Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 9

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 9 of the college football season?

Now there’s a new problem.

Very quickly we go from having too many teams likely to be bowl eligible to potentially not enough.

Texas A&M? That’s not a sure thing. BYU? Probably out unless something big happens. Michigan State? It’s going to take a few upsets to get there. Stanford? Probably not. Texas Tech isn’t a sure thing, and neither is Kansas – the loser of that matchup in a few weeks is likely out.

It’s not time to get into the APR thing among the 5-7 teams quite yet – if you don’t know, don’t ask; we’ll explain later if needed. For now there should be enough teams to fill the spots, so …

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 8

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 8 of the college football season?

The bowl projections are going to be wild and wacky as we go on with so many moving parts, so many possibilities, and so many teams looking for a home.

With a few big upsets – the Sun Belt and Mountain West went from not looking like they would have enough options to having way too many – there are more teams than ever with a reasonable path to get in.

There are a few shifts in the biggest bowls, and once again we think ESPN will crank up the extra game they put together last season – the Frisco Bowl Classic – to accommodate two of the teams available.

A few likely teams are left off for the moment – Stanford and UNLV might be shakier than it appears – but these can and will all change in a hurry.

Bowl Projections, College Football Playoff Predictions: Week 7

What are the bowl projections and the College Football Playoff calls after Week 7 of the college football season?

Oh did this just get even more interesting.

There will be plenty of upsets on the way, but until then the College Football Playoff picture remains … clear? It’s not what you think, and you’ll see what we’re talking about when we get there.

There are a slew of funky things happening with this week’s bowl projections, and they all have to do with remaining schedules.

Remember, a team needs to get to six wins to become bowl eligible. Michigan State might have just beaten Wisconsin, but it has to win three of its last five games against at Michigan, at Illinois, Rutgers, Indiana, at Penn State. It could happen, but the call is that it’ll lose three of those last five.

Wisconsin? It has been awful at times, but it has an easier finishing kick and should sneak in with three wins in the last five games.

Stanford?! Yeah, remember, it lost to four tough teams – USC, at Washington, at Oregon, Oregon State – but it can beat Arizona State, Washington State, Cal, and BYU to get to six. That might be a stretch, but that’s what the bowl projections are.

Even crazier might be the number of eligible teams. Yup, we’re making the call that ESPN will crank up the Frisco Bowl Classic like it did last year to get that extra TV game on.

So just as second half of the season gets going …

What have you shown us?

We’re halfway through the season and now we’ve got enough of a sample size to have a good feel about just how good and bad these teams are.

This week I’m staying away from the games that don’t feel right and I’m going with what we know. Oh no, trap games. You’re not fooling me like you did with Oklahoma getting a ton of points last week.

I’d love to go with Bama. Pick against the Tide ATS when everyone is assuming a layup – like last week against Texas A&M – and go with them when the world questions the greatness. However, I’m not 100% sure Tennessee can’t pull this off outright. I’m staying away.

I do know what Clemson is, and I love giving away just 3.5 to Florida State, but something just doesn’t feel right. FSU might have the right mix at home.

So with that in mind, these are all about what we’ve been able to see, what we know, and what – for the most part – we can prove.

In other words, it’s time to go with the annual bit.

You’re a good person. You pay your taxes, keep the toilet seat down, and tip generously. You do things the right way, and that’s why you deserve these 10 picks.

If they don’t work, it’s not our fault. Any wrong call here means something glitched in the matrix – like Nevada-Colorado State last week; more on that later – so with that, we start with the only point total pick of the week …

Click on each game for the preview

10. Arizona at Washington

POINT TOTAL 73
PICK Under

I shouldn’t have to tell you by now what to do with point total around 35, a spread of 50 or more, or a point total over the 70s.

As I’ll keep repeating, it’s really, really, really hard for two teams to get past 70. One team could bonk, there could be a slew of turnovers, a starting quarterback could get the sniffles, whatever.

The advice is to always take the under, enjoy the game, and if it goes over you’ve paid for the enjoyment of an entertaining shootout.

Start with this – Washington is back home. Just assume the team will find some semblance of a D again after a disastrous two-game road trip to UCLA and Arizona State. It’s very, very doubtful it’ll give up 40 to the Wildcats.

Arizona has only been rocked when the turnovers are flowing – three against Mississippi State, Cal, and Oregon – but Washington’s D is hit-or-miss on takeaways. The UW O should hit 40, the D should give up 20ish, and this should push to 70 and stall.

9. Auburn at Ole Miss

LINE Ole Miss -15
ATS PICK Ole Miss

This spot worked just find for the Georgia pick ATS over Auburn last week, so I’m riding with it. Again with the theme for this week …

What do we know? Auburn can’t score.

It hasn’t pushed past 17 in over a month, it’s putting too much stress on an otherwise solid defense, and things are starting to slip.

The Ole Miss offense might have struggled to put away Tulsa and Kentucky, but the running game has been wonderful and the defense has been stunningly okay.

Considering the Auburn run defense is buckling, and knowing the offense will have to go against type to push past 17, Ole Miss scoring 33 or more for the fourth time in five games should work.

Again, going with what we know so far …

8. Cal at Colorado

LINE Cal -15
ATS PICK Cal

I know. I KNOW. I’m with you. It’s scary to buy into Cal considering it struggled against UNLV, just got dropped by Washington State 28-9, and only has one great performance in a 49-31 win over Arizona.

We’ll get through this together.

What has Colorado shown you to suggest it can stay with anyone, much less a decent team like Cal? Granted, it had two weeks off to take a deep breath after firing head coach Karl Dorrell, but Cal is coming off a bye, too.

First, the Buffs have yet to come closer than 23 in any of its five games. Second, it’s dead last in the nation at stopping third downs, dead last against the run, and it’s the second-worst team in scoring D. Third, it’s going to take turnovers to pull this off, and Cal hasn’t given any up in the last three games and has just two mistakes all year.

Until this Colorado ATS train stops, we’ll stay on.

Like Auburn and Colorado, there’s another team that showed you what it appears to be …

[lawrence-related id=552745]

7. Miami at Virginia Tech

LINE Miami -7
ATS PICK Miami

Oh, I am well aware of Miami’s ability to underwhelm, and I don’t blame you one bit for either staying away or going the other direction here.

Over the last three weeks the Hurricanes have developed a brutal habit of playing up or down to its competition and then managing to lose. There’s one big reason why this time might be different.

Miami’s biggest issue is turnovers, and Virginia Tech doesn’t take the ball away.

At least the Canes have been close. They couldn’t stop screwing up against Middle Tennessee, and the O worked just fine in the loss to North Carolina.

The Hokie defense has been too awful over the last three games. The team didn’t cover the 14.5 against Pitt, got rocked by 31 against North Carolina, and got rolled over by West Virginia.

Here’s the advice. Hold your nose, go with Miami, forget you did, go do something else with your Saturday, and hope there’s a nice surprise waiting for you when you get home.

[lawrence-related id=552735]

6. Wisconsin at Michigan State

LINE Wisconsin -7.5
ATS PICK Wisconsin

There’s no reason to throw any parades for anyone who beat Northwestern 42-7, but after the brutal loss to Illinois and the firing of Paul Chryst, Wisconsin might have perked up a bit under Jim Leonhard.

But this is more about Michigan State.

The Spartans can throw – always be leery of what decent passing games with talent can do against Wisconsin – but the run defense has been awful over the last three games against Minnesota, Maryland, and Ohio State. Washington didn’t run on MSU partly because Michael Penix Jr. was too busy throwing for close to 400 yards.

1) Think about liking the under on the 42, but I’m not going with it only because I’m nervous the Badgers might come close to hitting that themselves if everything goes off the rails. 2) Michigan State hasn’t come closer than 14 against anyone in the last four games, and 3) it’s one of the worst teams in the country in time of possession.

You don’t control the ball against the Badgers, you’re never going to see your O on the field.

Warning. Outside of one game I’m going B-side deep cuts on these next picks, starting with …

The early college football lines and odds are out for Week 7. Where are the values?

5. Winners & Losers From Week 7

The One Really Big Thing
Most Overrated Thing
Most Underrated Thing
What It All Means, Week 7

Winner: SEC streak-enders

Kentucky beat Tennessee 17-12 back in 1984. That was the last time the Wildcats won in Knoxville and are now 3-33 overall in the series since then with a 34-7 win over the Vols.

While that was happening, South Carolina got by Auburn 30-22. The last time those two played was back in 2014, and the last time the Gamecocks beat the Tigers was … 1933, 16-14. USC had never beaten Auburn in Columbia.

Loser: The first half of SEC Mississippi games

Ole Miss ripped through Alabama two weeks ago. This last weekend? It was down 20-0 at halftime to Arkansas in the 33-21 loss. Mississippi State was down 14-0 to Texas A&M at halftime, and didn’t get its first offensive score – it came up with a pick six in the third – until the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs have now managed just seven points in the first halves of their last three games.

Winner: North Texas offense

In the 52-35 win over Middle Tennessee, QB Jason Bean threw for 181 yards and two scores and ran for a game-high 169 yards and three touchdowns. The team ripped through the Blue Raiders for 768 yards of total offense with 306 though the air and 462 on the ground.

Loser: Duke ball security

The mistakes just aren’t stopping. The Duke defense hasn’t been bad at taking the ball away, but the offense has turned it over 22 times in just six games. NC State came up with three interceptions in the 31-20 win, making this the fourth time in five games the Blue Devils turned it over three times or more.

Winner: Virginia Tech rushing offense

No. 2 in the nation behind Air Force – who only played one game – in rushing yards per game, the Virginia Tech ground attack is averaging 312 yards with 15 scores. In the 40-14 win over Boston College, the Hokies came up with their third 300-yard rushing day of the season with 250 yards and four scores.

Loser: Mississippi State rushing offense

Mike Leach offenses are at least supposed to be productive on the ground when they try to run. It didn’t help that star RB Kylin Hill was out against Texas A&M, but now the Bulldogs are dead last in the nation in rushing, averaging 1.54 yards per carry with just 114 yards. They averaging 28.5 yards per game on the ground – ULM is the second-worst team averaging 56.2 yards.

Winner: QB Dillon Gabriel, UCF and QB Brady White, Memphis

All Gabriel did against Memphis was throw for 601 yards and six touchdowns, and run for 49 yards and a score … and lose.

All White did was throw for 486 yards and six touchdowns, and run for 39 yards and a score … and win.

In all, UCF and Memphis combined for 1,501 yards of total offense in the 50-49 Tiger win.

Loser: UMass Minutemen

UMass wasn’t going to play this year, and then the independent decided to give it a go with a flexible schedule. It all started against Georgia Southern, and … 41-0. The Minutemen came up with 191 total yards – most of them late – couldn’t get a first down early on, and got hammered by the Eagles for 309 rushing yards.
