Wendell Green Jr. is questionable for Sunday’s game at USC

Auburn’s leading scorer sustained an ankle injury in Wednesday’s win over Georgia State.

The No. 18 Auburn Tigers travel to the City of Angels on Sunday in hopes of earning a quality win but may have to do so without its leading scorer.

After suffering an ankle injury late in the second half of Auburn’s 72-64 win over Georgia State on Wednesday night, guard [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag]’s status for Sunday’s game at USC is unclear according to Auburn head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag].

The team arrived in Los Angeles Friday night and will practice Saturday morning at Galen Center, the venue for Sunday’s game against the Trojans. Pearl says that Saturday’s practice will be a telling sign for Green’s status.

“He will make the trip, and we’ll just evaluate him,” Pearl told the media on Thursday. “I think the issue there would be that flight going out there Friday if he was to practice and aggravate that thing. We really won’t know until probably Saturday or Sunday.”

If Green were to not be able to play on Sunday, Pearl will most likely turn to freshman [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] to run the point. Donaldson was impressive against Georgia State.

“That’s the best Tre’s played,” Pearl said following Wednesday’s win. “But Tre’s also practiced really well, and I told Tre even before K.D. wasn’t playing, I told Tre he was going to be in the rotation. I was ready to go back and give him that shot. The bottom line is that he took advantage of it when he was out there on the floor. … He’ll play some more. Specifically, he’ll probably back up (Green Jr.). We’ll see. I also played him at some 2 tonight because he was playing so well.”

Green is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 13.8 points per game. In Wednesday’s game against Georgia State, Green scored 17 points, with 11 of those coming from the free-throw stripe before sustaining the injury with less than a minute remaining in the victory.

That poor shooting had the Tigers trailing 31-28 at the break but [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] was able to keep the game close with nine first-half points thanks to making seven foul shots.

[autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] was able to take over in the second half, scoring 13 points as he went 8-of-9 from the field. He finished with 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tigers.

Tiger of the Game: Jaylin Williams sweeps votes after stellar performance

The Tigers trailed Georgia State, 31-28 due to poor shooting. Auburn was only able to connect on 32% of their shots, and could not take advantage of rebounds.

The lone bright spot in the first half was the effort of [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag]. He would score 13 more in the second half, which was vital to Auburn’s second-half surge, which ended with Auburn earning the 72-64 win.

Instant Analysis: Williams’ epic night lifts Auburn over Georgia State

Jaylin Williams was strong in every aspect of Auburn’s 72-64 win over Georgia State.

Once again, the No. 18 Auburn Tigers got off to a slow first-half start in Wednesday’s game against Georgia State. But a robust second-half surge led by [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] guided the Tigers to a 72-64 win at Neville Arena.

Williams was perfect in the first half, succeeding on both shots from the field and the free-throw line, and made a basket from beyond the arc on his way to scoring seven points. He would carry that momentum into the second half, by adding 13 points to his total. He was also vital to the defensive game by pulling down eight rebounds in the win. His 20-point performance is his best since he scored 21 points in a 91-86 losing effort to Georgia on Feb. 2, 2020.

Auburn’s fortunes under the basket improved in the second half also, which was vital to pulling away from the Panthers. The Tigers were able to score 42 points underneath and were able to pull down 13 rebounds.

Auburn got off to another slow start shooting the basketball, making just 22% of their shots by the under-eight timeout. Despite poor shooting from the field, Auburn was able to grab a 15-12 lead over Georgia State by connecting on 6-of-6 free throw shots.

The trend continued to grow until halftime, as Auburn would connect on just 7-of-22 shots in the first half, and trailed Georgia State, 31-28. Georgia State dominated close to the basket as well, outscoring Auburn 14-12 in the paint, and outrebounding the Tigers 18-13. [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] led the team in scoring with nine points through one half.

The Tigers’ offensive production improved through the first five minutes of the second half. Williams came out hot by scoring five quick points, helping his team reach 50% shooting at the under-15 timeout.

Auburn used a 10-2 run to retake the lead at the 13:18 mark in the second half. Green charged the basket and earned a three-point play to put Auburn back in front, 39-38. He would succeed on his free throw opportunity, to put Auburn ahead by two points.

Behind Williams, Green Jr. scored 17 points while [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] added 13 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks.

Auburn moves to 9-1 on the season, and will now set off on its west coast expedition. The first stop on the journey will be Los Angeles, California to meet the USC Trojans on Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT.

Auburn picked up another hard-fought win Sunday in Neville Arena Sunday.

The Auburn Tigers edged out Saint Louis 65-60 Sunday in Neville Arena to improve to 7-0 on the season.

No. 13 Auburn stormed out to an early 14-3 lead but the Blues fought back and made it a back-and-forth game the rest of the way. Auburn entered the half leading 36-33 thanks to a big start from [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] Auburn’s point guard finished the half with 14 points in a bounce-back performance.

He finished with 22 points and [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] added 11 points, eight blocks, and eight rebounds to lead Auburn to victory.

Tigers of the Game: Green bounces back while Broome steps up defensively

Auburn earned a respectable win over Saint Louis on Sunday, thanks in part to the efforts of Wendell Green and Johni Broome.

The No. 16 Auburn Tigers returned to Neville Arena to compete against a solid program in Saint Louis on Sunday and put on quite a show for the fans in attendance.

The Tigers and Billikens went back and forth in Auburn’s 65-60 win on Sunday, swapping leads eight times throughout the game. [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag]’s monster dunk with 1:57 remaining in the game put Auburn ahead for the final time and led them to a victory.

Sunday’s win was a great bounce-back game for [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag], who led the team in scoring after making just 11% of his shots in Wednesday’s game against Northwestern in the Cancun Challenge Championship game.

“It was great,” head coach Bruce Pearl of Green’s performance in Sunday’s win. “Wendell has great confidence. Wendell has great poise, great preparation. Wendell has been playing at high levels his whole life, with the exception of the one year at Eastern Kentucky, he’s been at the highest level of basketball.”

[autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] was another factor in the game. He followed Green by scoring 11 points in the win over the Billikens but did most of his damage defensively.

How did Green and Broome stack up in “Tigers of the Game” voting? Here is a look at how writers Taylor JonesJ.D. McCarthy, and River Wells voted following Auburn’s win over Saint Louis.

Auburn still undefeated after tight game against Saint Louis

It was a tough battle, but the Tigers remain unconquered through seven games.

The Auburn Tigers basketball team is still unconquered, but it took some effort to make it so.

The Tigers defeated the Saint Louis Billikens 60-65 on Sunday to propel Auburn to a 7-0 record. The win was Auburn’s 43rd-straight victory at home against a non-conference opponent, a streak the team will hope to keep before it plays its first conference game against the Florida Gators at the end of December.

The game started off strong for Auburn, with the Tigers building a 13-4 lead with just over 14:39 left in the first half, but the Billikens made it tough as the half progressed. Saint Louis took its layups and played tough defense against Auburn’s contested threes, and they even took the lead over the Tigers at a few different points as the first half dwindled. Thanks in part to the efforts of [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag], the Tigers were able to end the half up by three points, 36-33.

Saint Louis played a tough second half, but it wouldn’t be enough to stop the Tigers. The defensive effort was particularly stout toward the end of the game, as Saint Louis only scored four points in the last five minutes of the game while the Tigers extended the lead on free throws and consistent baskets. An 11-4 run in that time span by Auburn sealed the game and allowed the Tigers to remain undefeated.

Green Jr. was the game’s highest-scoring player, putting up 17 points on the day. Auburn’s three-point percentage still leaves much to be desired, however, as the Tigers only managed to shoot 18.8 percent from beyond the arc – almost 10 percent less than what Saint Louis was able to accomplish over the game.

The Tigers will be in action next on Dec. 2 when they take on the Colgate Raiders at home in Neville Arena in an attempt to increase their out-of-conference home streak.
