Conference USA Tournament: UTEP vs. Western Kentucky odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UTEP vs. Western Kentucky odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The UTEP Miners (18-15) and Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (21-11) meet in the Conference USA Tournament Championship Game Saturday at the Propst Arena in Huntsville, Ala. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET (CBSSN). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the UTEP vs. Western Kentucky odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

The 5th-seeded Miners have won 5 in a row, tying a season. UTEP also won 5 straight to opener the season from Nov. 6-21. The Miners have covered 4 of those games, including tournament wins against Liberty and top-seeded Sam Houston State.

The 3rd-seeded Hilltoppers have crushed all comers in the CUSA Tournament, beating New Mexico State by 20 Thursday, and topping Middle Tennessee Friday by 31 points. Western Kentucky has covered 3 in a row, and it is 7-3 against the spread (ATS) in the past 10 games.

Western Kentucky has won 8 of the past 9 meetings, although the teams split the regular-season series this year. UTEP won 93-87 in El Paso as a 1.5-point favorite on Jan. 20, while Western Kentucky won 90-80 as a 7-point favorite on Feb. 15. The Over cashed in each regular-season meeting, and the total has gone high in 5 straight in the series.

UTEP vs. Western Kentucky picks and predictions

Prediction

Western Kentucky 87, UTEP 80

Moneyline

WESTERN KENTUCKY (-162) isn’t priced out of line as a moderate favorite, if you just want to pick a winner in this Conference USA title bout, and you don’t want to fiddle around with the points.

The Hilltoppers won the most recent meeting by 10 points, and they’ve taken 8 of the past 9 in the series, too.

Against the spread

WESTERN KENTUCKY -2.5 (-120) is a decent play laying the points. The Hilltoppers are on a 7-3 ATS run, including the most recent meeting with UTEP +2.5 (-102).

The Miners are looking to get back to the Big Dance for the first time since 2010, but they’ll have to wait a little while longer.

Over/Under

OVER 145.5 (-106) is a strong play in this title game.

In the 2 regular-season meetings, Western Kentucky averaged 88.5 PPG against the Miners, while UTEP was good for 86.5 PPG in the 2 meetings with the ‘Toppers. The Over has cashed in 5 straight in the series, too.

While UTEP has hit the Under in the 2 tourney games in Huntsville, WKU has cashed the Over in 4 of the past 5 games, while going for 83 or more points in 4 of those outings, too. Go high, and feel confidently in doing so.

New Mexico State at UTEP odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s New Mexico State Aggies at UTEP Miners odds and lines, with college football expert picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The New Mexico State Aggies (4-3, 2-1 Conference USA) and UTEP Miners (2-5, 1-2) tussle in a midweek showdown in El Paso. The Wednesday contest at the Sun Bowl kicks off at 9 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the New Mexico State vs. UTEP odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

New Mexico State beat Sam Houston State 27-13 last Wednesday, covering as a 4-point favorite and winning its 2nd straight game. NMSU has yielded just 23.1 points per game, an average that ranks 3rd in CUSA. The Aggies have been especially stingy in the red zone, allowing TDs on just 48.3% of opponent trips.

The Miners snapped a 4-game losing skid with a 27-14 win at Florida International last Wednesday (as a +3.5 underdog). Texas-El Paso bolted out of the gate with 21 1st-quarter points in that game.  The Miners also leveraged a plus-2 in turnover margin. That was a flip of the script for a team that had been a minus-8 heading in to that contest.

New Mexico State at UTEP picks and predictions

Prediction

New Mexico State 31, UTEP 24

Moneyline

PASS. Peg the true odds as being drowned by the juice.

Against the spread

The NMSU yards-per-play advantage is substantial, especially when the Aggies offense is on the field. Peg UTEP’s pass defense being significantly worse than what one might see in a ranking of yards allowed (204.7, 36th FBS). But there is enough hidden value in the Miners offense that the 3-and-a-hook carries little value. PASS.

Over/Under

The trends on both sides are full of Unders, but the play here is the zag to that zig.

The Miners have had 3 games where they’ve been undone by turnovers, short fields and 3rd-down inefficiency. Some better offensive signals lurk below the surface.

There has been an uptick in New Mexico State’s throwing percentage in its play mix. Its pace of play is on the slower side for the season as a whole but up quite a bit over recent games.

Look for both teams to move the ball on a good-weather evening in El Paso. FanDuel Sportsbook offers the better pricing here. TAKE THE OVER 47.5 (-110).

UTEP at FIU odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s UTEP at FIU odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The UTEP Miners (1-5, 0-2 CUSA) and the FIU Golden Panthers (3-3, 0-3) meet Wednesday night at Riccardo Silva Stadium in Miami for a Conference USA league game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (CBS Sports Network). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the UTEP vs. FIU odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Miners are coming off a 24-10 setback at home in the Sun Bowl against Louisiana Tech last Friday, failing to cover a 1.5-point spread. Not only has UTEP dropped the past 4 games, it has failed to cover each game, too. In fact, the Miners are winless in 5 tries against FBS teams, also going 0-5 against the spread (ATS).

The Golden Panthers were doubled up at New Mexico State 34-17, not even coming close to covering a 6.5-point number. The last time FIU was home, it was pounded by Liberty 38-6 on Sept. 23, snapping a 3-game winning streak.

FIU ranks 124th in the NCAA stats with 207.7 rushing yards allowed. That’s the one thing UTEP does well on offense, averaging 158.5 yards per game, ranking 64th, but the offense has managed just 16.2 PPG, good for 130th in FBS.

UTEP at FIU odds

  • Moneyline (ML): UTEP +110 (bet $100 to win $110) | FIU -135 (bet $135 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): UTEP +2.5 (-120) | FIU -2.5 (+100)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 43.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

UTEP at FIU picks and predictions

Prediction

FIU 23, UTEP 18

Moneyline

FIU (-135) is a good play at home, as the Golden Panthers have had a measure of success this season. While it was completely outplayed at New Mexico State last weekend, the Golden Panthers have showed resiliency before. FIU topped North Texas in a high-scoring 46-39 win on Sept. 9 at home, and it went on the road to top UConn on Sept. 16, winning 24-17.

UTEP (+110) has no such victories on its resume. The Miners has topped only Incarnate Word of the FCS back on Sept. 2, and UTEP is winless in 3 games on the road, losing the past 2 games by 21 or more points.

Against the spread

FIU -2.5 (+100) is a decent play as long as this stays under a flat 3, especially at even-money.

Again, UTEP +2.5 (-120) has failed to cover all 5 games against FBS opponents this season. The Golden Panthers have covered 2 of the past 4 games, and they’re the lean, especially since they’re at home. As long as FIU can manage to at least slow the run game, it will get the job done.

Over/Under

UNDER 43.5 (-105) is a low number, but these are both dysfunctional offenses.

FIU manages just 328.8 total yards per game, and 107.5 rushing yards per game, while cobbling together just 20.7 PPG.

UTEP has managed 346.2 total yards per game, while going for just 187.7 passing yards per outing, and the Miners are good for just 16.2 PPG. And if you take out the 28 points scored against Incarnate Word, the Miners offense has managed just 13.8 PPG in 5 games against FBS opponents. The defense has been shaky, allowing 24 or more points in 4 straight games, it should be decent enough against a struggling FIU squad.

UTEP at Oklahoma odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UTEP at Oklahoma odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UTEP Miners (0-1) visit the No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners (0-0) at Memorial Stadium Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff (FOX). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the UTEP vs. Oklahoma odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

(Rankings courtesy of the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports)

The Miners fell to North Texas 31-13 last week. It was an inefficient game from redshirt junior QB Gavin Hardison as he completed only 21 of his 48 passes for 293 yards and a touchdown – with no interceptions.

For Oklahoma, it will be the Sooners’ 1st game under coach Brent Venables, who replaced Lincoln Riley. Venables is expected to bring a tenacious defense to Oklahoma and UCF transfer QB Dillon Gabriel brings experience to the offense.

UTEP at Oklahoma picks and predictions

Prediction

Oklahoma 55, UTEP 13

Money line

Given the lopsided odds in favor of the Sooners (-10000), it’s an easy PASS for me when it comes to betting the money line in this game. Oklahoma should easily take down UTEP, but it’s still not worth risking a ton of money just to get little to nothing in return.

Against the spread

Taking massive spreads in college football can be a risky endeavor, especially in the early portion of the season. However, OKLAHOMA -30.5 (-108) has decent value after UTEP lost by 18 to North Texas a week ago and the Sooners defense should be up to the task of limiting the Miners offense.

The Miners are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 meetings with a Big 12 program. Meanwhile, the Sooners are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games.

Over/Under

OVER 57.5 (-108) is where I’m leaning in this contest despite the Sooners having a new-look offense following the departure of Riley as their coach. Gabriel is more than capable of taking advantage of a UTEP defense that just surrendered 31 points to North Texas, and Oklahoma’s defense could make plays that lead to more scoring opportunities.

The Sooners could score 58-plus points themselves in this game. Plus, the Over is 4-0 in Oklahoma’s last 4 games vs. a Conference USA program.

New Mexico Bowl: UTEP vs. Fresno State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s New Mexico Bowl odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UTEP Miners (7-5) and Fresno State Bulldogs (9-3) tangle in Saturday’s New Mexico Bowl. The contest at University Stadium in Albuquerque will kick off at 2:15 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the UTEP vs. Fresno State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

UTEP faltered after starting its season 6-1. The Miners are 1-4 since Oct. 30. Penalties have been a problem for the Miners. UTEP has been tagged with 10-plus flags in three of its last five games. The Miners’ 8.5 penalties per game rank 125th in the nation.

The Bulldogs are on more of a surge coming into this mid-December bowl tilt. Fresno State is 5-1 over its last six games; four of those wins have been by multiple scores. Senior QB Jake Haener leads a Fresno State offense that ranks ninth in the nation in passing yards (330.1 per game). Haener has completed 67.5% of his passes for 3,810 yards; he has thrown 32 touchdown passes against nine interceptions.

UTEP vs. Fresno State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Fresno State 38, UTEP 24

Money line

PASS: there is some lean toward Fresno State in principle, but there is too much gray area to navigate through.

Against the spread

Haener has become a question mark for this one, and that has this potential play on hold. The Bulldog quarterback has been in and out of the transfer portal, and his status is unclear moving into this game.

There is still no word on if Haener will play, but the team has welcomed him back with open arms. STEER CLEAR for now, but monitor the Haener news and be ready to pounce.

Over/Under

Fresno struggles in preventing big pass plays; the Miners excel in cranking those out. On a good-weather day in Albuquerque, look for the offenses to have more say than what the public is expecting.

BACK THE OVER 51.5 (-110).

Louisiana Tech at UTEP odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Louisiana Tech at UTEP odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0 CUSA) and UTEP Miners (5-1, 2-0) meet Saturday for a Conference-USA West Division game with a 9 p.m. ET kickoff at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. Below, we look at the Louisiana Tech vs. UTEP odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Louisiana Tech enters this game off a hard-fought loss at then-ranked North Carolina State followed by a bye week. The Bulldogs are a throw-first team with a quarterback – Austin Kendall – who can also produce with his legs. Can LTU be productive on the road, though? Dating back to last season, the Bulldogs are 1-5 over their last six road games.

The Miners have been solid defensively, especially against the run. They are coming off a 27-13 win at Southern Miss in which they held the Golden Eagles to just 15 rushing yards. UTEP has held foes under 2.7 yards per rushing attempt in back-to-back games. The Miners enter this game on a three-game win streak.

Louisiana Tech at UTEP odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

UTEP 31, Louisiana Tech 27

Money line

Underappreciated Team from El Paso. UTEP is a live underdog in this home game and a genuine threat to pull off the outright victory, which would run the Miners home mark to 4-0.

Texas-El Paso may well show some improved passing numbers in this game: Louisiana Tech coughs up 320.6 aerial yards per contest, which ranks 129th in the nation. La. Tech doesn’t cause much havoc, and UTEP could find some success if it can leverage the play-action game.

The Miners are solid on the defensive line, and they do create havoc. That could spell a close game late for the Bulldogs.

TAKE UTEP (+205).

Against the spread

The Miners have been iffy on finishing offensive drives, but LTU struggles defensively in that same category. If UTEP can just be successful at a near-average level, the Miners have a solid opportunity to keep this game within a field goal.

TAKE UTEP +6.5 (-107): consider pairing this play with the above, using partial units on both.

Over/Under

Lots of cross signals here: PASS.

New Mexico at UTEP odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s New Mexico at UTEP odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Lobos opened 2-0 SU with narrow wins over FCS Houston Baptist and rival New Mexico State, but they were still feeling good. However, UNM crashed back to Earth with a 34-0 loss at Texas A&M, slipping to 0-3 ATS.

The Miners have also been feeling good, stopping New Mexico State 30-3 in the opener before a 38-28 win over FCS Bethune-Cookman. However, UTEP lost last time out at Boise State on Sept. 10, 54-13. The Over has cashed in each of the past two.

New Mexico at UTEP odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

UTEP 26, New Mexico 23

Money line

I love UTEP (+102) as short ‘dogs at home. The Sun Bowl hasn’t been a difficult place to play in recent seasons, but head coach Dana Dimel has things going in the right direction. The Miners stacked up 420.3 total yards per game, ranking 58th in the nation, and they’re 33rd overall with 199.0 rushing yards per outing.

While New Mexico (-125) has been strong against the run, this is an offense still struggling. They rank just 111th with 329.7 total yards per outing, and they’re 97th in the nation in both passing and rushing yards per game while going for just 20.3 PPG.

Against the spread

AVOID.

UTEP +1.5 (-108) isn’t as good of a value as playing the home side straight up, unless you really feel strongly New Mexico -1.5 (-112) is going to win by just one point. Just play the money line.

Stream college football games on ESPN+ by signing up here.

Over/Under

The UNDER 53.5 (-108) is the lean here. New Mexico just hasn’t produced enough offensively outside of its rivalry game with New Mexico State, a team with a traditionally poor defense. This won’t be a defensive slog, but it won’t be a track meet, either.

UTEP at Boise State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s UTEP at Boise State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Miners pushed past Bethune-Cookman of the FCS 38-28 last Saturday, moving to 2-0 straight up for the first time since 2005. UTEP has won three games in a row at the Sun Bowl for the first time since 2014 as well. Now, the Miners hit the road and will try to keep up the consistency.

The Broncos jumped out to a 21-0 lead at UCF Sept. 2, and held a 24-14 halftime lead. However, the Knights came all the way back for a 36-31 win to send the Bounce House into pandemonium. Now, the Broncos are back on the Smurf Turf for the first time this season.

The start for UTEP (+1300) has been tremendous, but it’s not going to Boise State (-5000) and winning. However, you also can’t risk $100 on the host for only $2 in potential winnings.

AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

BOISE STATE -25.5 (-112) is the play at home. The Broncos are going to be awfully frustrated after blowing a big lead last week at UCF, and they’ll take it out on head coach Dana Dimel’s Miners.

UTEP has been a feel-good story with two early wins, but New Mexico State and FCS Bethune-Cookman aren’t in the same neighborhood as a trip to Boise State.

Over/Under

OVER 56.5 (-108) is the slight lean here, although only a small-unit play is warranted. Boise State’s offense was clicking early, and it will be able to put up a healthy amount of yardage and points here. The concern is if UTEP can get into the end zone. You’ll likely need at least two touchdowns from the Miners to eclipse the total.

UTEP at New Mexico State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UTEP at New Mexico State Week 0 matchup, with college football odds, lines, picks, predictions and best bets.

The UTEP Miners visit the New Mexico State Aggies for a season-opening battle Saturday night. The contest at Aggie Memorial Stadium is slated for a 9:30 p.m. ET kickoff. Below, we look at the UTEP vs. New Mexico State odds and lines, and make our best college football picks, predictions and bets.

UTEP went 3-5 last season. The Miners ended their season with four straight losses, but they outgained foes in three of those four setbacks. The 2021 roster returns 19 starters, including 11 for an offense that has incrementally upped its points and yards per game each of the last three seasons.

New Mexico State did not play last fall. The Aggies had a two-game spring season (against two FCS opponents) and head coach Doug Martin treated those contests like exhibition games, working in players up and down the roster. To make the Aggies even more inexperienced heading into this contest, six defensive players transferred after the 2019 season.

The 2020 COVID-19 autumn snapped a streak of 18 straight years with these two programs meeting on the gridiron. UTEP leads the all-time series, 57-38-2, but NMSU has a three-game straight-up and against-the-spread winning streak (2017-19).

UTEP at New Mexico State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

UTEP 38, New Mexico State 24

Money line

Strong-armed UTEP QB Gavin Hardison returns after an up-and-down sophomore season that saw him complete 54.3% of his passes while compiling 5 touchdowns against 5 interceptions. Hardison’s top two targets — WR Justin Garrett and WR Jacob Cowing — also return as does the entire offensive line.

Look for that group to continue to progress against a green Aggies defense. But PASS on the expensive money line.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Miners woould return a profit of just $2.50.

Against the spread

The Miners are set up in a revenge spot; the Aggies are in the unenviable position of playing real FBS football for the first time in nearly two years.

UTEP -9.5 (-120) is a good play for a win by 10 or more points.

Over/Under

Look for UTEP to control this game and get its offense in gear early. BACK THE OVER 58.5 (-120).

The UTEP Miners (2-2) visit the Arizona State Sun Devils (4-2) in a Wednesday night non-conference affair at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Ariz. Tip-off is at 9 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the UTEP-Arizona State college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

UTEP at Arizona State: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 8 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: UTEP +725 (bet $100 to win $725) | Arizona State -1250 (bet $1,250 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: UTEP +14 (-120) | Arizona State -14 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 148 (O: -115 | U: -105)

UTEP at Arizona State: Three things to know

  1. Junior G Souley Boum is shooting 54.2% (13-for-24) from 3-point range. Boum — who averaged 12.9 points per game last season — is leading the Miners in scoring in 2020-21 with 23.5 PPG.
  2. The Sun Devils are playing at home for the first time since being dumped at Desert Financial by San Diego State last Thursday. Arizona State was favored by 2 points but fell 80-68. ASU was undone on the glass (38-32) and yielded a 50.8% effective field-goal mark on defense. The Devils had been 7-1 over their previous eight games on home hardwood.
  3. Against the spread, UTEP has won four straight lined games away from home. Dating back to Jan. 23, the Miners are 5-1-2 ATS when playing on the road. UTEP covered as a 16.5-point underdog at Arizona Saturday.

UTEP at Arizona State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Arizona State 82, UTEP 72

Money line (ML)

There is some value on the Miners with the points, but the straight up action IS NOT RECOMMENDED.

Against the spread (ATS)

Arizona State has gone a mere 10-19-1 ATS since Dec. 7, 2019. Over that span, the Sun Devils have gone 5-11 ATS at home.

UTEP was within two possessions of Arizona for large swaths of the second half of Saturday’s game in Tuscon. The Miners have been solid in their two NCAA-I games and without the benefit of much production from the free-throw line or from beyond the 3-point arc.

TAKE UTEP +14 (-120).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Sun Devils swim in the deep end of the pace pool. Their pace figures rank as top-10 this season and were top-20 last. The Over is 10-6 — with six straight wins — in ASU’s last 16 contests. The Devils’ most recent three games don’t include lofty offensive totals, but two of those efforts were against good defenses.

Peg this total as depressed a bit: BACK THE OVER 148 (-115).
