Upsets highlight ACC football early kickoff games in Week 6

It’s looking more and more like it’s Clemson vs. Miami for the ACC after Louisville fell to SMU on Saturday.

This story was updated to add new information.

It’s looking more and more like a two-team race in the ACC between the Clemson Tigers and Miami Hurricanes.

The 22nd-ranked Louisville Cardinals, the league’s only other ranked team in Week 6, fell at home to the SMU Mustangs, 34-27, Saturday at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium.

SMU (5-1) started hot and got out to a 24-13 lead at halftime. Louisville came to life in the second half but a critical stop by the Mustangs’ defense on 4th and 1 from the SMU 19-yard line early in the fourth quarter allowed SMU to take over on downs.

The Mustangs then drove 89 yards on 11 plays, highlighted by a 19-yard run by Brashard Smith that included a fumble that was initially awarded to Louisville but which was overturned on video review. Four plays later, LJ Johnson Jr. carried it into the end-zone from a yard out for a 34-27 SMU lead with 6:39 to play.

The ACC has some strong teams heading into the 2024 season, according to ESPN’s SP+.

The 2024 college football season is months away, but we all know that football remains on the mind throughout the offseason.

Early rankings have been released all over the place, with ESPN’s Bill Connelly recently releasing the preseason ESPN SP+ rankings ($$$) for the 2024 season. These SP+ rankings consider multiple key factors regarding a football team, including returning production, recent recruiting, and recent history. A strong model; here is a bit more of what Connelly had to say about the rankings.

“It’s a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football, not a résumé ranking. Along those same lines, these projections aren’t intended to be a guess at what the AP Top 25 will look like at the end of the season. These are simply early offseason power rankings based on the information we have been able to gather to date.”

Straightforward and to the point, these are power rankings based on what we know right now. So, how do Clemson and the rest of the ACC stack up in the first SP+ rankings for 2024? Check it out below.

Former Clemson tight end announces transfer destination

Former Clemson tight end Sage Ennis is staying in the ACC.

A former Clemson tight end has announced his new home and it is in the ACC with a familiar face to the program.

Sage Ennis took to social media to announce that he is transferring to Virginia. He joins former Clemson defensive coordinator and current Cavaliers head coach Tony Elliott’s squad.

Originally committed to Florida A&M, Ennis is making a change after staff changes at A&M. Former Florida A&M head coach and former Tiger Willie Simmons has moved on to be running backs coach at Duke, leading to Ennis searching for a new team.

Playing in 41 games for the Tigers, Ennis totaled six catches for 77 yards, but stats don’t truly tell his impact. Ennis is an excellent blocker, putting together some great tape as a blocking tight end. His impact was felt in the Clemson running game. A torn ACL ended his season early after earning solid reps in the Tigers’ offense.

A high school football game in Virginia ended 104-0. That’s right…104-0

Phoebus High School certainly ran wild on Friday night.

We’re hoping that the mascot for Phoebus High School doesn’t have to do push-ups following every point scored. If so, they better serve protein drinks and Red Bulls at the snack shop.

That will be one tired mascot.

That’s because Phoebus (Hampton, Virginia) beat Jamestown (Williamsburg, Virginia) by a 104-0 score line. Did the scoreboard actually have enough room for triple-digit points?

And if the Oregon Duck’s mascot was exhausted earlier this year during a romp of Portland State after all those push-ups, imagine how the Phoebus Phantom must be feeling after Friday night?

The highlight tape from Phoebus High School on Friday night might run out of film.

It is another dominating performance from Phoebus as they have shut out their opponent in six of their last seven games. They also have scored 122 points in their previous three games.

Now they’ve scored 226 points in their last four games.

Imagine that, going 226-2 in their last four games (yes, they gave up a safety in a late October game).

Jamestown had a difficult season and is now 1-10. They lost their previous game 84-0 at Warhill (Williamsburg, Virginia).

With the win, Phoebus improves to 11-0.
