War Ready falls to Herd That in second round of The Basketball Tournament

Wendell Green Jr. and company fell after leading the contest end-to-end until the late minutes of the third quarter

War Ready’s run at a TBT championship ended on Sunday afternoon, as the team full of Auburn alumni fell to the No. 1 seed in its region, Herd That 63-59.

Herd That, who is coming off of a semifinals appearance in last year’s event, is composed of mostly Marshall alumni. The contingent of former Thundering Herd have been a staple of “The Basketball Tournament” since  2018, although the team has only reached the quarterfinals twice. That didn’t stop Auburn’s Alumni from nearly taking down the experienced Herd.

[autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] and company led the contest end-to-end until the late minutes of the third quarter. Even after surrendering the lead, the Tigers led Herd That 55-49 heading into the “Elam Ending”, which creates a winning target score of 8 points higher than the leading team’s current score.

Unfortunately for War Ready, the bunch ran out of steam in the games final minutes, resulting in yet another disappointing finish in the tournament. The 22-year-old Green led the way for the Tigers with 19 points, while forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick was the only other War Ready player to contribute double figures. Fitzpatrick, who actually played his college basketball at South Florida, finished 1 rebound shy of a 13-point double-double.

As for Herd That, five players were able to contribute at least eight points. Star forward Jacorey Williams led the way with 13 on an impressive 6/9 from the field.

While another quick exit from War Ready at TBT is disheartening, head coach Marc Hughes has shown year after year he will do whatever it takes to get War Ready back in the fold next summer.

Wendell Green Jr. leads War Ready to first-round win at ‘The Basketball Tournament’

Green Jr led the way with 22 points as War Ready defeated the “D2 Waymakers” 80-72 in overtime.

For the fourth summer in a row, a basketball team full of former Auburn Tigers will be competing in the annual “TBT” Basketball Tournament.

While the team, fittingly named “War Ready”, hasn’t produced good results in tournaments past, this summer got off to a great start on Friday. Led by point guard [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag], War Ready picked up a win to open up the tournament by defeating the “D2 Waymakers” 80-72 in overtime.

The aforementioned 5-11 guard, who is still just 21 years of age led all scorers in the contest with 22 points. Green Jr. also added 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals in the overtime victory. 2019 NCAA Tournament darlings [autotag]Malik Dunbar[/autotag] and [autotag]J’Von McCormick[/autotag] were the only other former Tigers to score in double figures, scoring 12 and 14 points respectively. The duo shot an extremely impressive 12/16 (75%) from the field.

No other War Ready player scored more than 9 points. Former Tiger star [autotag]T.J Dunans[/autotag] specifically had a rough go of it. Despite bringing the most experience to the squad, Dunans did not score a point and committed 4 turnovers.

It seems like War Ready will go as far in The Basketball Tournament as the trio of Green Jr., Dunbar, and McCormick take them. While the opening night win is a step in the right direction, the former Tigers have a rough contest up next against No. 1 seed “Herd That”, a team full of Marshall alumni.

We’ll see if the team of Auburn Alumni can pull of the upset when the round of 32 game tips off Sunday at 12 PM CST on Fox Sports 2.

Auburn vs. Baylor: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Tuesday’s game

Who is ready to watch the Tigers battle the Bears tonight?

The Auburn Tigers play No. 17 Baylor on Tuesday at Sanford Pavilion in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Auburn Tigers open the 2023-24 slate on Tuesday night and will have a tough challenge by facing the No. 17 Bears on a neutral court. Both teams finished the season by exiting the second round of the NCAA Tournament to teams who ultimately fell in the Sweet 16, Houston for Auburn, and Creighton for Baylor.

Baylor will provide a solid test for Auburn, as they have won a National Championship within the last three seasons. Baylor head coach Scott Drew was the head coach during the 2020-21 season which ended with a 28-2 record for the Bears. Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl understands that winning the glass battle will be key in defeating Baylor.

“It’ll be hard to duplicate Baylor’s athleticism. Historically, they’re one of the top 20 rebounding teams in the country and top 10 scoring teams in the country. They’ll fly to the boards. Our greatest challenge will be keeping them off the boards. Our half-court offensive execution has been pretty good for early in the season. We’ve shot the ball well. The quality of the opponent will step up in a big way.”

Auburn will be breaking in a relatively new starting lineup this season, as fixtures such as [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Allen Flanigan[/autotag] are no longer on the roster. [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag] headline the returning starters this season, while transfers such as [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag] step up to fill new starting roles.

Tuesday’s game will feature two injuries of note: Johni Broome and [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag]. Broome, who injured his shoulder in last Wednesday’s exhibition with Auburn Montgomery. Holloway, Auburn’s top 2023 signee and projected starting point guard heading into the season, injured his ankle in Auburn’s secret scrimmage with Furman. Pearl says that he feels confident that both players will be cleared to play on Tuesday night.

Below, you will find everything you need to know ahead of Auburn’s season-opener vs. No. 17 Baylor including a broadcast guide, an injury report, and projected starting lineups.

A look at Auburn Basketball’s 2023-24 roster

Get to know the 2023-24 Auburn Tigers before they begin the season!

The Auburn Tigers are set to officially begin the 2023-24 season on Tuesday, Nov. 7 against the No. 17 Baylor Bears at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

This season’s team features a healthy mix of veteran leadership, exciting transfers, and a five-star freshman. As head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] prepares to begin his 10th season as the Tigers’ leading man, he says that he is excited about the parity that his roster brings to the table.

“I’ve not been asked by one player,” Pearl said during his time on the podium at SEC Media Days regarding the set starting lineup. “We’ve got so much parity, so much competition in each position, I’m not sure they want to know, which I think is a good thing.”

This year’s veterans are [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag], [autotag]KD Johnson[/autotag], and [autotag]Chris Moore[/autotag], who have collectively logged a total of 255 games in an Auburn uniform.

The main attraction as far as returners go is center [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag]. Broome joined the Tigers roster last season after spending the first two seasons of his college career at Morehead State. He was great as advertised, as he scored 14.2 points and pulled down 8.4 rebounds per game. He also recorded 10 double-doubles last season and had a stretch of recording a double-double in four straight games to open SEC play. He is expected to replicate those stats this season, as he was named preseason All-SEC.

A plethora of bench options return to the roster this season as well. Broome will be complemented by [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag] at the five spot while [autotag]Lior Berman[/autotag] and [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] will provide relief to the Tigers’ backcourt.

This season’s roster features plenty of recognizable names, but there are also a few names to familiarize yourself with. Auburn landed two big names from the transfer portal, as well as a few junior college players to beef up its rotation.

Auburn added guard [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag], who was a first-team All-CUSA selection after scoring 20 points per game last season at FIU. [autotag]Chaney Johnson[/autotag], a 1,000-point scorer, also joins the roster after spending three seasons at Alabama-Huntsville. He dropped 15.3 points per game last season, en route to earning the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year award. JUCO transfers [autotag]Addarin Scott[/autotag] and [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag] are also expected to contribute heavily this season.

The most notable addition to the program, however, has to be freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag]. Holloway was the No. 16 overall prospect of the 2023 class and was the No. 3 point guard of the cycle. The Athletic recently listed him as one of the top freshmen to watch this season and he is expected to run the point for the Tigers, taking over for [autotag]Wendell Green Jr[/autotag].

Before the season starts, get to know the 2023-24 Auburn Tigers by checking out the full roster, plus their accomplishments as Auburn players, below.

Auburn promoting Steven Pearl to associate head coach

He is entering his 10th season with the program.

[autotag]Steven Pearl[/autotag] has received a promotion ahead of his 10th season on the Plains. Auburn announced on Tuesday that he was being named associate head coach.

“Steven has been an integral part of the success that we’ve had at Auburn from the beginning,” head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] said. “Many people may forget that he started as an assistant strength coach and worked his way up through our program. He has been able to recruit and coach at a very high level. His ability to communicate and teach our system to our players is second to none. He is truly one of the best assistant coaches in the country and has earned this promotion.”

With Steven on the bench, Auburn has won three SEC Championship titles and made four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the first Final Four in program history in 2019.

“I am so incredibly grateful for this opportunity and the trust so many people here at Auburn have put in me,” Steven said. “To BP, our administration, the board, our amazing coaching staff, our student-athletes, supporters of our program and the Auburn Family at large – thank you for this honor. I recognize how privileged I am to be able to come to work every day for the Auburn men’s basketball program, and I do not take that for granted.

“I couldn’t be more fired up about the direction and future of our program. I promise you I will stop at nothing to help the program bring home more championships to Auburn. We are just getting started. War Eagle!”

He has helped bring several talented transfers to Auburn, being the primary recruiter for [autotag]Walker Kessler[/autotag], [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] and [autotag]Denver Jones[/autotag].

Auburn is set to open the 2023-24 season on Nov. 7 against Baylor. The game will be a neutral-site matchup in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Sharife Cooper and Wendell Green Jr. were a part of the Cavaliers run to a summer league tournament championship.

The Cleveland Cavaliers took home the NBA Summer League championship on Monday by defeating the Houston Rockets, 99-78.

Among those on the championship roster are two former Tigers, [autotag]Sharife Cooper[/autotag] and [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag]

Three former Tigers to play in NBA 2k24 Summer League

jabari Smith, Sharife Cooper and Wendell Green Jr. are set to return to the court.

Three former Tigers are set to compete in the NBA 2K24 Summer League 2023. The event will take place on July 7-17 at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.

[autotag]Jabari Smith[/autotag] headlines the group after being drafted by the Houston Rockets with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He is joined by guards [autotag]Sharife Cooper[/autotag] and [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] who will both be playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Smith was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team after averaging 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for the Rockets. He will be looking to improve his efficiency after shooting 40.8% from the field and just 30.7% from deep last season.

Cooper is looking to show he is ready to compete in the NBA after making the All-NBA G League Second Team last season. He averaged 21.3 points, 6.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game for the Cleveland Charge last season.

Green went undrafted in the 2023 NBA draft and is looking to earn a contract.

Every game of the event will be on either an ESPN network (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPNews) or NBA TV. You can also stream them on the ESPN App or NBA App.

Here is a look at the schedule for both the Cavaliers and the Rockets.

Former Auburn guard signs NBA Summer League deal

Wendell Green Jr. will get a chance to make an NBA roster this summer.

A key member of Auburn’s basketball roster will get a chance to continue his career in the NBA.

After going undrafted in Thursday’s NBA draft, former Auburn guard [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] has connected with the Cleveland Cavaliers and will play for them during the NBA Summer League. A successful summer could end with a spot on Cleveland’s NBA G-League roster.

After Green declared his intention to turn pro, head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] took time to share gratitude for Green’s contributions to the program over the last two seasons.

“Wendell had a huge imprint on this team,” Pearl said. “Not many Auburn basketball teams have gone back-to-back to the NCAA Tournament and won first-round games, and Wendell’s teams did that — to his credit.”

Green’s Auburn career ends with an average of 12.9 points, 4.6 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game over 68 total games on the Plains. He made 39 starts in two seasons.

Wendell Green works out with NBA team

Auburn’s point guard is taking steps towards another chapter in his playing career.

After hearing the news of [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Cardwell[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] returning to Auburn basketball after testing the NBA draft waters, most Tiger fans began to wonder what would be next for point guard [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag]

On Friday, that question was answered.

Bryan Lewis of the New York Post tweeted that Green had worked out with the Houston Rockets on Friday. Green confirmed the report by posting a photo of a Rockets practice jersey with the caption “Blessed!”

The workout with the Rockets will seal Green’s career with Auburn. He ends his career on the Plains by averaging 12.9 points per contest with an average of 3.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

Now that Green has officially departed the program, expect true freshman [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] and sophomore [autotag]Tre Donaldson[/autotag] to control the point next season for the Tigers. Get a full rundown of Auburn’s projected rotation by clicking here.

Allen Flanigan withdraws from NBA draft consideration, announces transfer destination

The former Auburn forward will stay within the SEC as he pursues his masters degree.

A long-term member of Auburn basketball has found a new home after entering the transfer portal earlier this month.

Allen Flanigan, who spent four seasons at Auburn, has announced that he will forgo the NBA draft this year in favor of transferring to SEC rival Ole Miss for his fifth season of eligibility. The decision is anything but surprising, as Flanigan’s father, [autotag]Wes Flanigan[/autotag], accepted an assistant coach position at Ole Miss under new head coach, Chris Beard.

Flanigan played forward for Auburn from 2019-2023, where he appeared in 114 games and recorded 69 starts. His best season was his sophomore campaign where he averaged 14.1 points and 5.5 boards in 27 games. Last season, he scored 10.1 points and pulled down 5.0 rebounds in 34 games while making 19 starts.

Flanigan becomes the second Tiger to remove his name from NBA draft consideration, joining center [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] who announced that he would return to Auburn. Auburn is still awaiting the decision of guard [autotag]Wendell Green Jr.[/autotag] and forward [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag].
