Watch: Abraham Ancer takes the clubhouse lead for best club toss of the year

It’s not the first time Ancer’s let loose in anger this year.

Don’t tell Abraham Ancer that he doesn’t care about how he plays now that’s he’s joined LIV Golf.

The 33-year-old Mexican melted down on Sunday, letting his emotions get the better of him after chunking a critical shot late in his round at LIV Golf Andalucia at Valderrama in Spain.

Ancer, a member of Team Fireballs, who were clinging to the lead in the team portion of competition, was short of the green on the fifth hole, his 17th hole of the day, when he decelerated and chunked his pitch short of the green. That would eventually lead to a costly bogey, but it’s what happened next that will make highlight shows: Ancer chucked his club in disgust and it likely covered more distance than his ball. It’s the leader in the clubhouse for the best club toss of the year.

High marks for Ancer’s technique but he forgot Tommy Bolt’s famous advice to always throw a club forward so you don’t have to walk back – or in Ancer’s case to the side – to fetch it.

Ancer, who shot 72, answered with a chip-in on the next hole and he and teammate David Puig helped the Fireballs to victory in a playoff in the team portion of the LIV competition.

It’s not the first time Ancer’s let loose in anger this year. He showed his versatility as a club tosser with this two-handed, overhand tomahawk. But his latest effort topped it. Nearly half the year still remains to see if he can do one even better.

2024 LIV Golf Andalucia prize money payouts for each player and team

A big payday for Sergio.

Sergio Garcia finally got it done.

The Spaniard earned his first LIV Golf victory Sunday in Spain, beating Anirban Lahiri on the second playoff hole for his first professional win since the 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship. Garcia shot 5 under in the final round to tie Lahiri, and in the process he earned himself a $4 million payday.

For the first time on LIV Golf, there was a playoff for the individual title and team title in the same event. Garcia’s Fireballs GC topped Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC to bring home the $3 million prize.

Sergio Garcia beats Anirban Lahiri in playoff to win 2024 LIV Golf Andalucia in Spain

For the first time on LIV Golf, there was a double playoff in Spain.

Fourth time is the charm for Sergio Garcia.

The Spaniard found himself in a playoff for the third time this year on the LIV Golf League and fourth time since joining the circuit. Finally, he gets to hoist a trophy.

Garcia shot 5-under 66 on Sunday at LIV Golf Andalucia to get into a playoff with Anirban Lahiri, and then he won with a par on the second playoff hole to get his first professional victory in nearly four years.

“I knew I was playing well,” Garcia said. “I love this place. I love these people. So thankful to everyone for what we were able to achieve today.”

For Garcia, the win was extra special coming in his home country at Valderrama. Garcia bogeyed his final hole Sunday to drop to 5 under overall, but Lahiri missed a putt of about 2 feet to win outright, leading to a playoff.

And for the first time in LIV Golf history, there was also a playoff for a team title in addition to the individual one.

On the first playoff hole, Abraham Ancer and David Puig from Fireballs GC, captained by Garcia, beat Crushers GC’s Bryson DeChambeau and Paul Casey on the first playoff hole for the $3 million team prize.

” I’m very lucky, I feel it every time wherever I go, but obviously on my home turf and here at Valderrama where I’ve done so well, I always feel it,” Garcia. “That’s one of the main reasons why I love playing here. Not only the difficulty and the beauty of the course but the support that we get here, it’s amazing.”

Sunday is a big day in the sports world.

Just in the golf world, there are numerous titles on the line across Europe and the United States. Then there’s the Wimbledon final on top of the Euro 2024 final, which features England taking on Spain.

LIV Golf Andalucia is in Spain this week at Valderrama in Sotogrande, a home game for Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia and other Spaniards in the field.

Well, Brooks Koepka had something up his sleeve on Sunday. He was paired with Rahm and Garcia for the final round, and he walked to the first tee wearing an England soccer kit to troll the duo.

Bryson DeChambeau holes out (again) in 2024 LIV Golf Andalucia at Valderrama

He has had memorable hole outs in each of the first three major championships this year, all coming on the 18th hole. He added another one to his resume on Saturday during the second round of 2024 LIV Golf Andalucia.

DeChambeau holed out from the 14th fairway for eagle on the 370-yard hole. The big bird moved him to 2 under for the day, and he signed for a 4-under 67 on Saturday at Valderrama Golf Club in Sotogrande, Spain, one of the lowest rounds of the week.

However, it’s DeChambeau’s Crushers GC teammate, Anirban Lahiri, who is on top of the leaderboard after 36 holes. While DeChambeau is T-6 at 1 under overall, Lahiri is at 7 under with a four-shot lead going into the final round.

Crushers GC, which won the team championship in 2023, also leads by four over Fireballs GC, featuring Spanish captain Sergio Garcia.

Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau supportive of Keegan Bradley’s selection as U.S. Ryder Cup captain

“I was surprised at the pick, and I think it’s a great pick the more I think about it.”

Phil Mickelson has plenty of history at the Ryder Cup with Keegan Bradley. So it’s no surprise the first question he was asked Wednesday at his pre-tournament press conference ahead of 2024 LIV Golf Andalucia was about the new United States Ryder Cup captain.

“I was surprised at the pick, and I think it’s a great pick the more I think about it,” Lefty said. “He played a lot of golf at Bethpage when he went to St. John’s. His passion for the Ryder Cup is greater than just about any player I’ve ever seen. His love for the Ryder Cup is more than anybody I know. I think he’s going to lead with that type of passion.”

Mickelson and Bradley were 4–1 as teammates across two Ryder Cups, accounting for all of Bradley’s wins in the competition. They were also 2–1–1 at the 2013 Presidents Cup.

On Tuesday during his introductory press conference in New York City, Bradley spoke highly of Mickelson but said he hadn’t spoken with him since being selected. Bradley also noted he didn’t believe Mickelson would be interested in being one of his assistants.

Mickelson was not asked about that in Spain.

“I think he’s incredible,” Mickelson said. “I’m really, really happy for him. I think we all are really happy for him knowing how gut-wrenching it was to not be part of the team last year, but to now have the opportunity to lead and go forward I think is great.”

Bradley, as documented in the Netflix series “Full Swing,” was heartbroken when not selected for the U.S. team last year in Rome, which the Americans eventually lost 16½-11½. Bradley is well known for still not unpacking his suitcase from the 2014 Ryder Cup, a U.S. defeat at Glen Eagles in Scotland.

Mickelson wasn’t the only person in the golf world surprised by the pick. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing, 2024 U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau said.

“I’m excited for him,” DeChambeau said Wednesday. “I think it’s a great opportunity for him, especially as it relates to younger players. He’s going to see that younger threshold, and obviously relate to them a lot more, I would say, because of his age. I mean, what is he, 38 or something like that?

“So yeah, he’s seeing the younger generation game. He’s out there still playing, and competing and it’s great to have some relate-ability. As far as picking the best players, that’s the right approach and I couldn’t be more happy for him as captain.”

Bradley said Tuesday his picks for the team would be the 12 best players, regardless of where they play. More than a year out, DeChambeau is second in the standings, trailing only Scottie Scheffler, but he was also left off the team last year, which featured Brooks Koepka as the only LIV Golf player competing in Italy.

LIV Golf is in Spain at Valderrama Golf Club for LIV Golf Andalucia. Valderrama is a par-71 layout measuring 7,028 yards. The club hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997.

This marked the first LIV event since the agreement between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which is the main backer for LIV Golf.

This is the first of two events in Europe ahead of the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, with LIV Golf London set to take place next week.

Talor Gooch finished birdie-birdie on Sunday to outlast Bryson DeChambeau and claim his third win of the LIV Golf League season.
