Tennessee’s football tradition: VFLs in the Super Bowl

KNOXVILLE — As the football world prepares for Super Bowl LIV on Sunday, Vols Wire takes a look at those players with Tennessee ties who have previously appeared in the big game.

Tennessee has produced more players to play on the NFL’s grand stage than any other school in the country and the Volunteers will boast a Super Bowl champion when the final gun sounds late Sunday night as Dustin Colquitt plays for Kansas City and Emmanuel Moseley is a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

The first former Volunteer to play in the Super Bowl was the late Bill Anderson.

Anderson, who was a longtime radio analyst who worked alongside the legendary John Ward, was a member of the 1966 Green Bay Packers who won Super Bowl I, making him the first Vol to win a title.

He was the first of 72 VFLs to play in the big game.

Colquitt, a Bearden High School product, will be the third punter in the Colquitt family to appear in the Super Bowl when he takes the field on Sunday. He joins his father, Craig, a two-time champion with the Steelers, and brother, Britton, who played for the Broncos.

Peyton Manning has played in four Super Bowls, two with Indianapolis and two with the Broncos, winning a title in each city.

Bill Bates, a Farragut High School alumnus, won three Super Bowls under two head coaches (Barry Switzer and 2020 Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Johnson) with the Dallas Cowboys.

Other VFLs to have multiple Super Bowl rings include: Jack “Hacksaw” Reynolds (San Francisco), Marcus Nash (Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos), Raleigh McKenzie (Washington Redskins) and Mickey Marvin (Raiders).

Other VFLs to play in the big game include John Kelly, Cordarrelle Patterson, Reggie White, Neil Clabo, Jabari Greer, Troy Fleming and others.

VFLs have tough Wild Card Weekend

Vols in the NFL.

KNOXVILLR — The National Football League’s Wild Card Weekend wasn’t exactly kind to former Tennessee Volunteers in 2020.

On Sunday the New Orleans Saints, the NFC’s No. 3 seed, fell at home to the No. 6 Minnesota Vikings.

New Orleans, which had to be considered a favorite to make it to the Super Bowl, lost in overtime to the Vikings, 26-20, marking the third consecutive postseason that New Orleans had a heartbreaking exit from the playoffs.

Alvin Kamara rushed for 21 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. He also pulled in eight receptions and amassed 34 yards.

On defense, New Orleans rookie defensive lineman Shy Tuttle had two tackles.

For Minnesota, punter Britton Colquitt had six punts for 298 yards and booted one kick inside the 20-yard line.

In Sunday’s other NFC Wild Card tilt, Seattle notched a 17-9 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. In that game, the Eagles’ Derek Barnett had a solo tackle and two assists.

This week’s divisional round

  • Minnesota will travel to San Francisco on Saturday. Game time is slated for 4:35 p.m. (ET).
  • Emmanuel Moseley, a defensive back, has had a solid season for the top-seeded 49ers.
  • Kansas City and punter Dustin Colquitt will host Houston at 3:05 p.m. (ET) Sunday.

KNOXVILLE — For years, the National Football League has been a part of the Thanksgiving tradition.

The game of professional football has long gone beside ham, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie.

Each year, the NFL has traditional games in Detroit and Dallas. In recent years, the league has added a prime time game in the evening and most football fans watch the games with at least a casual passing interest.

But University of Tennessee fans may take a special interest in the league’s holiday offerings in 2019 as several former University of Tennessee standouts will don their professional colors and take the field.

The day opens with the Chicago Bears visiting the Lions in Motown at 12:30 p.m.

Cordarrelle Patterson, one of the game’s most versatile offensive players and an elite special teams players, is a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season for the Bears.

Justin Coleman and Jaylen Reeves-Maybin play for the Lions.

VFL Jason Witten and the Cowboys host the Buffalo Bills at 4:30 p.m.

The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons will square off in an NFC South battle. Alvin Kamara and Shy Tuttle will look to help the Saints continue their successful 2019 season, while Luke Stocker holds a roster spot for Atlanta.
