Long before Golden State drafted a center with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia edition of the Warriors were led by a Hall of Fame piece in their frontcourt during their 1960 campaign.

Along with his long list of accolades and achievements, Wilt Chamberlain registered a historic record-breaking performance against Bill Russell and the Boston Celtics in a 1960 contest.

Nov. 24, 1960

After starting the season 11-4 in 1960, the Warriors welcomed the defending NBA champion Celtics to the Philadelphia Arena. During the tilt against Russell and the Celtics, Chamberlain snatched an NBA record 55 rebounds.

Chamberlain also added 34 points on 15-of-42 shooting from the field with four assists in all 48 minutes. Despite Chamberlain’s record-breaking moment, it wasn’t enough to slow down the Celtics.

Russell notched a double-double effort of his own, scoring 18 points and grabbing 19 boards. Tom Heinsohn lead the way for Boston with 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field. Heinsohn notched nine rebounds and two assists.

Sam Jones and Bob Cousy also tallied 20 plus point performances in Boston’s 132-129 victory in Philadelphia.
