North Carolina, we like to pick out some of the best photos and share them with you. Here’s what we were able to parse through and put into a picture gallery for your viewing pleasure.

Ohio State women win thriller vs. North Carolina to advance to Sweet 16

Moving on to the Sweet 16! #GoBucks

It was a battle, but the Ohio State women’s basketball team won a thriller, 71-69, against North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the Sweet 16.

The Buckeyes led almost the entire game, by as much as 12 points at one point, but the Tar Heels kept making runs to stay within arm’s reach and were able to finally erase the deficit, and take its first lead of the game, 67-66, with just 2:08 remaining in the game.

The last two minutes would be heart-pumping and adrenaline-inducing. Jacy Sheldon would wrestle the lead back at 1:08 remaining, 68-67, with a clutch, driving layup. Sheldon then made a free throw to stretch the lead to two, but North Carolina’s leading scorer, Deja Kelly, made a jumper in the lane to tie the score at 69 all with just 11 seconds remaining. It came after Kelly left the game with an ankle injury and came back to show guts and resilience.

But Sheldon wouldn’t have it. Ohio State called timeout and the OSU star got the ball in her hands one more time, somehow wiggled her way into the lane, and hit a fall-away teardrop to put the Lady Bucks up 71-69 with just 1.9 seconds left.

Carolina’s desperation play from the sideline out-of-bounds play couldn’t connect, and with it, Ohio State advanced to the Sweet 16.

The Buckeyes were led by Taylor Mikesell’s 17 points, but Jacy Sheldon (16 points), Eboni Walker (15 points), and Cotie McMahon (14 points) also had impressive games to balance out the scoring. Sheldon put on her cape in the last couple of minutes of winning time.

What kept the game close, and what will need to be addressed, is Ohio State’s struggles in the turnover department. It’s unusual for OSU’s stifling press to not give the Buckeyes an advantage in turnovers, but the offense gave the ball away 21 times to UNC. That offset a better shooting percentage from the floor and an advantage on the free-throw line for OSU.

Ohio State will now turn the page and head to Seattle to take on the winner of No. 7 seed Baylor and No. 2 seed UConn. That matchup will take place on Saturday at a determined time.

Ohio State women’s basketball vs. James Madison NCAA photo gallery

Re-live the Lady Bucks’ win over James Madison in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s basketball team is moving on in the NCAA Tournament after defeating James Madison in the first round in Columbus on Friday 80-66. Though the Buckeyes started out slowly, they were able to make a push and seize the game in the second half  “survive and advance.”

It was nice for Buckeye fans to be able to see Ohio State host the first round at home, and it was even nicer for some of the hometown photos that were able to be snapped.

Here are some of the best high-resolution photos of OSU’s win over James Madison in first-round action of the NCAA Tournament. Happy scrolling.

Ohio State women’s basketball advances to second round of NCAA Tournament with win over James Madison

Survive and advance! #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s basketball team has had an up-and-down season. It started by breaking a program record by winning its first 19 games and rising to No. 2 in the national rankings. It then hit a bit of a skid because of some injuries and the competition level in the Big Ten, but ended the season again on a high note with a run to the conference championship game including a win over No. 2 Indiana before succumbing to Iowa with a Big Ten title on the line.

And now, as a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Buckeyes did what they needed against James Madison to advance to the second round with an 80-66 win in Columbus Saturday.

But things didn’t start the greatest for Ohio State. James Madison came out and took it to the Buckeyes and actually led 26-14 after the first period. OSU was able to turn up the defensive pressure after some poor shooting early and get more success on the offensive end to win the second period, closing the half on a 15-2 run to close to 37-34 at halftime.

Ohio State continued to play solid defense in the second half, and both teams played pretty even in the third period before the Buckeyes went on a 9-0 run to gain a little separation and entered the fourth period up 54-50 after a mini-run by Dukes to close out the period.

The fourth period belonged to Ohio State. The Buckeyes started the final stanza on an 8-0 run to go up by 12 and finished the game up by double digits throughout, finishing things with a fourteen-point victory.

OSU freshman Cotie McMahon led all scorers with 18 points, but Jacy Sheldon (17 points), Taylor Thierry (15 points), and Taylor Mikesell (14 points) also notched double digits in the effort. Even more promising, Sheldon played 36 minutes coming as she still works her way back from injury. Spending that much time on the floor only makes Ohio State that much better if that trend continues.

Ohio State will now face the North Carolina Tar Heels on Monday in the second round for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16.
