The fifth-seeded Wildcats and 13th-seeded Mean Green will tip off at 8:45 p.m. ET at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Villanova defeated Winthrop 73-63 in the first round Friday. Sophomore F Jeremiah Robinson-Earl scored 22 points and has 48 points in his last two games. The Wildcats had been on a downward trend since suffering some late-season injuries, dropping three of four games before the NCAA Tournament.

Winthrop ran through the Big South en route to its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2017. While the Eagles had tremendous success in the regular season, that hasn’t always been the case in the Big Dance. It’s a little risky since the Wildcats are 0-2 SU/ATS since Gillespie went down, and they’re facing a Winthrop side that has lost just once this season. But who have the Eagles really played in the Big South? They played just one NCAA Tournament team in UNC Greensboro, and that was in the opener Dec. 1 on a neutral floor. The Eagles beat the Spartans 75-67 as six-point underdogs, but again, their strength of schedule is a little suspect.

Against the spread (ATS)

WINTHROP +7 (-110) could give Villanova a scare as the Eagles have rolled up 79.2 PPG to rank 35th in the nation. Again, their SOS wasn’t great, and they played just one quality opponent. ‘Nova should put up plenty of points against Winthrop’s defense, which coughs up points to the tune of 68.3 PPG, ranking 123rd in the country.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 142.5 (-115) is the play. Winthrop averaged 81.7 PPG in its three Big South Tournament games. Even through the Under went 2-0-1 in those contests, and 5-0-1 in the Eagles’ past six, Villanova is a much more quality opponent, who will put up points. The Wildcats, who hit the Over in their loss to Georgetown, averaged 75.8 PPG during the season, while hitting 35.5% of their 3-pointers. It won’t be a track meet, but it won’t be a defensive slog, either.

The Hoyas advanced to the quarterfinal after a 68-49 win over Marquette Wednesday afternoon. Georgetown outscored the Golden Eagles 16-2 at the free-throw line and outrebounded them, 46-32. GU — now 5-2 over its last seven games — is playing on back-to-back days for the first time this season.
Villanova is dealing with a couple of crucial and ill-timed injuries. Senior G Collin Gillespie (14.0 points per game) tore an MCL in a win over Creighton March 3. The following game (a March 6 loss to Providence) saw the Wildcats lose sophomore G Justin Moore (12.7 PPG) to an ankle injury. Gillespie is out for the season; Moore is doubtful for Thursday.

The Wildcats won an emotional game over visiting Creighton on Wednesday night, but they lost PG Collin Gillespie to a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee. He is expected to miss the rest of the season. Gillespie was second on the team with 14.0 points per game, and he led the club with 4.6 assists per outing while also helping with 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals per contest.
Villanova spanked Providence in suburban Philly back on Jan. 23, winning 71-56 while covering an 11.5-point spread. That was at home, though. The Wildcats have lost three in a row on the road, falling at Butler, at Creighton and at St. John’s. Their last win away from home was Jan. 30 at Seton Hall.
The Friars were humbled 81-67 by St. John’s and they have dropped two of the past three. Both of those losses were on the road, however. At home, they have won each of the past two, including a solid victory over Xavier on Feb. 24 at 1.5-point underdogs, 83-68.

PROVIDENCE (+165) is worth a look as moderate home ‘dogs, as Villanova (-200) is coming off an emotional roller coaster. They won the big mid-week clash with Creighton, but they lost one of their stars.

And the Wildcats haven’t been very good on the road lately, so the value play is backing the Friars.

Against the spread (ATS)

PROVIDENCE +4.5 (-110) is the way to go if you don’t trust them straight up, but expect a tight game. The Wildcats are 0-3 ATS in their past three forays away from home, and the Friars are 5-2 ATS across their past seven at home.

Providence is also a sparkling 6-0 ATS in their previous six at home against teams with a winning road record.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 139.5 (-110) is a good bet, even though Villanova is missing one of their stars on offense. While they lose some point production, they also lose a little bit of defense, too. Providence should be able to take advantage.

The Over is 4-1 in Villanova’s past five on the road, too. This one won’t be end-to-end action, as Providence has trended more to the Under, but it will inch across the finish line to the Over.

The Bluejays were also tripped up last time out, falling 77-69 at Xavier as 4-point favorites. While they lost that one, they’re still 4-1 SU (2-3 ATS) across their past five games on the road. Creighton is just 2-6 ATS in its past eight games on the road, including 1-4 ATS in the past five on the road against teams with a winning home record.
Villanova is a good offensive club, going for 77.2 points per game to rank 56th in the country. The Wildcats are also a good free-throw shooting team at 78.2% to rank 15th in the country. VILLANOVA (-225) is over my usual money line limit of -180, but the Wildcats are a solid bet on their home floor. The Wildcats haven’t lost in eight games at home, and they will have revenge on their minds after losing at Creighton Feb. 13.

Against the spread (ATS)

VILLANOVA -5.5 (-105) is a good bet on its home floor, especially since Creighton has struggled so much on the road, at least against the number.

You’ll be betting against some serious trends, as the road team has cashed in four of the past five games in this series, with the underdog going 6-0 ATS.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 146.5 (-110) is the best play on the board. Villanova has been crushing Overs lately, going 6-1 in its past seven at home, and 9-4 in its previous 13 games overall.

Creighton has rolled up 78.6 PPG on offense, ranking 39th in the nation, so they can hang with anyone. They will make you pull your hair out with their struggles at the free-throw line, as they hit just 65.7% of free throws, but we should see the Over inch across the line regardless.

As ridiculous as this sounds, it would appear as bookmakers aren’t adjusting the recent results between Villanova-Butler. The Over has cashed in three straight meetings and seven of the past eight contests.

Also, my read is that the Wildcats are motivated to finish their regular season strong after recent conference upsets, so I am expecting Villanova won’t take its foot off the gas. BET OVER 128.5 (-115) for a half-unit.

The Johnnies dropped a pivotal game for their NCAA Tournament chances by losing 88-83 to DePaul as 11-point home favorites. St. John’s, who was making an NCAA tourney push, has now lost two of its last three following a six-game winning streak, which included a win over then-No. 3 Villanova.
The Wildcats bounced back with a 68-60 win over UConn as 8-point home favorites after getting blown out 86-70 at then-No.17 Creighton Feb. 13. Villanova is 3-2 overall in its previous five games and just 1-3-1 ATS.
St. John’s legitimately dominated Villanova Feb. 3 waxing them 70-59 as 9-point home underdogs. The Red Storm’s defense held the Wildcats to a season-low in points and field-goal shooting and forced a season-high 15 turnovers.

Slight lean on ST. JOHN’S (+525) since it rolled Villanova the first time around and is 3-3 overall in the past six meetings. However, I’d only put a tiny wager if anything on the Johnnies to steal this win as the cover is the preferred betting option.

Against the spread (ATS)

BET ST. JOHN’S +11.5 (-110) much heavier or instead of the Johnnies’ money line. The St. John’s-Villanova market seems to be robotically backing the favorite since the Wildcats are a national powerhouse that regularly dominates the Big East.

But, the Red Storm play an aggressive, high ball-pressure style of defense that sped Villanova’s offense up and forced turnovers. Probable Big East Freshman of the Year, St. John’s PG Posh Alexander, leads the conference in steals per game and wreaked havoc in Villanova’s backcourt last game.

Also, the Johnnies have the best player on the floor in conference leading-scorer and a favorite for Big East Player of the Year, wing Julian Champagnie.

He didn’t score the ball as well as he hoped in the last St. John’s-Villanova game, but Champagnie was a difference-maker in the contest and led the Red Storm with 13 rebounds with a game-high three blocks.

With the Johnnies’ tournament hopes on the line, expect a gutsy performance out of the Red Storm today. TAKE ST. JOHN’S +11.5 (-110) for 1.25 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS with a lean on Over 152.5 (-110) because my expectation is that Villanova executes far better offensively than in its first game vs. St. John’s. On the other hand, the market is betting Over yet the total has been brought down from the 155.5-point opener, according to Pregame.com. This tells me the House wants bettors to back the Over. STAY AWAY.

Villanova got right back on track with two double-digit conference wins following its second loss of the season, a 70-59 setback at St. John’s as a 9-point favorite Feb 3. However, the Wildcats haven’t been a sure-fire bet lately as they are 5-1 overall but just 3-3 ATS in their last six games.
Creighton’s results over the past few weeks mirror Villanova’s as the Bluejays are also on a two-game win streak after losing as double-digit home favorites to Georgetown. Creighton has gone 5-1 overall but 2-4 ATS in its previous six games.
The Bluejays beat the snot out of the Wildcats 76-51 in their second meeting last season to snap a three-game skid in the series. Creighton has upset Villanova twice in the last five meetings and has covered in three of those contests.

Slight lean on CREIGHTON (+120) for a one-fifth-unit because when looking at the numbers, it appears the wrong team is favored. I get it: Villanova owns the Big East, is a national title contender (as per usual) and is one of the more popular basketball programs in the country.

However, Creighton has a higher effective field-goal percentage (eFG%) and its foes have a lower eFG% than Villanova’s. In fact, the Wildcats rank 265th in opponent’s field-goal percentage and 314th in 3-point defense.

My only explanation for the Villanova-Creighton pricing is that bookmakers know the Wildcats are going to get a bunch of public money regardless so they might as well make Villanova more expensive.

Against the spread (ATS)

BET CREIGHTON +2.5 (-110) instead of or heavier than its money line since it’s the wiser play.

This is a Pros vs. Joes situation in the betting market with more money coming in on Creighton, but more bets have been placed on Villanova, according to Pregame.com. Typically, the sharp side of the market is the money column, so let’s follow the money for this game.

Over/Under (O/U)

I’m on the OVER 145.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit because both teams take and make a high volume of 3’s and force opponents to beat them from behind the arc. Admittedly, it’s not a strong handicap, so think of it more as a lean.

Georgetown at Villanova: Three things to know

The Wildcats had a nine-game win streak snapped Wednesday at St. John’s. Villanova was undone by the dreaded double of posting its worst shooting mark of the season (32.3%) alongside its worst turnover performance (15).
Georgetown is coming off a long COVID-19-induced layoff (Jan. 10-29) and the two impressive wins — 73-72 vs. Providence and 86-79 at No. 12 Creighton. The latter of those games was Wednesday and it snapped a seven-game road skid that dated back to last season.
Villanova F Jermaine Samuels had a recent three-game stretch that saw him average 15.7 PPG on a 57.1% mark from the floor. That surge has the senior close to becoming a fifth double-digit scorer for a ‘Nova team averaging its most points since the 2017-18 national championship season. Samuels is averaging 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

The Wildcats beat the Hoyas 76-63 when these two teams met in D.C in December. The spread in that one was Villanova -12.

The thought of a Villanova returning to form — especially off the iffy shooting and turnover numbers from its loss to St. John’s — and a road-weary GU team being a bit flat has some merit but a 14.5-point tag is too much for a ‘Nova team which plays low-possession-total games.

When favored by 9-to-15 points this season, the Wildcats are 3-4 ATS. For Sunday, the lean is on the Hoyas if you can get a level-priced (-110 or better) +14.5 or +15 cushion.

Over/Under (O/U)

The last meeting between these two was appraised at 142.5 and landed on 139. The ‘Cats and Hoyas combined for 79 points in the first half of a game in which the home side gave plenty of push. Without team-average shooting or an average number of free-throw attempts, the game landed on 139.
