Seahawks nominate Russell Wilson as team’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year

The Seattle Seahawks have announced quarterback Russell Wilson as the team’s nomination for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

The Seattle Seahawks made a very important announcement Thursday morning, nominating quarterback Russell Wilson as the team’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

The prestigious honor recognizes an NFL player for “outstanding community service activities off the field, as well as excellence on the field.”

Each team around the league can nominate one player for the award.

Wilson is widely known for his philanthropic and charitable efforts, especially through his Why Not You Foundation and weekly visits to Seattle Children’s Hospital.

“It’s been really important for Ciara and me, especially with everything that’s happened in 2020, to step up and try to make a difference in areas like racism, social injustice, and food insecurity and to be able to impact a family that is facing tough challenges,” Wilson said via the press release.

“Since I got here in 2012, I understood there was an opportunity to use my platform to love, serve, and give back,” Wilson continued. “That’s been one of the core principles of life that my parents taught me. It’s a principle that Ciara and I want to be able to teach not only our kids, but their kids one day.”

Russell Wilson shares recipe for his special mac n cheese

Russell Wilson loves to cook and is sharing his recipe for a special mac n cheese

Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks will be cooking Monday against the Philadelphia Eagles. When off the field, the quarterback enjoys spending time in the kitchen as Chef Russell. Let Russ Cook is the saying and he knows what to do.

He has decided to share one of his favorite — and most comforting — recipes.

Check out the way to work up Russell Wilson’s special mac n cheese.

It certainly would be a great accompaniment while watching Wilson and the Seahawks work on Monday Night Football.

The recipe is a feature of the Why Not You Foundation’s holiday campaign to help those in need. The foundation announced a partnership Monday to tackle the issue of hunger and support children and families most in need due to COVID-19.

“Let Russ Cook” aprons and wine can be purchased to help the cause here.

(The aprons are available at Safeway and Albertsons stores across Washington.)

The recipe from the quarterback who cooks on and off the field.

Russell’s Mac and Cheese

Stockpot

Whisk

9 X 13 baking dish or your favorite individual mac and cheese dishes

Aluminum foil

Ingredients

  • 1 pound cavatappi
  • 1 stick unsalted butter (8 Tbsp)
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups grated gruyere
  • 3 cups grated extra sharp cheddar
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt (add to taste at the end)

For Topping

  • 1/2 cup grated extra-sharp cheddar
  • 1/2 cup grated gruyere

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cook cavatappi in a large pot of salted boiling water.

Pro Tip: Cook to al dente (normally 2 minutes less than package instructions), because when you add to cheese sauce and bake it will cook a little more.

Drain pasta and rinse with cold water so it stops the cooking process.

In a stockpot over medium heat melt butter. Once butter is melted, add flour and whisk to combine. Keep whisking flour and butter mixture for 2 minutes.

Add milk and keep whisking. Whisk for another 2-4 minutes and the mixture will start to thicken.  Turn off heat and add gruyere, cheddar, pepper and seasoned salt to taste. Stir until cheese is melted. Add cooked cavatappi and stir to combine.

Pour into 9 X 13 baking dish and cover with aluminum foil.

Bake for 30 minutes.

Remove aluminum foil, add cheese for topping and bake for another 10 minutes uncovered until melted and bubbly on top.

Thanksgiving has passed but the time to help the less fortunate continues for Ciara and Russell Wilson’s Why Not You Foundation.

The foundation announced a partnership Monday to help tackle the issue of hunger and support children and families most in need due to COVID-19. The Why Not You Foundation is dedicated to fighting poverty through education.

The theme of this campaign will play off “Let Russ Cook,” which has become a big part of the Seattle Seahawk quarterback’s persona recently.

“We have always felt that the holidays should be centered around giving back to the community,” the Wilsons said in announcing the effort. “We are proud to be partnering with Betz Family Winery and Safeway to help United Way’s Ride United create a meaningful impact for those most in need this holiday season. Why Not You Foundation strives to create initiatives that align with our core pillars, and we really wanted to give this our personal touch for families to enjoy.”

The foundation continues to grow outside the Northwest

“Why Not You Foundation was founded in 2014 to create real change, one person at a time,” Executive Director Carly Young said via a statement to Touchdown Wire. “Over the years, we have expanded our work from Russell and Ciara’s backyard in Seattle to helping families nationwide. … Now fans and gift-givers can help us support those hit the hardest this holiday season.”

Russell Wilson receives award from Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was awarded the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation Award of Excellence thanks to his charity work.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson’s trophy case got a little bigger this month after he was awarded the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation Award of Excellence for his work in the fight against pediatric cancer.

Wilson joins an extremely impressive list of former honorees, including Hank Aaron, Brett Favre and Jim Kelly.

“My Dad made sure I understood the importance of helping others,” said Wilson about the honor. “I’m grateful to be in a position that allows me to give back in a meaningful way, and I’m honored to be selected by the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation for this honor. Individual efforts are important, but when we all come together, true impact is made.”

Since getting drafted, Wilson has spent his Tuesday’s at Seattle Children’s Hospital during the season, helping uplift the kids and their families. His ‘Why Not You Foundation’ has raised over $8 million dollars for the ‘Strong Against Cancer’ fundraising initiative over the past five years. Wilson is the team captain of the initiative, which has the goal of curing pediatric cancer with immunotherapy treatment.

This award recognizes individuals who have the desire to prevent cancer and find a cure, and who capture the spirit of commitment and pursuit of excellence embodied by former Packers coach Vince Lombardi.

Wilson, by all accounts, fits those metrics and is extremely deserving of this honor, given at the 30th anniversary of this event.
