Why Georgetown Will Win

Georgetown can hit the boards.

The defense might not be anything great, and it might not force a whole lot of mistakes, but it’s able to hit the boards hard and should be able to come up with enough offensive rebounds to come up with plenty of second chance points.

The Hoyas lost the first time around 85-74, but they were able to make almost all of their free throws and weren’t hit all that hard from the outside.

Keep Villanova off the free throw line and hot it to under ten made threes, and Georgetown will be doing its job to keep this close.

Why Villanova Will Win

Georgetown has lost 15 straight for a reason.

Yeah, it can rebound, but it’s awful at guarding teams from the outside – almost everyone hits 40% from three lately against this defense – and there’s just not enough rebounds to be had. It has allowed teams to make 45% or more of its shots in the last five games, and letting teams hit half of their shots has been close to the norm.

Villanova might not be consistent lately from three, but it’s great from the field and amazing on the free throw line. Georgetown doesn’t have the defense to hold up.

What’s Going To Happen

Everyone is getting fat on the Hoya defense, and now Villanova gets to have its turn again.

Even if the threes aren’t dropping like they normally are, the Wildcats will still do far more from the outside than the Hoyas will, and they’ll pull away by being terrific on the free throw line.

Why Georgetown Will Win

Georgetown picked a great time to come up with one of its strongest performances of the season with a 32-14 halftime lead over Marquette in a 68-49 win.

The Hoyas led the Big East in rebounds before this game, and then whacked the Golden Eagles with a +14 rebounding margin while also going against type and getting to the free throw line over and over again. They made 16 free throws to Marquette’s 4.

They lost twice to Villanova even though they shot well and was stronger on the boards. As long as they can do a stronger job a defending the three – and if they can be a bit sharper than they were against Marquette – they should be in this.

Why Villanova Will Win

Yeah, Georgetown rolled through the first round, but they’re usually a turnover machine without the ability too force a whole bunch of mistakes. Villanova is brilliant at hanging on to the ball and and even better at hitting from the free throw line.

They’ve been struggling a bit lately with two losses in their last three games with the offense going cold, but the had the Big East won and now are about to ramp up the offensive intensity. At least that’s the hope.

What’s Going To Happen

Georgetown is going to give Villanova a whole lot of problems.

The team that showed up in the first round will be great on the boards – that’s what the Hoyas do – but the Wildcats will D up after halftime, force a slew of turnovers, and go on a flash run of threes to finally take over.

Why Georgetown Will Win

The Hoyas have found something that worked over the las few games.

It was a rough year thanks to a long losing streak and a brutal layoff, but the team came beck rejuvenated after almost three weeks off with wins over Providence and Creighton.

Can Villanova bounce back after struggling from the field, having its worst shooting day of the year three three, and getting out rebounded by the St. John’s in a stunning loss?

Over the last two games Georgetown has been good at holding down the three and has been fantastic on the boards.

It’s playing like a team with relatively fresh legs.

Really? You think Villanova is going to hit just 8 of 30 shots from three for a second game in a row?

It hasn’t always been easy for the Wildcats – especially lately – but they had no problems with Georgetown in the first meeting back in mid-December’s 13-point win. They weren’t that great from the outside and were outrebounded, and they still won easily because they got to the free throw line and the Hoyas didn’t.

Georgetown might be playing better, but it’s still not a great defensive team and doesn’t force enough mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen

There have been a few too many fights for Villanova since missing several weeks, and it’s almost like they can’t quite get their groove back. However, they’re at home, they’re coming off the ugly loss, and they’re about to start shooting well again after it takes a few minutes to get going.

Why Villanova Will Win

Georgetown is bad at college basketball at the moment.

It’s had a rough season overall, but it’s fallen off the map with a five-game losing streak including a few ugly blowouts along the way. The defense isn’t slowing down anyone from the outside, and that’s right in the Villanova wheelhouse.

The Wildcats bounced back from a lousy performance against Providence by wrecking Seton Hall, hitting over half of their shots and over 40% from three.

If they get going early, forget it.

Why Georgetown Will Win

Yeah, it’s been a rough run for the Hoyas, but they’ve also been on the road for three of their last four games and pushed Xavier hard in a tough loss last week.

Keeping the ball moving is a must – Villanova doesn’t do a lot to take the ball away – and it can hit from three, too. The Cats have a decent defense on the outside, but it’s not a wall.

If Georgetown can get hot right away from the outside, and if it can own the glass when Villanova actually does miss, it should be able to keep the game close in the final home game of the season.

What’s Going To Happen

Villanova won 80-66 back in mid-January by ripping it up from three in a red hot second half. Georgetown will keep this just close enough to make it competitive, but it won’t have enough offensively to overcome one big VU run to pull off the upset.
