Post Game Recap: Texas A&M defeats Oral Roberts 74-66 to reach 4-0 on the season

Behind Henry Coleman III’s third consecutive double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds), Texas A&M defeated Oral Roberts 74-66 on Friday night.

No. 13 Texas A&M hosted Oral Roberts on Friday night, looking to stay undefeated in the young season after two consecutive road victories over Ohio State and SMU. Despite another poor shooting night from deep (2-22 from 3-point), the Aggies defeated the Golden Eagles 74-66 to remain undefeated.

In three games this season, the Aggies have struggled mightily from beyond the arc, averaging a dismal 29% from three-point. While the defense and senior forward Henry Coleman III’s inside presence has masked their perimeter shooting struggles, these issues continued against the Golden Eagles.

Starting the game 0-8 from three, the elite guard duo of Wade Taylor IV and Tyrece Radford failed to find their shot early, as Coleman led the Aggies with 13 points off a perfect 5-5 from the field, including five rebounds, continuing his dominance in the paint while once again kept A&M in the game.

Oral Roberts, a team that plays inside out with an emphasis on perimeter shooting success, shot 50% from the field and 41.7% from three (5-12), yet the Aggies’ size continued to overwhelm their offensive rhythm late in the half, as A&M out-rebounded the visitors 22-10 (11 offensive rebounds) going into halftime.

Recording three early steals, Wade Taylor led the momentum push with just a few minutes remaining, leading to a mini offensive surge coupled with efficiency (10-13 FT) from the charity stripe ( to take a semi-comfortable 38-31 halftime lead.

Texas A&M’s size differential continued to wreak havoc on the boards, providing the offense multiple possessions after nearly every miss. Still, none of that mattered as the Golden Eagles continued to shoot their way back into the game, going on a mini 7-4 run to get within four points, while the Aggies stood 0-13 from three before Tyrece Radford finally nailed a corner three from deep to stop the bleeding.

However, Radford’s three woke up the Aggie offense, their largest lead at 54-41 with 11 minutes to play. Still, outside of a quick five-point spurt, A&M’s offense continued to falter down the stretch, providing Oral Roberts plenty of opportunities to shoot their way back into the game.

Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams stuck to his game plan and went back to emphasizing Coleman in the low post, as the senior recorded his third straight double-double, staying perfect from the field with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while he and guard Hayden Hefner (6 points, five rebounds, three assists) the Aggies back to a 62-53 lead with just over three minutes left in regulation.

Still hanging around, Oral Roberts stayed on A&M’s heels due to continued poor shooting, as the Aggie’s once substantial lead dwindled to a 66-60 advantage at the one-minute mark, but as we’ve witnessed all season, this team has been organized and highly efficient in the final seconds, as Radford, emulating Troy Aikman, threw a perfect inbound pass to Wade Taylor for an easy layup to take a 68-60 advantage.

Credit to Golden Eagles guard Issac McBride for keeping Oral Roberts within range late, scoring a game-high 27 points, but in the end, the foul game ensued, and four free throws from Henry Coleman and reserve forward Andersson Garcia sealed the close victory for the A&M squad that is now 4-0 on the season before heading next week’s ESPN Invitational in an NCAA Tournament rematch vs. Penn State.

GAME NOTES:

  • Free throw shooting continued to push the Aggie forward (20-24, 83.3%)
  • Perimeter shooting has continued to hinder the offense from reaching its full potential (2-22, 9.1%)

Below are the Aggie critical contributors from the game:

Wade Taylor IV: 16 points / 4 assists / 4 rebounds

Henry Coleman III: 19 points (7-7 FG) / 10 rebounds

Tyrece Radford:  11 points / 4 assists / 5 rebounds

Henry Coleman:  13 points / 2 assists / 15 rebounds

Texas A&M will head to Orlando, Florida, for the ESPN Invitational next Thursday in a rematch vs. Penn State. The game will air on ESPN at 11:00 a.m. CT.

Henry Coleman III is off to a hot start amid Texas A&M’s undefeated season

Texas A&M Basketball is off to a 3-0 start, and senior forward Henry Coleman III’s consistent play is a big reason why

Basketball is a team sport through and through, as one player, as even the greats like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron James needed a collection of dependable teammates throughout their careers to soar towards new heights as their careers progressed.

For Texas A&M, the Aggies are undefeated at the start of the 2023-2024 season under fifth-year head coach Buzz Williams, as his trio of veteran stars, led by Preseason SEC Player of the Year and junior guard Wade Taylor IV (17.3 PPG) has already dazzled in multiple outings, but has struggled to find his shot consistently thus far.

However, senior guard Tyrece Radford (17.0 PPG) and senior forward Henry Coleman III (11.3 PPG, 11.3 REB) have taken over the scoring duties. At the same time, Coleman has almost singlehandedly kept the Aggies from falling behind in every game, including Tuesday’s road win vs. SMU. While Radford led the team with 21 points after a strong first half, Coleman’s production in the paint, defense, and rebounding stole the show, recording 13 points, 15 rebounds, and one steal, and was perfect from the charity stripe.

Coleman’s late-game impact was most notable with just over eight minutes left in the second half against the Mustangs, as the Aggies led 54-50 after SMU scored the last three points, Texas A&M guard Jace Carter missed his shot, leading to a Coleman offensive rebound, muscling his way towards the basket for a layup, and the foul, which spurred an 11-2 Aggie run to close out the game essentially.

Again, this was just the latest impressive outing from Coleman, who recorded his first double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds) in last week’s big road win over Ohio State, becoming the most dependable big man. At the same time, fellow senior forward Julius Marble continues to go through his “University process.”

As long as the Aggies continue to struggle in perimeter shooting (29.6%), Henry Coleman is shooing a team-high 60% from the field and 90% from the stripe—time to keep feeding the big man inside.

Texas A&M will be back in Reed Arena to take on Oral Roberts on Friday, Nov. 17. The game will air on ESPN+ and SEC+.

Wade Taylor IV named to pre-season All-American team

Junior guard Wade Taylor IV named to The Sporting News All-American Second Team.

The Texas A&M guard Wade Taylor IV has started his junior campaign strong and is growing more into a leader every game. A few days ago, it was announced that the junior guard was named to The Sporting News All-American Second Team.

Below, they gave their unbiased opinion on Taylor’s game and some areas he might need to improve to jump to the first team.

Why he’s here: His stats from a year ago say, no, he’s not likely to be among the top 10 players in college basketball this season, that he’s just a smidge outside that. His talent and his tape say those numbers don’t reflect all he’s capable of doing – and suggest this year’s statistics might. Staying in front of him is an absolute chore, and that’s whether or not he gets the help of a screen. His floater is lethal. Taylor needs to become more consistent as a shooter, not just to demonstrate his value as an elite player but to push the Aggies to the level they, too, are capable of reaching.

Wade Taylor IV finished last season at 16.5 points per game and led the SEC in free throws made with 168 at 87.5%.  He was named to the following 2023 teams.

  • SEC All-Tournament Team
  • All-SEC First Team (AP and Coaches)
  • Third-Team All-American (Stadium.com)
  • NABC Second-Team All-District 20

The season is just getting started, and we hope to see Talyor lead the Aggies to a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

Texas A&M Basketball faces another tough road test vs. SMU

On Tuesday night, 13th-ranked Texas A&M will travel to Dallas to take on an undefeated SMU team looking to play spoiler.

Credit to Texas A&M Basketball head coach Buzz Williams for not just devising one of the toughest non-conference schedules this season but trusting that his veteran team is up for the challenge after reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nearly five seasons last March.

Ranked 13th in the AP Poll and sitting at 2-0 on the season, including their recent 73-66 win over Ohio State on the road last Friday, the Aggies have solidified their scoring trio. At the same time, senior forward Julius Marble continues to work through his “University process” while his return status remains unknown, leading to Wade Taylor IV (21 points), Tyrece Radford (21 points), and Henry Coleman III (20 points) scoring 85% of the A&M’s scoring against the Buckeyes.

On Tuesday, Texas A&M will take on undefeated SMU (3-0) for the second consecutive road game in the young season. While the Mustangs present an obvious challenge as the hosts, junior guard Zhuuric Phelps (13.7 PPG) and senior guard Chuck Harris (12.0 PPG) are as tough a backcourt duo as you’ll find in the country, but if A&M’s consistent defense, holding opponents to 56 points per contest so far this season holds, expect enough scoring from the likes of Taylor, Radford, and Coleman to keep the Aggies in good position throughout the night.

Other Players to watch: Texas A&M guard Hayden Hefner (11.5 PPG) was quiet after his 19-point eruption against Texas A&M Commerce, netting just four points against Ohio State, but he has a chance to break out on any given night if the shots start falling. Already ascending in his second season on the defensive end, sophomore forward Solomon Washington constantly plays with non-stop energy. At the same time, his projection as a threat in the post may come as soon as SEC play.

Texas A&M will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 against SMU in Dallas, Texas at Moody Coliseum. The game is available to stream on ESPN+. The Aggies are currently a -5.5 favorite.

Best Photos: Texas A&M moves to 2-0 after beating Ohio State 73-66 on the road

Buzz Williams and the Aggies move to 2-0 after beating the Buckeyes on the road

No. 15 Texas A&M (2-0) defeated Ohio State (1-1) in a back-and-forth battle with over 15 lead changes before the Aggies closed the game out late for a 73-66 victory. Under fifth-year head coach Buzz Williams, the Aggies hadn’t earned a Quad-1 win in non-conference play until tonight, as a Big 10 road win on any given year deserves recognition come Tournament time.

When making the schedule, these are the types of non-conference games Buzz Williams wanted to get. Tough games against traditional basketball powerhouses early in the season will undoubtedly pay dividends when SEC Play starts.

Below are the Aggie critical contributors from the game:

Wade Taylor IV: 21 points / 4 assists / 2 rebounds

Tyrece Radford: 21 points / 5 rebounds

Henry Coleman: 20 points / 2 assists / 11 rebounds

Andersson Garica: 4 points / 13 rebounds

Texas A&M will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 against SMU in Dallas, Texas at Moody Coliseum.

Was it their best game? No, but this Texas A&M Basketball team showed pure resilience after defeating Ohio State 73-66

It wasn’t the Aggies’ best performance, but they got the job done in a challenging road environment after defeating Ohio State 73-66.

In any competition, winning is all that matters, no matter how ugly, and for the 15th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies (2-0) and head fifth-year head coach Buzz Williams, a Friday night road test vs. Ohio State in only their second game of the season would tell us even more about this team ahead of one of the most demanding non-conference schedules in all of college basketball.

As we’ve witnessed from several top-ranked programs early in the year, the Aggies struggled early from the floor, shooting a dismal 38.7, including 27.3 from three and 63.6 from the stripe. At the same time, their ill-timed overconfidence from the perimeter was actually a positive sign moving forward, as the shots will eventually fall at a higher rate than we saw last season before SEC play.

Credit to Ohio State for focusing on the Aggies’ talented backcourt, as preseason SEC Player of the Year and junior guard Wade Taylor IV couldn’t buy a shot in the first half, held to 1-10 from the floor.

However, Taylor’s early struggles quickly defined how the Aggies would respond the rest of the way; relying on Tyrece Radford (11 points) and Henry Coleman (10 points, nine rebounds), the senior guard/forward duo kept the Buckeyes at bay, taking a 34-32 lead into halftime.

Knowing that Radford and Coleman could be relied on to steady the ship when called upon, Taylor’s 14-point second-half surge after just seven points in the first half came in clutch moments when the Buckeyes seemed to find their stroke.

Taylor hit several critical shots late in the game, including his left-handed layup off the glass to extend the Aggie lead to 63-57 with just three minutes remaining. Still, even though many will note Taylor’s late improvement to seal the win as the lone catalyst, it was the effort from Coleman and senior bench forward Andersson Garcia, as both combined for 26 of the Aggies’ 45 boards on the night, as Garcia grabbed seven offensive rebounds to keep possessions alive, providing a noticeable spark to the offense, working off his relentless energy.

In a comically ironic finish, Taylor (21 points), Coleman (20 points), and Radford (21 points) produced 84% of the team’s 73 points, living up to preseason expectations as the veteran leaders among a deep roster filled with potential.

With the win, the program under Buzz Williams has earned what will likely end up being their first non-conference Quad 1 win, which, as we all know, annually dictates a team’s entry/standing in the NCAA Tournament. With much more to prove from a consistency standpoint, Friday’s performance was built on internal trust and experience after several adversity-filled seasons had created a thick skin for every Aggie player who stepped on the court.

Texas A&M will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 against SMU in Dallas, Texas at Moody Coliseum.
