Wisconsin at Michigan: Three things to know

  1. Wisconsin, which enters on a two-game win streak, is 7-1 in its last eight games. However, the Badgers are just 4-3-1 ATS in that span, most recently failing to cover as 9-point home favorites in an 80-73, double-overtime win vs. Indiana Thursday. Senior G D’Mitrik Trice, who scored a team-high 21 points vs. the Hoosiers, leads four Badgers in double figures with 14.8 points per game, along with a team-best 3.7 assists per game. Senior F Micah Potter averages 12.5 PPG and is UW’s top rebounder at 7.0 RPG.
  2. Michigan has covered the spread four games in a row and is 7-1 ATS in its last eight. The Wolverines are coming off impressive back-to-back home victories against Top 25 teams, beating then-No. 22 Northwestern 85-66 as 9.5-point favorites Jan. 3 and then-No. 17 Minnesota 82-57 as 7.5-point favorites Wednesday. Freshman C Hunter Dickinson has led the Wolverines in scoring in five of their last six games, and in rebounding in seven of the last eight. He averages team-bests in points (18.0 PPG), rebounds (8.1 RPG) and blocks (1.4 BPG).
  3. Wisconsin and Michigan have alternated wins in the last four tilts of the head-to-head series. The Badgers took the single meeting last season, upsetting the then-No. 19 Wolverines 81-74 as 6.5-point road underdogs Feb. 27, 2020. Trice scored a team-high 28 points for Wisconsin in the win.

Wisconsin at Michigan: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan 75, Wisconsin 69

Money line (ML)

PASS. The Wolverines will remain undefeated, but their -175 money line price is not worth the risk.

Against the spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN -3.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Wolverines are flat-out the better team. The line is small enough that if the they don’t have a late double-digit lead, they should cover the spread from the foul line down the stretch. Their 77.8% free-throw shooting ranks 19th in the country – and first in the Big Ten.

Plus, Michigan’s returning players will look to avenge last season’s home loss to Wisconsin.

ATS: Wisconsin 5-6-1 | Michigan 8-2

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the OVER 134.5 (-115). Michigan averages 82.5 PPG overall and 78.6 PPG in Big Ten games, while Wisconsin is scoring at a 76.5-PPG clip and 73.4 PPG in conference games.

The fear is that Wisconsin features the Big Ten’s best defense in points allowed at 61.5 PPG. That shouldn’t be an issue with Michigan on its home floor.

O/U records: Wisconsin 8-4 | Michigan 6-4

Wisconsin at Michigan: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan 27, Wisconsin 24

Money line (ML)

Wisconsin (-193) is the money line favorite, but it hasn’t played since Oct. 23 due to a COVID-19 outbreak. MICHIGAN (+160) hasn’t played well this season, but I’m backing the Wolverines since this game is in Ann Arbor. Historically, Michigan has had a lot of success at home against Wisconsin, winning seven of its last eight meetings. Given the value here, take MICHIGAN (-160) to win and avoid a third consecutive loss.

Against the spread (ATS)

If the money line proves to be too risky of a bet, consider taking MICHIGAN (+4.5). While Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz’s status is still in question, it’s hard to bet on the Badgers. Michigan doesn’t inspire a lot of trust either, but it does have an impressive win over Minnesota on its resume. Look for this game to come down to the last few plays and for the Wolverines to stay within a field goal.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total of 58.5 feels about right given the struggles of the defenses. However, with the questionable status of several key Wisconsin offensive players, take the UNDER as both teams will look to run the ball to control the clock.
