Winthrop continues what has been a busy start to the 2022-23 season. The Eagles went 2-1 in 3 games last week. In their last game on Saturday, they covered a 2.5-point line with a 76-68 home win over Middle Tennessee. WU held the Blue Raiders to a 37.5% mark from the field.

The Tigers are coming off solid defensive efforts in winning their 1st 2 games. Friday’s game against South Florida was a test. The Bulls led the game much of the way, but a 2nd-half surge by the host Tigers, a 19.5-point favorite, put them over the top 67-59. Auburn takes the floor Tuesday looking for its 21st consecutive victory on home hardwood.

The Eagles do have more of a history with big-conference foes than you might think. But Auburn isn’t just a top-75 squad. The Tigers have significant advantages in the key rebounding and turnover components of the game. But a 17-to-20-point range seems about right.

The Over is 5-1-1 in the Eagles’ last 7 games against teams with a winning percentage above-.600. Above and beyond that, Winthrop brings back much of a team that a year ago played a handful of games against top-100 types. The results of those games were overwhelmingly in the Over camp. Same thing when the Eagles met Penn State in their Nov. 7 opener: the Over cleared by 17.5 points.

Big South Championship: Winthrop vs. Longwood odds, picks and prediction

The Longwood Lancers (25-6) face the Winthrop Eagles (23-8) Sunday in the Big South Conference championship game. Tip-off from Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte is scheduled for noon ET (ESPN2). Below, we look at the Longwood vs. Winthrop odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The top-seeded Lancers rolled through their first two tourney games. They topped North Carolina A&T 79-65 in overtime – outscoring the Aggies 16-2 in OT – to cover as 6.5-point favorites in a quarterfinal, and beat ousted USC Upstate 79-70, also as 6.5-point faves, in a Saturday semifinal. Both games cashed Over tickets.

The second-seeded Eagles dispatched High Point 68-51 in a quarterfinal and Gardner-Webb 76-67 in a semifinal. They covered both spreads, -4.5 and -7, respectively, while posting a 1-1 Over/Under mark.

Longwood (15-1 Big South regular season) and Winthrop (14-2) met just once in this season with the Lancers winning at home 92-88 and covering as 2.5-point favorites. The Over (142.5) comfortably connected.

Money line

Longwood has dominated all season in the Big South, but WINTHROP (-120) is the play to win outright and lock up this automatic bid.

The Eagles entered this conference tourney as the only legitimate threat to the Lancers, although NC A&T certainly put a scare into Longwood in the quarterfinals.

The fact this game is played in Charlotte, just a quick ride up from Winthrop’s home of Rock Hill, S.C., should lead to a pro-Eagles crowd. That should help get the Eagles over the hump for a victory.

Against the spread

WINTHROP -1.5  (-105) failed to cover in the 4-point loss at Longwood in the only regular-season meeting between the two.

The Eagles certainly would have liked a crack at the Lancers on their home hardwood during the regular season. Now, they must settle for the next best thing, which is a neutral-floor game in Charlotte, just a short drive from campus.

Over/Under

The OVER 146.5 (-112) is the lean. While Winthrop hit the Under in its two Big South tourney games, it closed the regular season on a 4-0 Over run, going for 81 or more points in each game.

These teams combined for 180 total points in their first meeting, too.

The 5-seed Villanova Wildcats (16-6) take on the 12-seed Winthrop Eagles (23-1) Friday at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis for a 9:57 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Villanova-Winthrop odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

The Wildcats were stunned in their first game of the Big East Tournament against eventual champ Georgetown 72-71 March 11. Villanova has had a tough time adjusting after losing senior G Collin Gillespie to a season-ending knee injury March 3. In the two games without him, the ‘Cats are 0-2 SU/ATS, averaging just 61.5 PPG.

Winthrop ran through the Big South en route to its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2017. While the Eagles had tremendous success in the regular season, that hasn’t always been the case in the Big Dance. They have won just once in 10 appearances, a 2007 first-round win over Notre Dame before bowing out to Oregon as an 11-seed. Their current 12-seed is the second-highest in school history behind that 2007 club.

Villanova (-300) will cost you three times your potential return. It’s a little risky since the Wildcats are 0-2 SU/ATS since Gillespie went down, and they’re facing a Winthrop side that has lost just once this season. But who have the Eagles really played in the Big South? They played just one NCAA Tournament team in UNC Greensboro, and that was in the opener Dec. 1 on a neutral floor. The Eagles beat the Spartans 75-67 as six-point underdogs, but again, their strength of schedule is a little suspect.

Against the spread (ATS)

WINTHROP +7 (-110) could give Villanova a scare as the Eagles have rolled up 79.2 PPG to rank 35th in the nation. Again, their SOS wasn’t great, and they played just one quality opponent. ‘Nova should put up plenty of points against Winthrop’s defense, which coughs up points to the tune of 68.3 PPG, ranking 123rd in the country.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 142.5 (-115) is the play. Winthrop averaged 81.7 PPG in its three Big South Tournament games. Even through the Under went 2-0-1 in those contests, and 5-0-1 in the Eagles’ past six, Villanova is a much more quality opponent, who will put up points. The Wildcats, who hit the Over in their loss to Georgetown, averaged 75.8 PPG during the season, while hitting 35.5% of their 3-pointers. It won’t be a track meet, but it won’t be a defensive slog, either.
