This offseason prediction doesn’t bode well for Jameis Winston

See what ESPN thinks will be the ultimate future for Jameis Winston in Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston entered 2019 playing on a “prove it” deal — the fifth and final year of his rookie contract. The Bucs wanted to see if the former number one overall pick could right his game under QB guru Bruce Arians. A strong season by Winston would’ve likely earned him the long-term deal he’s been hoping to get.

But Winston ended up having one of the most bizarrely awesome seasons in NFL history, throwing for 5,109 yards, 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. The Bucs seem no closer now to making a decision than they did entering the season.

And, in ESPN’s offseason predictions for every team, Jenna Laine predicts that if Winston does get a new deal from Tampa Bay, it won’t be the one he wants.

“The Bucs haven’t decided if he’s the long-term answer and would rather pursue a shorter-term deal, such as a franchise tag or two-year deal, while Winston wants more long-term security.”

I think Tampa Bay’s patience is running out with their quarterback. While I think bringing Winston back for another year is ultimately the right decision, investing in him long term right now just doesn’t make sense.

Save the long-term contract for Shaq Barrett.

NFL exec on Jameis Winston: ‘I don’t see how you can pay him’

See why one NFL executive thinks the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be crazy to give QB Jameis Winston a big-money contract.

Super Bowl LIV may be the main event come Sunday, but Super Bowl week is all about the latest rumors swirling about as the league prepares for free agency in a little over a month.

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers having a number of big-name free agents that can hit the open market, it’ll be interesting to see which financial moves and players take precedence when the time comes to open the bank.

When it comes to quarterback Jameis Winston, who had a statistical season for the ages, throwing for over 5,000 yards, while also throwing 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, one NFL exec told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler he doesn’t think the quarterback warrants a big contract after what he showed in 2019.

“I don’t see how you can pay him. It would have to be pretty reasonably low if they did. You can’t give him big money based on the way he played. He won’t have a market.”

Should the Buccaneers bring Winston back in 2020, I think most people believe it’ll be on a short-term deal. Basically, 2020 would be the final year for Winston to prove himself as the team’s franchise quarterback going forward.

The question now is, how much will it cost to retain Winston’s services?

Shaq Barrett says Bucs still believe in Jameis Winston ‘as crazy as it sounds’

Despite throwing for 30 interceptions this season, Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett says the team still believe in QB Jameis Winston.

The future of Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston will once again dominate headlines this offseason until we get a definitive answer from the team about whether or not they plan on keeping the former first overall pick around for another year.

After an historic season that saw Winston become the eighth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season, and the first to throw 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a season, the team can choose to go a number of different directions, including taking a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft.

But, if you ask Bucs linebacker Shaq Barrett, who had an historic season of his own by setting the franchise record for sacks in a season with 19.5, the team still believe in Winston, “as crazy as it sounds.”

Take a look at his interview from the 2020 Pro Bowl where he discusses the Bucs quarterback and his potential future with the team.

ESPN says this infamous Jameis Winston quote was one of the best of 2019

See which quote by Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston earned a spot on ESPN’s list of the best quotes from the 2019 NFL season.

The 2019 season was all about quarterback Jameis Winston, and whether or not he deserved a new contract from the Bucs. The former Heisman Trophy winner was playing on the fifth and final year of his rookie contract, and the Bucs front office had hoped that bringing in Bruce Arians would help right the quarterback’s career.

But, after throwing for over 5,000 yards and becoming the first quarterback ever with 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a season, Winston is in a wait-and-see mode right now with the Bucs, who are still deciding what to do with the top overall pick from the 2015 draft.

But, Winston’s erratic play wasn’t the only memorable thing about him this season. According to ESPN, who recently listed some of the best quotes from the 2019 NFL season, Winston’s take on “the glass half full” scenario was too good not to remember.

“The glass is always full. It might be half-full with water, it’s still full with air.”

— Winston, following a 40-34 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 5. Winston would strike his own kind of balance this season by becoming the first QB to have 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season.

Here’s the video for you in all its glory.

This one fan has Jameis Winston’s back when it comes to this debate

Find out why one fan was quick to come to Jameis Winston’s defense and that of the 2013 Florida State football team.

LSU captured the national championship Monday night with a decisive victory over the Clemson Tigers. LSU finished the year undefeated, and saw their quarterback, Joe Burrow, go from virtual unknown to a Heisman Trophy winner and lock to be the top pick in April’s NFL draft.

LSU’s dominance, and Burrow’s in particular, have many people debating how great this LSU team and quarterback is when compared to other great teams in college football history.

Bleacher Report tweeted out the below image yesterday to try and kick off a debate.

But, it seems one fan wasn’t too pleased about the 2013 Florida State team being left off this list, including that team’s quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Winston threw for 4,057 yards with 40 touchdowns and 10 interceptions that year while winning the Heisman Trophy as a freshman. I’d say more than a few FSU and college football fans would consider that 2013 team among the best ever.

The last quarterback to throw 30 interceptions in a season also played for the Bucs

Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston has 28 interceptions on the year, but wouldn’t be the first Bucs QB to throw 30 interceptions in a year.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers saw their winning-streak end at four yesterday with their 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans.

What fans also saw was the end of the Bucs’ offensive dominance. Without top playmakers in wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, quarterback Jameis Winston, who was battling a thumb injury, threw four interceptions, including another pick-six.

Winston has now thrown 31 touchdowns and 28 interceptions on the season to go along with 4,908 yards. It’s been a crazy statistical year for the former number one pick, but, he can breath a sigh of relief knowing that the Buccaneers plan on bringing him back in 2020. Winston was playing this season on the fifth and final year of his rookie contract.

With just one game left in the regular season, Winston is now on pace to throw for 30 interceptions, which would make him the first quarterback since 1988 to accomplish that feat.

The quarterback who last did it? Vinny Testaverde for the Buccaneers with 35.

Unlike, Winston, however, Testaverde threw for only 13 touchdowns that year. Winston has 31 on the year heading into Week 17, where he could become the first quarterback ever to throw for 30 touchdowns, 30 interceptions and 5,000 yards in the same season.

You can’t say he isn’t fun to watch. Just ask Bill Simmons.

Jameis Winston’s early interceptions against Texans may actually be a good thing

Find out why Jameis Winston throwing two early picks against the Texans may be good for the Buccaneers in the long run.

Yes, Jameis Winston threw an interception on the team’s opening drive again. Yes, it was returned for a pick-six. And, yes, he threw another pick on Tampa Bay’s next drive.

But, hey, he still deserves a new contract, right? Apparently, so.

While Winston looks like he’ll be back in Tampa next year, the team better hope he can fix his turnover problem. He has 26 interceptions on the year. But, as frustrating as that may be for Bucs fans, there’s some good news to be had, too.

Take a look.

So, while the Bucs may still have a shot at winning today against the Texans, the stats on Winston should certainly make the Bucs wary about offering him any long-term deal.
