Wisconsin vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

The shocker of the Wisconsin loss to Illinois wasn’t that it lost. It’s that it was about to outrebound the Illini.

This is not normal a dominant Badger team on the boards, but it’s had its moments. Penn State is coming off a 52-rebound game in the double overtime win over Iowa, it’s been terrific on the offensive glass over the last few games, and it needs to step it all up to make up for any shooting issues – more on that in a moment.

Wisconsin lost to the Illini because it couldn’t hit a thing from three and Illinois was lights out from the field. Penn State has generate makable shots inside, it needs to take advantage of every way to score points – like on the free throw line, and …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Penn State hasn’t been great lately from the field.

It shot okay against Iowa, but the team wasn’t able to hit 40% in any of the three previous games, and it struggles lately to get to 45%.

Wisconsin’s defense isn’t anything special – this isn’t the D you’re used to – it manages to keep teams to around 70 or under. The Badgers have only allowed double-digit threes once – a win over Texas A&M – and Penn State hasn’t hit ten or more from the outside since January 2nd.

Wisconsin wins by making just about everything from the free throw line, not turning the ball over, and making the most of its possessions as the game goes on.

Penn State isn’t good at coming up with easy points, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Wisconsin’s defense really is just that bad at keeping teams from hitting their shots.

You have to work to not make 40% of your shots against this defense, but Penn State has a hard time scoring. It doesn’t play any sort of an up-tempo style, it only scored more than 67 points six times, and it’s 1-7 when it doesn’t come up with at least 35 rebounds.

Only six teams have come up with 35 or more rebounds against Wisconsin.

Why Penn State Will Win

It took a massive second half rally, but Penn State managed to get by Nebraska 72-66 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament to keep its season going for at least one more day.

The difference was on the free throw line. Penn State didn’t shoot well overall, but it made 23 free throws, the Huskers only made nine, and now comes the same plan that worked over the last few games – go to the basket and be more aggressive – against a Wisconsin team that’s among the worst in the Big Ten at fouling.

The two played back-to-back games in late January/early February, with the Nittany Lions taking the first one by forcing too many Badger outside misses and being a bit sharper from the field … and they made 13 more free throws. But …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The Badgers won the rematch by clamping down defensive and hitting a few more shots from the outside in the 72-56 win. It also helped that they made seven more free throws.

Wisconsin is on a disastrous run of five losses in the last six games, but to be fair, the losses were to Michigan, Iowa and Illinois to go along with road wins at Purdue and Iowa – no real shame there.

The team was at least competitive in the road losses, but the defense is struggling against teams with a decent inside presence – and Illinois hit from everywhere.

What’s Going To Happen

Even at 16-11, Wisconsin is almost certainly in the NCAA Tournament thanks to a brutal schedule that’s among the toughest in the nation. However, get rocked by Penn State, and things start to get a wee bit dicey.

The Nittany Lions aren’t going to dominate on the boards like they did against Nebraska. Wisconsin won’t exactly look like its about to do anything big, but it’ll shoot well enough to move on.

Wisconsin (13-5) vs Penn State (6-7) Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

We just did this, and it wasn’t pretty.

Penn State got hot, Wisconsin couldn’t shoot, and it was an 81-71 Nittany Lion win that wasn’t even that close.

This is a plucky team that doesn’t turn the ball over and forces a ton of mistakes – which screws up a Wisconsin team that lives off of turnovers and not making mistakes. The Badgers didn’t give the ball up much – just 12 times – but Penn State only gave it up six times in an air-tight performance.

The D is terrific at bothering teams from three and it’s great on the offensive boards – again, out-Wisconsining, Wisconsin, but …

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Penn State’s game doesn’t travel.

For whatever reason – mostly because they played a slew of killers – the Nittany Lions can’t win on the road going 0-5 in Big Ten play. Wisconsin might not always by a rock at home, but it’s usually able right the wrong.

This is a flaky-weird team that isn’t able to impose its will as often as it should, but it figures stuff out. It was whacked by Maryland earlier in the year, and then went on the road last week and shut it all down in a win in the rematch.

The Badgers aren’t going to get whacked in the turnover battle twice in a row by the same team, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, it was a rough shooting day for the Badgers, but Penn State’s defense – while fantastic at guarding the three – is miserable overall allowing teams to hit over 47% from the field.

Again, we just did this, and it wasn’t pretty.

It’s not going to be pretty this time around, either.

Wisconsin (13-4) vs Penn State (5-7) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Now that’s the Badger team we all know and love.

After getting drop-kicked by Ohio State at home, Wisconsin took control early against Maryland, played fantastic D, and was able to get a good road win. This isn’t one of the superstar UW teams of the recent past, but it doesn’t screw up, the defense is still nasty, and it can hit the three.

Penn State doesn’t play a whole lot of defense, doesn’t do enough on the boards, and it struggles from the field. However …

Why Penn State Will Win

The Nittany Lions will get after the three point shooters.

This is hardly a bad team – it played Ohio State tougher this week than the Badgers did last weekend – and it started to find a three point groove over the last few games. The Nittany Lions haven’t been able to play a ton of games, and they just now appear to be getting their game on.

Wisconsin isn’t going to come out and blow off anyone’s doors. Keep it close at home, take advantage of every opportunity, don’t turn the ball over, and get out on the three. Penn State can do all of that.

What’s Going To Happen

Wisconsin is actually a bit better when it’s able to open things up just a bit and score in the transition, but that’s just not what it does. It has geared things down to a stop as Big Ten play has gone on, but it’s been effective enough to get by.

Penn State will have a good run in the first half to take control of the game, but the Badgers will methodically push back in the second half and pul away late on free throws. They’re great on the line and Penn State isn’t.
