Instant takeaways from Florida’s Thanksgiving win vs Wake Forest

Here’s a look at the instant takeaways from Florida’s Thanksgiving Day victory over the Wake Forest in the ESPN Events Invitational.

Florida basketball returned to action on Thanksgiving Day for the first of two games in the ESPN Events Invitational against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, who fell to the Gators in Kissimmee, 75-58.

This was the toughest matchup [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] and Co. have faced early on in the 2024-35 campaign and it showed at times, but the Orange and Blue simply had too much for Wake to handle. A strong g performance from both the front and backcourt cemented Florida’s seventh win in as many tries.

Every win is important — even early in the season against non-conference opponents — and the Gators will look to build on their Thursday afternoon performance. Here are the takeaways from the triumphant victory that represents payback for last year’s loss.

Gators came out flat in 1st 10 minutes

Florida opened scoring on the very first possession on an Alex Condon hook shot, but Wake Forest responded with a three to take an early lead. The two teams battled back and forth a bit before the Gators went ice cold from the field, going four-and-a-half minutes without a field goal (and just one free throw) and falling behind by as many as nine points.

The de facto second period went much better, with Golden’s gang closing the first half with a 21-8 run over 10:23 to post a 32-28 halftime lead. Will Richard dropped 10 efficient points to lead all scorers while Rueben Chinyelu led the Gators with five rebounds.

Six Gators made it onto the scoreboard that half, with the team posting a rough 35.5% (11-for-31) from the field overall and 27.3% (3-for-11) from behind the arc; they were also 63.8% (7-for-11) from the charity stripe.

Florida explodes out of halftime

The Gators scored the first 10 points of the second half as they continued their surge from the second 15-minute block, running out to an early 14-point lead that provided them some padding they would need.

The Deacons were not going down without a fight, shortening the lead to six before Florida pushed things back into double-digits thanks to an outburst by Alijah Martin. Wake Forest would get back to within seven points of Florida with just over five minutes remaining but would get no closer.

A six-point-play that included the ejection of Wake Forest’s head coach with under three minutes remaining effectively put the final nail in the coffin for the Demon Deacons. After that, it was clear that the Orange and Blue would prevail.

The Gators finished the game shooting 44.4% (23-for-58) from the field overall and 31.3% (8-for-27) from three-point range, along with an 87.5% (21-for-27) mark from the free-throw line.

Florida’s backcourt trio continues to impress

The three starting guards combined for 51 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and seven steals.

Clayton led all scorers with 21 points on 6-for-18 shooting from the field which includes a 4-for-13 effort from behind the arc and a 5-for-6 performance at the free-throw line. He added three assists, three steals and two rebounds in 35 minutes played.

Martin chipped in 16 on 7-for-13 shooting and 2-for-5 from three-point range while adding a pair of rebounds, assists and steals in 26 minutes of action. Richard also contributed 14 points on 4-for-7 shooting (1-for-3 from three-point range) and five free throws made in six attempts, while playing 31 minutes.

Next up for Florida

The Gators will play in the winner’s bracket of the ESPN Events Invitational on Friday, Nov. 29 against Witchita State Shockers. Tipoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Manny Diaz calls a potential sweep of in-state rivals ‘a big deal’ for Duke football

If the Duke Blue Devils can beat Wake Forest on Saturday, they’d be 3-0 against North Carolina teams, something not lost on Manny Diaz.

The Duke Blue Devils could cement their second nine-win season in three years on Saturday in Winston-Salem, but there’s something much more personal on the line for the team: a sweep of the state.

Under new head coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag], the Blue Devils erased a 20-point deficit against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Week 5 before handing NC State a 29-19 loss in Raleigh in Week 11. The two results gave Duke its first single-season sweep of those schools since 2013, and one more win over Wake Forest would let the Blue Devils stay undefeated within North Carolina.

“It has been discussed,” Diaz said on Monday. “The state championship is a goal of ours. Without divisions in the league and the way the schedule works, we’ll play those teams every year. We cannot pretend to go make a run at the ACC without making run at our state. That’s a big deal to us.”

“We are the only team that has a chance to win the state this year,” he continued. “Our guys are aware of that.”

The Demon Deacons have lost three straight games to fall to 4-7 on the season, and they’ve only won two of their seven ACC games to this point. However, in Miami on Saturday, Wake Forest remained within six points of the Hurricanes through three quarters, so Duke clearly cannot sleepwalk to another win.

Diaz also specified the difference between his team’s goals and their weekly preparation.

“We don’t really talk about goals,” Diaz said. “We talk about standards. Our goal wasn’t to win nine in the regular season. We didn’t set out as a goal to win 10. It was about having a standard. Usually, when you play to the standard, it’s funny how suddenly goals will become in reach.”

The Blue Devils kick off their final regular-season game at noon Eastern time on Saturday on ACC Network.

Broadcast information revealed for the Week 14 Duke football game at Wake Forest

The ACC revealed the kickoff time and broadcast information for Duke football’s regular-season finale against Wake Forest.

The Duke Blue Devils will play their final regular-season football game of the year on ACC Network, the conference announced on Monday.

Duke travels to Wake Forest in Week 14 for an in-state battle with the Demon Deacons, and the ACC slotted them for a noon kickoff in their Week 14 schedule.

The Demon Deacons lost to the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday, a second straight defeat that dropped them to 4-6 for the season. They’ve won just two of their six conference games in 2024, and those victories came against Stanford and NC State, two teams with a combined 4-9 record in ACC play.

Wake Forest has looked especially vulnerable on the defensive side of the ball. The Demon Deacons have given up more than 437 yards per game this season, the 16th-most among FBS teams. For comparison, Duke sits third in the ACC with 341.0 yards per contest.

The Blue Devils could earn bragging rights over the entire state of North Carolina with a win. Duke chased down North Carolina after falling behind by 20 points back in Week 5, and when paired with a Week 11 win over NC State, one more victory would give it a season sweep.

Projecting the rest of the Duke football season using ESPN FPI

Breaking down the latest record projection for Duke football using the Football Power Index produced by ESPN.

Even with three losses in their past four games, the Duke Blue Devils already did the hard part of reaching six wins for the 2024 college football season.

Now, with three games left ahead on the schedule, the only question for first-year head coach [autotag]Manny Diaz[/autotag] and his team is how many wins they can stack before the end of the regular season.

While the ESPN Football Power Index remains pretty pessimistic on the Blue Devils as a whole, keeping them outside of the top 60 teams in the country and the top 10 of the ACC despite their 6-3 record, Duke is still projected to finish with 7.6 wins. In fact, ESPN Analytics thinks there’s more than a 14% chance that Diaz wins his last three games for a 9-3 record in his debut season.

Here’s a breakdown of the final three games on the schedule and Duke’s chances to emerge with a win in the eyes of ESPN FPI.

NC State Wolfpack (Week 11)

Estimated Win Percentage: 54.4%

The Wolfpack have won each of their past two games to pull themselves to 5-4, and true freshman quarterback CJ Bailey has played a major role in the late-season reemergence. The first-year passer has thrown for 1,141 yards and nine touchdowns in his past four games, including a three-touchdown performance during last week’s 59-28 win over Stanford.

However, this two-game win streak has come against California and Stanford, two teams with a combined 1-9 conference record, and the Golden Bears came within a missed 28-yard field goal of winning anyway. Duke should be favored, even if the oddsmakers disagree.

Record: 7-3 (3-3)

Virginia Tech Hokies (Week 13)

Estimated Win Percentage: 38.7%

The Hokies fell to 5-4 on Saturday thanks to an overtime loss to Syracuse, but quarterback Kyron Drones and star running back Bhayshul Tuten both didn’t touch the ball during the defeat. Considering that the duo is responsible for 1,274 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground, even ignoring Drones’ passing production, and the Hokies still took a 6-2 Syracuse team to extra time on the road paints a good picture of why this Virginia Tech team is so scary.

Record: 7-4 (3-4)

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (Week 14)

Estimated Win Percentage: 66.3%

In a similar situation to the Wolfpack, Wake Forest beat Connecticut and Stanford to pull itself back to 4-4 for the season so far. However, the Demon Deacons beat the Cardinal by three points thanks to a late interception on the final drive. During Stanford’s six-game losing streak, the other five teams won by an average of 30.6 points. Wake Forest would need another conference win or two before this game to close this gap.

Record: 8-4 (4-4)

Staff score predictions for Clemson-Wake Forest Week 7 matchup

Our Clemson Wire staff score predictions for Clemson vs. Wake Forest in Week 7 matchup.

The 10th-ranked Clemson Tigers are on the road for the second straight week this Saturday as they head to Winston-Salem to take on the upset-minded Wake Forest Demon Deacons in ACC play.

Clemson (4-1 overall, 3-0 ACC) enters the game on a four-game winning streak after its 29-13 win over the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee last Saturday. In that game, the Tigers took a 17-0 first-quarter lead but were held to four Nolan Hauser field goals the rest of the night as they struggled to put points on the board in the red zone.

The defense had its most impressive effort of the season, albeit against a struggling Florida State offense with a backup quarterback in Brock Glenn. The Tigers held FSU to less than 200 yards until the Seminoles’ final possession with the game well in hand.

Dabo Swinney spoke this week about the need to focus on the opponent instead of outside noise. Last Saturday, the previously No. 1-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide lost 40-35 at Vanderbilt, and the Tennessee Volunteers (then No. 4) lost 19-14 at Arkansas.

Swinney said that “college football did (Clemson) a favor” with those upsets of top-ranked teams.”

“College football did us a favor because this is a week where, if you pay attention to what people say on the outside, they’re saying, ‘Well, this is a game we’re supposed to go win,'” Swinney said at his weekly Tuesday press conference. “This ain’t a game of ‘supposed to.’ This is a game of what you do. It’s a game of performance.

“That’s why I think we’ve been really consistent. We’ve created that windshield mentality for many, many years. I think we’re top four in the country in road wins since 2015 — maybe top three. And we’re the best in the country at home in the last 13 years.”

While experts and USA TODAY Sports’ six-member panel favor Clemson to beat Wake Forest, we’ve seen time and again this season that anything can happen in college football.

With the game fast approaching, here are our own Clemson Wire staff score predictions for Clemson vs. Wake Forest.

Alex Turri’s Prediction – Clemson 42, Wake Forest 10

No trap game here for the Tigers! Clemson is going to further establish their offensive dominance against the Demon Deacons who, even coming off a big win against NC State, are no match for this Clemson team. It’s weird to say after the way the season started, but I do have more worries about the Tigers’ defense in this one than the offense. The defense really needs to put it all together, and this is a great spot to do that.

Steve Holley’s Prediction – Clemson 41, Wake Forest 14

This is another week where Clemson is simply the better team. Can the Tigers capitalize on red-zone opportunities this week? While last week’s game against Florida State was never seriously in jeopardy after the first quarter, Swinney understandably wants the Tigers’ offense to finish drives. My guess is they do just that this week, while the defense has another strong showing.

Sam Hartman shares his first screenshot of EA Sports NCAA College Football 2025

How many could Hartman have scored if he used the Irish?

The early access for EA Sports College Football 2025 dropped on Monday, and many, including former Notre Dame football quarterback[autotag]Sam Hartman [/autotag] fired up their consoles.

The current Washington Commanders player shared on social media that he had to get some frustrations out, but not with his most recent former team, the Irish. Hartman routed Clemson using Wake Forest, scoring 105 while allowing 34 points.

It makes plenty of sense for him to target the Tigers, as he faced them four separate times in his collegiate career, each of them resulting in a loss for Hartman’s teams. His best shots came this past season and in 2022 when they battled into a second overtime.

Hopefully Hartman picks up the sticks with Notre Dame soon, and shares another moment of him blowing off some steam.

Clemson baseball all over the place in new Top 25 rankings

A look at where the Clemson Tigers rank in the new Baseball America Top 25 and D1Baseball rankings entering conference tournament play.

The Clemson Tigers are finding little in the way of a consensus among the Top 25 rankings as conference tournament play begins.

Clemson swept Boston College over the weekend to close out the regular season 40-13 overall and 20-10 in ACC play.

What did the series sweep of a last-place Eagles team do for the Tigers in the eyes of two prestigious college baseball publications who rank the Top 25 teams in the country each week?

Let’s just say there’s some discrepancy.

Clemson rose one spot to No. 3 in D1Baseball’s weekly Top 25 rankings, released Monday, May 20. Baseball America, which dropped the Tigers six spots to No. 10 last week following their three-game sweep at Wake Forest, kept coach Erik Bakich’s team at No. 10 in its rankings for the second consecutive week.

Only SEC regular-season co-champions Tennessee (46-10, 22-8) and Kentucky (39-12, 22-8) finished ahead of Clemson in D1Baseball’s poll.

While the Tigers are the highest-ranked ACC team by D1Baseball, Baseball America ranks Clemson behind three ACC teams: No. 3 North Carolina (41-12), No. 7 NC State (32-19), and No. 9 Wake Forest (36-19).

The Tigers went just 1-5 against the Wolfpack and Demon Deacons in head-to-head play this season. NC State and Wake Forest are the only two teams that won series against Clemson this season. The Tigers didn’t play North Carolina in the regular season.

Elsewhere in the rankings, No. 4 Texas A&M (44-11) and No. 5 Arkansas (43-12) rounded out D1Baseball’s top five. Oregon State (41-13), North Carolina, Oklahoma (34-18), East Carolina (40-13), and Florida State (39-14) were ranked Nos. 6-10, respectively.

Tennessee was also No. 1 atop Baseball America’s Top 25 with Kentucky at No. 2. No. 4 Texas A&M and No. 5 Arkansas rounded out Baseball America’s rankings as well.

NEXT UP

As the No. 2 seed at this week’s ACC Baseball Tournament in Charlotte, Clemson already knows the first two teams they’ll be facing at Truist Field. The Tigers will open the tournament against Miami on Thursday before facing Louisville Friday. The Tigers took two of three from both the Hurricanes and Cardinals in the regular season.

Every game of the 2024 ACC Tournament will be televised by ACC Network with the exception of Sunday’s championship game on ESPN2. Each game of the tournament will also air live on SiriusXM Channel 371 for subscribers.

Joe Lunardi speaks to ACC basketball coaches at spring meetings

Longtime bracket analyst Joe Lunardi reportedly talked to the ACC basketball coaches about how to improve their odds for at-large NCAA Tournament bids.

In the wake of snubs like an undefeated Florida State missing the College Football Playoff and Duke softball just earning the 10th seed in the NCAA Tournament, the ACC spring meetings had some ideas to earn more national favor.

During the conference’s spring meetings on Tuesday, longtime ESPN bracket analyst Joe Lunardi apparently spoke to the men’s basketball coaches for insight on how to earn more at-large bids. The Raleigh News & Observer’s Andrew Carter reported the meeting on social media.

Last year, the ACC earned four at-large bids into the NCAA Tournament. North Carolina, one of the four No. 1 seeds, maintained a steady grip as a top-five team all season, and 4-seed Duke and 6-seed Clemson both made the Elite Eight.

Outside of that, however, only conference tournament champion NC State made the first round. Virginia, who won the national title in 2019, earned a spot in the First Four play-in games.

Pittsburgh and Wake Forest both missed the tournament despite winning 22 and 21 games, respectively, and both sitting inside the top 35 in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency metric. They were the second- and third-highest teams left out.

Lunardi was apparently invited by the conference to speak with the coaches.
