LSU set to host four-star in-state cornerback

Wardell Mack recently trimmed his offer list down to a final four that includes LSU, Texas, Florida and Florida State.

LSU’s football coaching staff is preparing for their annual “Bayou Splash” event that happens at the end of every July. At this event, the Tigers welcome in a bunch of highly touted recruits in hopes of swaying them to come to LSU.

One of the biggest names on the docket this time is four-star cornerback [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag].

Mack recently trimmed his offer list down to a final four that includes LSU, Texas, Florida and Florida State. The Tigers are a 79% favorite to land him according to On3, but Texas has received a Crystal Ball projection to land him per 247Sports.

He told On3 that he’s gotten a lot of love from the coaching staff and even said he was told the Tigers view him as a potential No. 7 jersey-holder one day.

Saying that Mack could wear the iconic No. 7 at LSU is a statement that holds a lot of weight. That is the kind of talent coach Kelly thinks he can bring to the Bayou.

4-star cornerback cuts top schools to 4, includes Florida

This blue-chipper is high on the Gators after a blistering month of June on the recruiting trail.

Florida football made the cut for one of the remaining blue-chip prep prospects still available in the 2024 recruiting cycle on Monday. Four-star cornerback Wardell Mack out of Lilburn (Georgia) Parkview final four schools was announced on Twitter via On3’s Hayes Fawcett and included the Florida Gators.

Billy Napier’s staff offered him a scholarship in early March and an April visit opened his eyes to what the Swamp had to offer. Subsequently, the rising high school senior made an official visit in the middle of June — right at the time that the program made a huge surge on the recruiting front. It appears he was very impressed with what he has seen so far.

Along with the Orange and Blue, the LSU Tigers, Texas Longhorns and Florida State Seminoles are also in contention for the 6-foot, 170-pound defensive back.

Mack is ranked No. 115 overall and No. 13 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 70 and 7, respectively.

Texas currently has three crystal ball predictions for his talents from 247Sports while it places second in On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, which gives LSU the upper hand with a 78.5% chance of landing him — vs. 18.9% for the Longhorns.

LSU makes top 4 for elite Louisiana cornerback Wardell Mack

Wardell Mack is ranked as the No. 2 player in the state of Louisiana by On3.

One of the top remaining targets on LSU’s 2024 recruiting board trimmed his list down to four on Monday.

Four-star Marrerro (La.) John Ehret cornerback [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag] included LSU among his list of finalists. The No. 2 prospect in the state of Louisiana and No. 71 recruit nationally per the On3 Industry Rankings, landing a player of Mack’s caliber would be a huge boost for coach Brian Kelly’s class.

The Tigers are joined by Florida, Florida State and Texas in his final four.

LSU is expecting to host Mack in December for an official visit. He’s already officially visited his other three finalists, and he was on campus in an unofficial capacity for the Tigers’ spring game.

Texas holds three Crystal Balls for Mack on 247Sports, but LSU is a heavy favorite on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine at 78.5%.

Regardless of who’s actually in the lead, Mack’s recruitment isn’t likely to end any time soon, and Kelly and his staff will have to continue to push into the fall.

LSU currently has 18 commits in a 2024 class that ranks 10th nationally.

Four-star DB Wardell Mack receives crystal ball predictions to Texas

The predictions pour in for Louisiana DB Wardell Mack to Texas.

If four-star defensive back Wardell Mack intends to choose a school other than Texas, he has national analysts fooled. Mack has received three crystal ball predictions in favor of the Longhorns.

On Tuesday, we learned that the elite Louisiana corner received crystal ball predictions from Florida State insider Chris Nee and LSU insider Sonny Shipp. A day earlier, Alabama insider Hank South issued a Texas prediction for the 5-foot-11, 170-pound cornerback.

Mack (No. 80 overall) joins fellow elite 2024 cornerbacks and On3 Top 100 players Kobe Black (No. 22 overall), Selman Bridges (No. 46) and Corian Gipson (No. 67) who trend hard to Texas.

Some made a big deal over No. 101 player Hunter Moddon’s decommitment, and certainly he’s a tremendous player. Now we know why Moddon might have reopened his recruitment with several higher ranked cornerbacks likely to choose Texas.

Texas cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph will enter Tashard Choice’s tier should he secure three commitments from the four above Top 100 players. Texas has every reason to pursue all of them.

We’ve mentioned that some believe the Longhorns can’t have all the cornerbacks they are pursuing. I would push back on that notion. Texas needs to look to lock down commitments from all four elite cornerbacks while they can and later find a place for all of them on the field. Teams should always take elite talent.

We’ll keep an eye on the four cornerbacks and their recruitments over the coming months.

Is LSU’s lack of top-200 recruits a problem?

Is LSU’s lack of elite recruiting at the top in 2024 a concern?

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is off to a good start in the class of 2024.

LSU’s already locked down several of Louisiana’s top recruits along with some national guys for a total of 17 commits. It’s a strong class that’s already addressed a few of LSU’s needs.

Right now, the top rated commit is tight end [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag]. He’s a four-star and consensus top 10 at his position. But he’s the only LSU commit to rank in the top 200 of the 247Sports composite rankings.

Georgia’s class has 14 of those guys. [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag], who has Florida trending up, has eight top 200 commits. Ohio State has nine and Michigan with six.

Despite having a top 10 class, LSU ranks 17th in average recruit rating.

As it stands right now, LSU’s 2024 class isn’t equipped to compete with the programs it hopes to compete with. It’s only June, so there’s no reason for any panic yet, but this is something to watch moving forward.

Some schools already have their two or three five-stars set. LSU doesn’t, which means the pressure is on to land the bigger fish down the stretch.

The good news is plenty of targets are still out there.

Most notably defensive linemen [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag]. He’s the best recruit in Louisiana and LSU needs defensive tackles in its next class after falling short in that area last year.

With the likely departures of [autotag]Maason Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Mekhi Wingo,[/autotag] that position needs a reload.

Another top 100 recruit LSU is well positioned with is corner [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag]. He’s another Louisiana guy, also at a position of need.

Outside of those two, On3’s Prediction Machine doesn’t favor LSU to land any other top 100 guys. LSU’s in the mix with running back [autotag]Caden Durham[/autotag] and EDGE [autotag]Colin Simmons[/autotag], but is by no measure the favorite with either.

There are plenty of guys in the 100-200 range that LSU’s after. The Tigers are sure to land a few there, but it still won’t put the top of LSU’s class up there with Georgia’s.

LSU’s 2024 class will be one of the nation’s best because of how well Kelly has recruited Louisiana this year. Almost every top player in the state will head to Baton Rouge.

But there needs to be some progress made with national five-stars if LSU wants to keep up with the playoff contenders every year. And that is the expectation at LSU.

This 4-star CB is headed back to the Swamp for another visit

Getting an out-of-state recruit on campus three times in seventh months can’t hurt, right?

After stopping by the University of Florida for an official visit last week, John Ehret High (Marrero, Louisiana) cornerback [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag] says he already has plans to return to the Swamp for the Grill in ‘Ville event on July 29, according to 247Sports.

It will be Mack’s third trip to the Swamp in four months. He first made his way to Gainesville in April and then again for the official visit on June 16. He also stopped by Florida State and Texas this month for official visits. Louisiana State is naturally in play for the in-state recruit as well.

Mack is going to narrow things down soon, but those are the unofficial top four right now. A decision is still probably a few months away, but he hopes to have things wrapped up by the first few weeks of his senior season.

A consensus four-star cornerback, Mack is highest ranked by On3 at No. 28 overall in the class and No. 4 among cornerbacks. 247Sports believes he’s outside the top 200, though, and only the 20th-best cornerback in the class.

Because of the extreme variance in rankings, Mack ends up at No. 79 overall on the On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major recruiting services. He’s also ranked No. 11 among corners and No. 3 among Louisiana recruits.

LSU trending for top in-state prospects in 2024 recruiting class

Brian Kelly could be on his way to locking down the state of Louisiana in 2024.

Fresh off a great class in 2023, LSU continues to build momentum in 2024.

Part of that is due to all the success LSU is having within its home state. The difference between LSU’s classes being good versus great often comes down to how many of Louisiana’s top prospects end up in Baton Rouge. Right now, everything is trending in the right direction on that front.

According to On3, LSU’s class is currently 11th in the country, but several of LSU’s top targets are yet to commit.

The most notable in-state target could be defensive lineman [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag]. He sits 20th overall in On3’s industry rankings. The site gives LSU an 82% chance of landing the star defensive tackle.

247Sports also has McKinley as a five-star and the top player in the state.

Other in-state names to know include LB [autotag]Tylen Singleton[/autotag] and CB [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag]. Both defenders are at positions of need for LSU and would be significant additions to the class.

NEW: 4-star TE Trey’Dez Green commits to LSU

The Tigers picked up their highest-rated commitment so far in the 2024 cycle on Wednesday.

LSU has the makings of a phenomenal tight end class in 2024.

On Wednesday, the Tigers secured the commitment of Jackson (La.) East Feliciana prospect [autotag]Trey’Dez Green[/autotag]. A four-star recruit who ranks as the No. 52 player nationally per On3, Green is the second-best prospect in the state of Louisiana in the cycle.

He chose the Tigers over Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Miami.

Listed at 6-foot-6.5 or 6-foot-5.5 depending on the recruiting service, Green is mainly considered a tight end though some sites list him as a receiver. He’s also a two-sport athlete and standout basketball prospect who plays power forward, and based on his announcement, it appears he intends to play both in college.

His addition gives LSU 14 commitments in a class that ranks in the top five nationally, per the 247Sports composite rankings.

With Green’s commitment, LSU holds pledges from three of the top 10 prospects in the state of Louisiana in 2024, and the Tigers hold Crystal Ball projections for two more in linebacker [autotag]Tylen Singleton[/autotag] and cornerbacks [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag] and [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag].
