Former Wisconsin quarterback transfer commits to Utah Tech

Former Wisconsin quarterback transfer commits to Utah Tech

Former Wisconsin quarterback Deacon Hill committed to Utah Tech on Saturday.

Hill re-entered the transfer portal on April 23 after spending the 2023 season with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Santa Barbara, California native originally joined the Badgers as a three-star recruit in the class of 2021. He was ranked as the No. 493 player in the class, No. 39 quarterback and No. 40 recruit from the state of California.

Hill spent 2021 and a portion of 2022 on Wisconsin’s bench behind starter Graham Mertz. He and many others entered the transfer portal in October 2022 after the Badgers fired head coach Paul Chryst.

The quarterback then committed to Iowa, where an injury to starter Cade McNamara thrust him into the starting role for a large chunk of last season. He led the Hawkeyes to a 6-1 record in his first seven games as starter, including a win over Wisconsin, and clinched a trip to the Big Ten Championship. Luck did run out in December, however, as the Hawkeyes lost both the conference title to Michigan and its bowl game to Tennessee.

The veteran quarterback now joins a Utah Tech program that competes at the FCS level in the United Athletic Conference. The program presents an opportunity for Hill to see the field with Iowa welcoming back McNamara and transfer QB Brendan Sullivan.

Hill hasn’t been with the Badgers since 2022. But his move is part of 10 of the 21 players in Wisconsin’s record-breaking class of 2021 that have entered the transfer portal or left the sport entirely. The only members of the class still in Wisconsin’s starting lineup are OT Riley Mahlman, S Hunter Wohler, LB Darryl Peterson, CB Ricardo Hallman and LB Jake Chaney.

The group’s struggles are somewhat correlated to the end of the Paul Chryst era at Wisconsin — making the class interesting to track as each recruit finishes their college career.

WBB Recap: Ducks have no answers for Utah Tech’s hot shooting

Utah Tech made 21 three-pointers and held on to defeat Oregon 92-86.

It’s simple math.

When the opponent is hitting threes and you’re answering with twos, the math isn’t going to work in your favor.

That was the case for the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team as Utah Tech made 21 three-pointers to defeat Oregon 92-86 in the Trailblazers Classic.

Those 21 bombs from the outside was just one off the school record for the Trailblazers. They were an amazing 21-of-31 from long range. Oregon wasn’t all that bad itself as the Ducks were 10-of-22 from downtown, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

Utah Tech’s Breaunna Gillan was credited with a triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

Grace VanSlooten led the way for the Ducks with 25 points and nine rebounds. Chance Gray scored 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from three-point land. Her quick trio of treys towards the end of the third quarter brought Oregon back into the game and made it a single-digit deficit at 69-64 as the fourth quarter began.

The Ducks made it a one-possession game a few times in the fourth, but never tied the game or took the lead.

Oregon falls to 8-4 on the season, while Utah Tech out of the WAC improved to 7-4. The Ducks will stay in St. George, Utah and take on Oklahoma State on Thursday for the last non-conference game of the season. Oregon opens the Pac-12 slate with the Civil War in Corvallis New Year’s Eve.

Now to the keys to victory for the Rams.

Keys to a colorado state victory

1. Play Smart

This is a get right game before conference play starts for the Rams. Don’t get too crazy, don’t overreach, and don’t get hurt. That’s what is important today. The Rams are going to win as they play a team who has given up at least 36 points in every contest. But they still must play smart.

2. Get the running game going

Vann Schield and Damian Henderson are the running backs set to go against Utah Tech as Avery Morrow is out a couple weeks with an MCL injury and Kobe Johnson is day-to-day with a back injury. Schield got some work in the second half last week and Henderson is a 4-star recruit who has some pace.

3. Get the backups in

That’s what the ultimate goal of today’s game is. Get up by a comfortable amount that the coaches feel confident in putting in the backups to get game time. The thing to watch if this is happens is at QB. Does Clay Millen get some confidence snaps or do the coaches go with a different QB?

Prediction

It’s Ag Day! The Rams are wearing pumpkin and alfalfa. They face an FCS team that, for once, they shouldn’t have trouble with. The Rams offense gets going, both running and passing, before the coaches pull on the reigns and get the backups in.

Final Score: Colorado State 49, Utah Tech 10

Utah Tech DB Darrius Nash accepts invitation to Saints rookie minicamp

Utah Tech defensive back Darrius Nash accepted an invitation to try out at New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp. He has good size for a slot corner:

A number of undrafted hopefuls will be trying out at New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp in the weeks ahead, including Utah Tech cornerback Darrius Nash. The school announced that Nash has accepted an invitation to participate at the upcoming Saints rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. If all goes well, maybe he’ll get a contract offer out of it.

Nash brings good size at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds and good-enough all-around athleticism to compete with pro talents. He predominately covered the slot but missed a lot of tackles, and he needs to play with better discipline to cut it at the NFL level. Good luck to him and the other first-years hoping to turn pro.
