How to Watch: Florida baseball vs Vanderbilt Commodores in SEC Tournament

Take a look at everything you need to know about Thursday night’s Florida-Vanderbilt matchup in the 2023 SEC Tournament.

Florida baseball won the opening game of its 2023 Southeastern Conference Tournament endeavor on Wednesday night, 7-6, in walk-off fashion after 11 innings of play. Now, the Gators face the Vanderbilt Commodores on Thursday, May 25, at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Alabama, for the third round of college baseball action.

The Orange and Blue swept Vandy at home in a three-game weekend series from March 12-14, run-ruling the opposition in the opener while earning the victory in the next two by a 6-2 score. The ‘Dores, however, are the No. 4 seed in this tournament and still put together a solid regular-season run, so anything can happen.

Take a look below at everything you need to know about Thursday night’s Florida-Vanderbilt matchup in the 2023 SEC Tournament.

Game Preview: Florida and Vanderbilt set to square off in SEC Tournament

Florida swept Vanderbilt a couple of weeks ago, but can the Gators get the job done again at the SEC Tournament and earn another rest day on Friday.

Florida mounted a massive three-run comeback in the 11th inning Wednesday night to beat Alabama in the second round of the SEC Tournament, and now the Gators have Vanderbilt on the schedule in round three.

The middle rounds (2-4) are double elimination, so Florida won’t play Friday if it wins. A loss would mean a matchup with the winner of the Alabama and Auburn game.

Florida will throw Brandon Sproat, but he’ll likely be on a pitch count to keep his arm fresh for the NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt is throwing an arm the Gators haven’t seen before, left-hander Hunter Owen.

First pitch is scheduled for 30 minutes after the finish of ArkansasLSU (about 8:30 p.m. EDT).

Gators complete sweep of Vanderbilt on Senior Day

Sweeping Vanderbilt means that Florida controls its own destiny in the SEC East moving forward and has a shot at finishing on top of the entire conference.

After a few shaky weeks of SEC play, the Florida Gators swept the No. 5  Vanderbilt Commodores over the weekend, capping things off with a 6-2 win on Mother’s Day.

Wyatt Langford led the offense with two home runs, a double and four runs batted in. The future first-round draft pick is firing on all cylinders after missing some time earlier in the year with a groin injury. He even made a few leaping plays in the outfield over the weekend.

Jac Caglianone also had a multi-hit day, but he didn’t add to his program-record home run total this weekend as many expected. He did impress on the mound, striking out nine over 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball. Brandon Neely took over for Caglianone with two outs in the seventh but couldn’t prevent the run from scoring.

Vanderbilt scored again in the eighth when center fielder Michael Robertson misread a ball hit to him that ended up being a double. With just a handful of outs to go in the game, Florida gladly traded the run for an out at first. Neely closed things out with a flawless ninth and Florida now controls its own fate in the SEC East.

The Commodores entered the weekend up two games on the Gators, but now UF leads by one. The regular season comes to an end at the end of next week, following the conclusion of the Kentucky series. Then, it’s playoff time.

It also happened to be Senior Day at the ballpark, and the program said goodbye to seven members of the team.

Men’s college golf spring-only Golfweek/Sagarin rankings for 2023

Teams can look drastically different when the calendar turns in the middle of the season.

College golf is a split-season, fall-and-spring sport.

Teams can look drastically different when the calendar turns in the middle of the season – and that’s in a normal year.

Using the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings for men’s college golf, this chart shows each team’s performance only in the spring 2023 season. The far right column rates strength of schedule.

The men’s NCAA regionals are set to begin Monday, May 15 and end Wednesday, May 17. From there, top teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, for the last time, from May 26-31

In the season-long rankings, Vanderbilt is No. 1, and using only spring results, Vanderbilt is still your top-ranked team. This makes the second consecutive year Vanderbilt has topped the spring only ratings.

Florida baseball returns home to host the Vanderbilt Commodores this weekend on Sunday, May 13, at Condron Family Ballpark in Gainesville, Florida, for the third and final game of the penultimate series of the 2023 schedule, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

The Gators got off to a strong start in non-conference play before earning a series win over the Alabama Crimson Tide at home to open SEC competition. Florida then took a single midweek game from the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee before sweeping a doubleheader over the Ole Miss Rebels on the road, following that up with two out of three at home from the Auburn Tigers.

Florida prevailed over the visiting Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at home before taking two of three on the road against the Tennessee Volunteers. Then on Tuesday, the Gators prevailed over the Seminoles again before dropping the opener to the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday. They bounced back on Saturday, before clinching the series on Sunday. The Orange and Blue then mercy-ruled the Florida A&M Rattlers.

The Gators were then swept on the road by the South Carolina Gamecocks for their first series loss of the season buts bounced back with a win over the North Florida Ospreys during the week before sweeping the Missouri Tigers last weekend. Speaking of sweeps, UF took all three games from FSU this season on Tuesday night with a win as well.

The Orange and Blue took the opener of last weekend’s series at the Texas A&M Aggies on Friday night before the home team bounced back to earn the series win with two-straight victories. Florida earned a mercy-rule win in this weekend’s opener on Friday while taking the second game on Saturday night.

Series Preview: Florida hosts Vanderbilt in final home series of 2023

Florida and Vanderbilt are battling for SEC East supremacy in the final weeks of the season. Will being at home help the Gators take the series this weekend?

The Florida Gators have lost two of their last three weekend series against SEC clubs, and No. 4 Vanderbilt is coming to town for a three-game set that could decide who wins the SEC East.

The Gators are ranked No. 5 in the nation by USA TODAY Sports and are 2.0 games back of the Commodores for the top spot in the East. A sweep would put Florida on top of the division, but anything less might make a first-place finish difficult.

At one point in the season, Florida looked like the best offensive team in the country. While that might still be true, opponents have put together their best pitching weekends of the season against the Gators over the past couple of series. Is it simply bad luck or is there something deeper going on causing the team’s woes?

Here’s a look at the club heading into the weekend series against Vanderbilt.

5 major takeaways following Florida’s series loss to Texas A&M

It was a rough weekend in College Station for the boys in Orange and Blue, and Florida needs to regroup fast before facing Vanderbilt.

It’s been a few weeks since Gators Wire has looked at the bigger picture regarding Florida’s baseball program, and what better time to revisit things than with two weeks left until the end of the regular season?

The Gators are 37-12 overall and 15-9 against the SEC following a series loss to Texas A&M that ended on a walk-off balk. South Carolina swept Florida two weeks ago, and a sweep against Missouri doesn’t save the Gators.

The best pieces of the pitching staff have looked overwhelmed lately, and the bats are quieting down as every conference foe has their best weekend on the mound against Florida. It’s a frustrating time to be a Gators fan in a vacuum, but things are okay overall.

Florida will still push to host a Super Regional and is widely accepted to be one of the top 10 teams in the country. The question is whether UF is in that top-5 conversation. That will be answered in a week after a series against Vanderbilt.

Here’s where the Gators stand heading into the weekend.
