Virginia Tech at Duke picks and predictions

Prediction

Duke 76, Virginia Tech 67

Moneyline

AVOID.

Duke (-310) has won 3 in a row overall and is 14-0 at home, but the odds are too pricey to play it to win outright. Virginia Tech (+250) hasn’t won in Durham since 2007, so it’s a fade, too.

Against the spread

BET DUKE -7.5 (-105).

While it might feel like Virginia Tech and Duke play close games, they haven’t been close in Durham. The Hokies have won 2 straight matchups in the series, but they have lost 6 straight in North Carolina by at least double digits.

Virginia Tech’s strength is an efficient offense which plays into Duke’s strength as well. The Hokies are also just 1-8 ATS on the road this season as well.

Considering the Hokies’ road struggles and overall struggles in Durham, back DUKE -7.5 (-105).

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 141.5 (-115).

Duke is 2-2 O/U in its last 4 games and is 7-6-1 O/U at home.

Virginia Tech has gone Over in 8 of its last 9 games and has scored at least 70 points in each of those, including a 74-point effort on Virginia, one of the best defensive teams in the nation.

The Hokies average 74.5 points per game and are 2-0 O/U as an underdog. These teams are a combined 20-13-1 O/U in conference play as well. Back the OVER 141.5 (-115).

Virginia Tech at Duke odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Virginia Tech at Duke odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Virginia Tech Hokies (8-4, 0-1 ACC) and No. 2 Duke Blue Devils (10-1, 0-0) meet Wednesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Virginia Tech vs. Duke odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Hokies have alternated wins and losses in each of their last six games, while also alternating covers and non-covers during that span. Virginia Tech punished St. Bonaventure 86-49 on a neutral floor Friday as the Over connected.

The Blue Devils lost in Columbus to Ohio State Nov. 30, but Duke has bounced back with victories over South Carolina State, Appalachian State and Elon to climb the rankings. But have they really been tested?

Virginia Tech at Duke odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Duke 76, Virginia Tech 65

Money line

There is absolutely no value betting Duke (-450), which will cost you four and a half times your potential return.

PASS, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

DUKE -8.5 (-122) is the play, even though Virginia Tech looked awfully strong last time out against a good St. Bonaventure team.

Facing Duke is quite a step up from the Bonnies, however, and the Hokies won’t have any answers for the likes of Paolo Banchero or Wendell Moore Jr. in the frontcourt.

The Blue Devils are also 3-0-1 ATS in their last four at home, and the home team has covered eight of the last 10 in this series. The Hokies might be the play if this were a double-digit spread,  but this is actually a very reasonable, low number. We’ll get a double-digit win for the home side.

Over/Under

OVER 138.5 (-115) is the slight lean here but only with a small-unit play. The Over has cashed in four of the past six games for the Blue Devils, and the Over is 21-9-2 in the past 32 for the Dukies in front of the Cameron Crazies.
