Auburn’s way-too-early basketball top 25 ranking and projected lineup

Where does Auburn land in ESPN’s latest top 25 early ranking?

The men’s basketball team ended their season much earlier than anticipated in the 2021-22 campaign. As we look to the next season for the Auburn Tigers, head coach [autotag]Bruce Pearl[/autotag] has reloaded his squad and is poised for another run to the Final Four.

It won’t come easy as the Tigers lose their dynamic frontcourt duo of Jabari Smith and Walker Kessler. The staff replaced them with a top transfer and a five-star signee. Sound familiar? It is the same blueprint as last season when they brought in Smith and Kessler.

As we look towards the next season, ESPN released their way-too-early top 25 rankings.

What ESPN Says…

After missing out on five-star forward Julian Phillips, who picked Tennessee over the Tigers, Auburn will have to hope Allen Flanigan returns to his 2020-21 form and is able to shoulder more of the scoring load on the wing. A projected first-round pick in the 2022 NBA draft last summer, Flanigan underwent a procedure to repair his right Achilles in early September and never found a rhythm once returning to the court. He averaged 14.3 points as a sophomore and was ranked No. 19 in ESPN’s early NBA draft rankings — but didn’t appear in a game until late December and averaged just 6.3 points in 22 games. His shooting numbers were down across the board. If Flanigan regains his old form, he could once again be a go-to guy for Bruce Pearl.

Auburn checks in at No. 12 on their way-too-early list (subscription required). Only the Kentucky Wildcats (No. 3 Overall) and the Arkansas Razorbacks (No. 8 Overall) are ahead of Bruce Pearl’s squad in the initial rankings from ESPN among SEC teams.

A look at their projected lineup for the Tigers in the 2022-23 men’s basketball season:

Spartans just outside top 10 in USA TODAY’s 2021-22 ‘Way-Too-Early’ rankings

Michigan State will once again be one of the top teams in the country next season, according to Scott Gleeson of USA TODAY.

Michigan State will once again be one of the top teams in the country next season, according to Scott Gleeson of USA TODAY.

Gleeson released his way-too-early top 25 rankings on Tuesday, and the Spartans were listed just outside the top 10 at No. 13. Here’s what Gleeson had to say about Michigan State and why he’s so high on the Spartans:

Northeastern transfer Tyson Walker, one of the best mid-major guards in the country, chose the Spartans over Kansas and Maryland. He averaged 18.8 points and 4.8 assists and was the CAA defensive player of the year. He’ll mesh with a returning roster of Joey Hauser and potentially leading scorer Aaron Henry if he holds off on the NBA. Five-star freshman Max Christie will add immediate scoring.

Michigan State is one of five Big Ten teams in Gleeson’s rankings. Along with the Spartans is Michigan (No. 4), Ohio State (No. 5), Purdue (No. 7) and Maryland (No. 11).

Michigan State men’s basketball ranked No. 10 in ESPN’s way-too-early 2020 rankings

The Spartans are among six ranked Big Ten teams

ESPN thinks Michigan State will have a top ten men’s basketball team for the 2020-2021 season.

The worldwide leader released its latest way-too-early rankings for the men’s college hoops season and the Spartans check in at No. 10. MSU’s blurb focuses a lot on personnel questions revolving around the program, which is fair. NBA decisions loom large for Xavier Tillman and Aaron Henry (and potential five-star recruit Karim Mane) and there is now word that Josh Langford is looking to return to MSU for another season. If those personnel matters break the right way, the Spartans could be prime for another preseason top five ranking and a boatload of expectations.

MSU is one of six Big Ten teams in the top 25 and the third-highest ranked behind Iowa (No. 5) and Wisconsin (No. 7). Ohio State (No. 22), Indiana (No. 23), and Rutgers (!!!) (No. 25) round out the conference.
