Lady Vols salvage split at Alabama

Recapping UT’s volleyball win at Alabama Saturday.

The University of Tennessee snapped its two-match losing streak and salvaged a split against Alabama Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa.

The Lady Vols, who dropped a four-set match to the Crimson Tide, returned the favor Saturday by prevailing in a four-setter at Foster Auditorium.

Tennessee picked up a 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20 victory over Alabama (7-13, 7-13 SEC).

Lily Felts, a Knoxville product and Berean Christian School graduate, finished the match with 11 kills, 21 digs and two assists, while Morgahn Fingall led the hitting attack for the Lady Vols (10-8, 10-8).

Fingall had 16 kills, five blocks and a service ace for Tennessee, which returns home to face LSU in a two-match series at Thompson-Boling Arena Wednesday and Thursday.

Both matches begin at 2 p.m. EDT.

Natalie Hayward had 42 assists and eight digs in the series finale against the Crimson Tide, while Madison Bryant finished with 21 digs and four assists.

Crimson Tide downs Lady Vols in four sets

Recapping UT’s loss to Alabama in volleyball Friday.

Tennessee dropped its second consecutive volleyball match when it fell to Alabama in four sets Friday night in Tuscaloosa.

The Lady Vols captured the first set, only to see the Crimson Tide storm back to claim a 16-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 victory.

It was Tennessee’s second straight loss after the Lady Vols fell to Arkansas Sunday and had to settle for a split in Fayetteville.

Tennessee (9-8, 9-8 SEC) and the Crimson Tide (7-12, 7-12 SEC) will conclude their series today at 3 p.m. EDT.

In Friday’s match, Morgahn Fingall had 11 kills, four blocks and one service ace, while Lily Felts finished with 10 kills and served up an ace.

Danielle Mahaffey had nine kills.

Natalie Hayward finished the match with 31 assists and nine digs. Madison Bryant had 18 digs and seven assists.

Arkansas downs Lady Vols in four sets

Recapping UT’s four-set loss to Razorbacks Sunday.

Tennessee had to settle for a weekend split against Arkansas in Fayetteville.

The Lady Vols, who claimed a four-set Southeastern Conference match against the Razorbacks Saturday, dropped a 25-21, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17 decision at Barnhill Arena Sunday afternoon.

Lily Felts had 13 kills and six digs for Tennessee (9-7, 9-7 SEC) in the loss that snapped the Lady Vols three-match winning streak.

Jasmine Brooks added 12 kills, while Danielle Mahaffey finished with nine kills, six blocks and one assist.

Ava Bell was Tennessee’s leading blocker as she finished with seven stuffs. Morgahn Bell tallied five blocks in the match.

Natalie Hayward dished out 42 assists and came up with seven digs, while Madison Bryant had 16 digs and two assists against the Razorbacks (12-8, 12-8).

Lily Felts leads Lady Vols past Arkansas

Recapping UT’s volleyball victory at Arkansas Saturday.

After dropping the first set, Tennessee stormed back to claim an 18-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 Southeastern Conference victory at Arkansas Saturday.

The victory was Tennessee’s third consecutive win (9-6, 9-6 SEC). Tennessee will go for the series sweep at Barnhill Arena Sunday at 3 p.m. EDT.

In the opener against the Razorbacks (11-8, 11-8 SEC), Lily Felts and Morgahn Fingall each had 16 kills, while Jasmine Brooks chipped in with 14 kills and three blocks.

Felts, a junior from Knoxville and Berean Christian graduate, also finished the match with 12 digs, two blocks and two assists.

Fingall also posted a pair of service aces.

Natalie Hayward and Madison Bryant came up big for the Lady Vols, both offensively and defensively.

Hayward dished out 47 assists and had 11 digs, while also serving up a pair of aces. Bryant had 26 digs and nine assists in the match.

Madison Bryant named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

UT volleyball player Madison Bryant named SEC Defensive Player of the Week.

Tennessee volleyball player Madison Bryant has been named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Bryant, a sophomore from Anderson, South Carolina, had a combined 33 digs in the Lady Vols’ two-match SEC series sweep against Mississippi State in Knoxville March 5-6.

She had 18 digs for Tennessee in the opener against the Bulldogs Friday at Thompson-Boling Arena in the Lady Vols’ four-set victory.

Bryant followed up that performance with 15 digs when UT swept the Bulldogs in straight sets Saturday. She also posted a career-high three service aces Saturday and finished the two-game series with nine assists.

The Lady Vols (8-6,8-6 SEC) will return to action Saturday when they travel to face Arkansas. The two teams will also play Sunday.

Saturday’s match is slated for 3 p.m. EST, while Sunday’s match will get underway at 3 p.m. EDT.

Some sports fared better than others, but we all know the Florida Gators are winners. Here’s a look at the weekend results from UF sports.

Welcome back from a weekend full of Florida Gators sports — more than you can veritably share a stick at, for sure. While a few teams swept the competition the past few days, a couple of others were not so successful. Nonetheless, every student-athlete that competes in the Orange and Blue brings pride to the Gator Nation as there is more to life than just who wins a game.

There is a ton to cover, including today’s upcoming events, so without further ado let us dive into UF athletics.

Lady Vols defeat Mississippi State in volleyball

Recapping Tennessee’s victory over the Bulldogs Friday night.

The University of Tennessee volleyball team was victorious Friday night, notching a four-set victory over Mississippi State.

The Lady Vols received a career-high 19 kills from Morgahn Fingall as they downed the Bulldogs, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-14, at Thompson-Boling Arena.

It was Fingall’s fifth consecutive match posting double figures in the kills column. She also had six digs and two blocks for Tennessee (7-6, 7-6 SEC).

Danielle Mahaffey chipped in with nine kills and 10 total blocks, including nine solo stuffs, against the Bulldogs (4-11, 4-11).

Knoxville product and Berean Christian School graduate Lily Felts had her sixth consecutive match with double-digit kills as she had 10 to go along with 15 digs.

Setter Natalie Hayward dished out 39 assists and put down seven kills in the match.

Natalie Hayward earns SEC volleyball honors

UT junior setter Natalie Hayward named SEC Setter and Player of the Week.

Tennessee volleyball player Natalie Hayward has picked up a pair of Southeastern Conference awards.

Hayward, a 5-foot-11 junior, played a key role in the Lady Vols’ weekend sweep against No. 16 Missouri at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Her effort earned Southeastern Conference Setter and Player of the Week.

Hayward, a native of Bothell, Washington and graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School, had 86 assists in two matches against the Tigers (8-4, 8-4 SEC).

She averaged 10.75 assists per set over the weekend for the Lady Vols.

Hayward dished out a career-high 54 assists in Friday night’s thrilling comeback 5-set victory. She also finished the lid lifter for the spring season with 14 digs and three kills.

In Saturday’s sweep of the Tigers, Hayward had 32 assists, 12 digs and two kills for the Lady Vols (5-4, 5-4).

Hayward has 339 digs.

Gators News: Women’s golf and basketball results plus three award-winning players

Florida sports: a pair of teams to review from Monday, another pair to preview for tonight, and a third pair of squads earning SEC honors. 

Florida sports are chugging along on  this Tuesday, with a pair of teams to review from last night, another pair to preview for today, and a third pair of squads — three student-athletes, to be exact — earning weekly Southeastern Conference honors. And believe it or not, today is a slow day after which things are going to get busy in Gainesville.

“How busy?” you might ask. Well, tomorrow and Thursday will see three athletic programs in action, and then Friday kicks the weekend off with 10 teams engaging in competition. But for now, there is plenty of ground to cover.

Straight-set win nets series sweep for Lady Vols volleyball

Recapping Tennessee volleyball’s win over Missouri Saturday.

The University of Tennessee volleyball team clinched a sweep in its first Southeastern Conference matches of the spring season Saturday night.

The Lady Vols took down No. 16 Missouri in straight sets, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22 at Thompson-Boling Arena.

In contrast, the spring lid lifter and series opener in Knoxville Friday night went five sets with the Lady Vols (6-4, 6-4 SEC) prevailing over the Tigers (8-5, 8-5) in comeback fashion.

The victory was Tennessee’s fourth consecutive win dating back to the fall season. It was also the third time this season that the Lady Vols have knocked off a ranked opponent.

The Lady Vols overcame a 16-11 deficit in the opening set before closing the first game with a 14-6 run. UT won eight of the final 10 points of the set.

Morgahn Fingall was a factor for Tennessee against Missouri. She had 13 kills Friday night and recorded a career-high 16 kills on Saturday.

Junior and Berean Christian School graduate Lily Felts had nine kills, nine digs and served up one ace Saturday, while hitting a team-high .450.

Danielle Mahaffey finished the match with five kills, five blocks and one ace.
