Instant analysis after Jets’ 24-17 win over Titans in Week 2

Instant analysis after the New York Jets defeated the Tennessee Titans 24-17 in Week 2

The Jets got to 1-1 after a tough win over a gritty Tennessee Titans team in Week 2, giving them some momentum heading into their home opener Thursday against the New England Patriots during Week 3’s “Thursday Night Football” matchup.

Let’s talk some notes from the game.

Offensively, the Jets (1-1) seem to have already figured out how to utilize running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen on offense. Hall (14 carries for 62 yards, seven catches for 52 yards and a touchdown) remains the lead back but the rookie Allen (seven carries for 33 yards, two catches for 23 yards and a touchdown) is already solidly in the mix behind him. The two combined for 95 yards on 21 carries as the Jets were able to find success on the ground.

New York took advantage of Titans’ miscues with turnovers and turning those into points. The Jets turned an interception of Tennessee (0-2) quarterback Will Levis into a touchdown on a 12-play drive (Allen’s 12-yard reception from Aaron Rodgers). They also got a blocked punt from Irv Charles and scored three on the insinuating drive.

New York then kept alive following a roughing the passer penalty on Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. That drive culminated with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers to Hall to give the Jets their first lead of the game at 14-10.

The Jets got it done in all three phases of the game. They were steady on offense, particularly in the second half to take advantage of the game late, had key turnovers on defense and their special teams came up clutch as well with the blocked punt. The Jets were actually out-gained by the Titans 300-265. Both teams were 5-of-12 on third down. Overall, the teams were pretty even in numbers. Just goes to show how turnovers can help determine a game outcome. The Jets had two takeaways, the Titans had zero.

The Jets were helped by some wacky play from Levis, truth be told. No one has any idea what he was thinking on that throw early in the game. The Jets were quite fine with it, however, as they recovered a fumble via linebacker Quincy Williams.

Overall, a solid day for the offense. That side of the ball started moving better as the day wore on and the defense got to Levis four times and picked him off once. The big story, though, is the continued pile of injuries for the Jets. Linebacker C.J. Mosley left with a foot injury. But the big injury was the likely torn Achilles for edge Jermaine Johnson. The breakout star of 2023 is already done for 2024 in heartbreaking fashion. All eyes now turn to Haason Reddick and whether this will make the Jets cave in on a new deal for Reddick to help fill the void.

It’s now a quick turnaround for the Jets. They play again in just a few days in their home opener set for Thursday against the Patriots. New England fell 23-20 in overtime to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.

Lip readers figured out what a furious Brian Callahan told Will Levis after his senseless fumble

Brian Callahan is already so sick of Will Levis.

We’re not even two weeks into the 2024 NFL regular season, and the Tennessee Titans already appear to be coming apart at the seams. But that’s what happens when a franchise’s head coach and quarterback aren’t on the same page.

With Tennessee sitting pretty against the New York Jets, Will Levis senselessly threw a backward shovel pass in the red zone to avoid a sack and … fumbled instead. It’s the latest in a catalog of bone-headed plays by the young quarterback as he tries to establish a stronger footing in the NFL.

But while everyone watching couldn’t believe Levis’s decision-making, Titans head coach Brian Callahan was even more irate just days after ripping Levis for not playing smart.

And if you know how to read lips, you probably can see Callahan’s NSFW words clear as day:

Tennessee seems to be building a quality program. But if the head coach can’t trust his quarterback, I’m not sure how long this operation will last.

Will Levis derailed a Titans drive when he inexplicably fumbled in the red zone on a pointless shovel pass

Will Levis might be one of the stupidest NFL QBs in a long time.

After a long week where he gave away an opening Tennessee Titans’ win with a horrific pick-six to the Chicago Bears’ Tyrique Stevenson, Will Levis had a chance to redeem himself on Sunday.

Instead, it kinda seems like we’re only gonna see more devastating surrender cobras from the quarterback.

With the Titans trying to build on a good quality start against the New York Jets, all Levis had to do was play within himself in the red zone. Either he’d take a good shot at the end zone, take the sack, or get rid of the ball. No matter what, as long as Levis played it smartly, the Titans would hold a double-digit lead late in the first half.

But that’s the key. Levis seems to be incapable of making the right play. While getting sacked, the quarterback decided to throw out a needless shovel pass that turned into a Jets fumble recovery because it was technically going backward.

Just … why?

I have no idea what Levis is thinking at this moment. Why on Earth did he think this would be a productive play for the Titans? At some point, you gotta eat the sack and live to fight another day, man. Turnovers happen when you refuse to wave the white flag.

Titans vs. Jets: 3 best player prop bets for Week 2

The Tennessee Titans take on the New York Jets in Week 2 and here’s a look at three of the best player prop bets.

The Tennessee Titans are looking to bounce back in Week 2 after losing a heartbreaker to the Chicago Bears last Sunday.

Even with this game being the home opener, the Titans are 3.5-point underdogs against the New York Jets, per BetMGM. The Jets also lost in Week 1, so it may officially be panic time for the loser of this one.

Let’s look at the three best player prop bets you should consider if you plan on betting on this game.

Tyjae Spears OVER 23.5 rushing yards

After Week 1, head coach Brian Callahan expressed disappointment that Tyjae Spears wasn’t more involved.

“Tony [Pollard] ran the ball, and he was doing a nice job,” Callahan said, via team reporter Jim Wyatt. “But I’d like to get more for Tyjae [Spears]. I’d like him to get rolling a little bit more. We can make that division of labor probably a little closer to equal. … I regret that part of it.”

Well, expect Spears to be involved in Week 2. The Jets allowed 49ers backup running back Jordan Mason to gain 147 yards on the ground in Week 1, so there should be plenty of opportunities for Spears and Pollard. Spears easily surpasses this total.

Garrett Wilson UNDER 5.5 receptions

In Week 1, Garrett Wilson caught six passes for 60 yards. In Week 2, don’t expect the young star to reach the same total.

Wilson will likely be matched up against L’Jarius Sneed, who feels like he has something to prove after Week 1, even as the secondary played well.

In the past, the Titans have primarily been hurt by secondary receivers. Expect Wilson to get locked down on Sunday with Aaron Rodgers forced to distribute the ball elsewhere.

Will Levis OVER 195.5 passing yards

Will Levis had an awful Week 1 performance. However, the quarterback has expressed confidence that he can bounce back in Week 2, and I expect him to.

Levis’ passing yards total is under 200, which immediately makes me want to hammer the over. Brock Purdy threw for 231 yards last week, but his team was in control for much of the game.

This one could become a shootout where Levis has to stretch the ball down the field. I would not be surprised to see Levis bounce back with something like 250 yards and two touchdowns.

Titans insist Will Levis, Calvin Ridley are on the same page

Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis struggled on Sunday, especially connecting with Calvin Ridley. Are they on the same page? The Titans say yes.

The Tennessee Titans are looking to bounce back from their frustrating 24-17 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday when they take on the New York Jets in their home opener.

One of the biggest topics of the week has been quarterback Will Levis and his struggles against the Bears. Not only did he have issues with decision-making, but he also lacked accuracy and missed open receivers, including prized free agent acquisition Calvin Ridley, on some deep shots.

There has been a lot of talk throughout camp about the chemistry between Levis and Ridley and whether the quarterback and wide receiver are on the same page. Hearing from the Titans coaching staff, this is a non-issue.

Even if he is on the same page as Ridley, the combination has to produce more than they did against the Bears, where Ridley recorded three receptions for 50 yards on seven targets.  Levis was under a lot of pressure, but his stats of 19-of-32 for 127 yards and a touchdown but with two interceptions and a passer rating of 52.5 were below the line.

Fans will be able to see if there has been any improvement this Sunday when the Titans take on the Jets.

Titans’ Will Levis still has ‘all the confidence in the world’

Tennessee Titans QB Will Levis is coming off a dismal performance against the Chicago Bears, but his confidence remains high.

The fallout from the Tennessee Titans’ 24-17 loss to the Chicago Bears continues to grow, and quarterback Will Levis is at the center of concern.

There is no question that the young signal-caller struggled under pressure against the Bears, which led to some questionable decisions and terrible throws. Missing open receivers and throwing two picks, he was really not up to the task. Levis finished the Week 1 contest 19-of-32 for 127 yards and a touchdown but with two interceptions and a passer rating of 52.5.

Moving toward Week 2 and the home opener against the New York Jets, Levis still has confidence in his abilities and is sure he has the confidence of the team behind him.

While this is great to hear, his performance is what will matter. The Titans went all-in on building around Levis in the offseason, adding weapons to skill positions and fortifying the front line. After one week, the team showed promise, and their approach was sound. They have an outstanding defense in place; now they need Levis and the offense to match the defense.

Levis wasn’t the only reason the offense struggled; the offensive line didn’t do him many favors. But he is the face of the franchise and the player the Titans are counting on to guide the ship.

Levis must play better, make throws, and make sound decisions. If he doesn’t, it’s going to be a long season.

Alontae Taylor snubbed for Defensive Player of Week 1 recognition

Alontae Taylor was snubbed for the NFC Defensive Player of Week 1 award. Not everyone gets a Will Levis pick-six thrown right to them:

Credit where it’s due: Tyrique Stevenson made a big play when the ball was thrown to him. The Chicago Bears defensive back intercepted Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis and scored a game-changing touchdown on the return that left the second-year passer falling to his knees with his helmet in his hands in disbelief.

But come on. Anyone can intercept Levis. New Orleans Saints nickel Alontae Taylor was the first defensive back to record three sacks in a single game in team history. It’s just the thirteenth time in NFL history that a cornerback or safety has done that. But it was Stevenson recognized as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1.

Look a little deeper. Pro Football Focus charting found that Taylor was targeted 4 times against the Carolina Panthers, but he yielded just 35 yards and a single first down on 2 receptions, with a pass breakup. Stevenson was targeted 9 times and allowed 3 catches for 42 yards, each reception converting a first down, including a touchdown. He also had a pass breakup and that pick-six. In the official NFL gamebook, Taylor was credited with 5 tackles plus an 1 assist. Stevenson had 2 tackles and as many assists.

Both players enjoyed strong performances. But only one of them made history. Taylor will just have to wait for his recognition another day.

Bill Belichick discusses Titans QB Will Levis’ Week 1 performance

Bill Belichick joined Pat McAfee and discussed Titans QB Will Levis.

The Tennessee Titans rebuilt their roster heading into 2024 and already demonstrated they have built a stout defense. Now, they need their offense to develop.

While formulating their roster, the Titans made it clear that they were building around second-year quarterback Will Levis in the offseason, adding weapons to the skill positions and fortifying the front line.

This plan is sound, but it puts a ton of pressure on Levis. On Sunday, he clearly buckled under that pressure and was called out by one of the NFL greats.

Bill Belichick appeared on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Monday and touched on the young signal caller, stating, “There’s no upside to the play that Levis made yesterday.”

He was right. That play sealed the Titans’ fate in the loss and gave the Chicago Bears a lead they would never relinquish.

“The biggest thing for the quarterback is decision-making,” Belichick said, encapsulating the downfall.

The offense line struggled against the Bears front, but Levis made throws and decisions under pressure that cost the Titans a victory. For the Titans to win, Levis must show up and play better. If he doesn’t, it’s going to be a long season.

Levis and the Titans will be back in action Sunday when they take on the New York Jets in Week 2.
