Why Utah Will Win

How did the Utes do it the first time around?

They got down big early, rallied back, and rallied again with Cameron Rising running for a touchdown and the two in the final minute to beat USC 43-42 in one of the best games of the college football season.

The running game is going to continue to be a problem for the Trojans. They held up relatively well, but allowed over four yards per carry to go along with the 424 yards from Rising.

The Utah offense should be good for at least 400 yards – even if it doesn’t get to the 562 that were the most allowed by the Trojans all year – with the versatility to do whatever it wants.

Defensively, the Utes haven’t allowed more than 70 rushing yards in four of the last five games, and USC doesn’t have Travis Dye, who led the way with 76 yards in the first meeting.

Let Caleb Williams get his yards, accept that there will be a few explosive plays, and then let the offense do the work. Every third down stop and every empty USC possession will mean everything.

The pressure is ALL on the other side of the field. Utah is in the Rose Bowl with a win, and it’s probably in the Alamo if it loses. On the other side, USC has the College Football Playoff right there for the taking.

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why USC Will Win

USC had them.

It got up fast on Utah, got up late, and it couldn’t hang on against a strong team in one of the tougher environments in college football.

But it was on the road.

Utah managed to beat Washington State, but it’s 1-3 this year away from Salt Lake City against teams that finished with a winning record after going 1-4 last year against the good opponents that didn’t come to Rice-Eccles.

Yeah, that one win last year was over Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship, but the Utes had that team’s number. USC has a much, much better quarterback situation and even more firepower.

It’s not like Utah stopped the Trojan attack that rolled up 556 yards of total offense. It came up big when it had to, but Caleb Williams got off that field thinking he let one slip away.

There’s a reason he’s – probably – about to win the Heisman Trophy. Over the last three weeks he’s hitting even bigger shots down the field, he has been even more accurate, and he took his game up a few notches in the biggest games of the year. He’s handled the stress fine so far.

Yeah, the pressure is on, but there’s a way to tone that down – rely on the run defense.

The USC D might have been pounded on earlier in the year, and UCLA cranked up 204 yards, but the defense held up better over the last month, it rose up against the Notre Dame running game, and …

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Utah is going to get its yards.

The USC defensive front seemed to accept the challenge of the moment last week, but the secondary has crashed allowing over 300 yards in five of the last six games.

However, the D continues to make up for its issues with lots and lots of takeaways. The five saved the day against UCLA, the two against Notre Dame mattered, and overall the team is a whopping +24 in turnover margin.

Utah will get up fast and look like it’s in control, but Williams and the Trojans will creep on back before taking over midway through the second half after the team calms down and settles in.

It’s not going to be as much fun as the first time around, but it’ll be a blast.

One way or another, the College Football Playoff will probably be settled before Saturday.

USC vs Utah Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

The Trojans have a way of scoring when they need to.

They might not be all that consistent, and they always seem to leave points and plays on the field, but when it’s time to get the job done everything starts to work.

Caleb Williams makes a few throws, the running game comes up with a few nice dashes, and then Mario Williams or Jordan Addison makes a touchdown grab and all is right with the world.

This is hardly a perfect team, but think of it this way – it’s 6-0. When was the last time USC started a season 6-0?

2006.

So for all the jabs, and all the flaws, and all those wanting to dog the hype, Lincoln Riley is doing just fine so far.

Williams finally threw his first interception of the season two weeks ago against Arizona State, which happened to be the team’s only turnover. The team is +15 in turnover margin, No. 1 in the nation in sacks, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Utah Will Win

Utah is going to run all over the USC defense.

The Trojans have a way of playing up or down to the competition, but the one thing it’s struggling to do against everyone is stop the ground game.

ASU is the only team that didn’t get to four yards per carry, and just about everyone else flirted with five yards per pop.

Utah might have lost to UCLA last week – it still ran for 192 yards and averaged 4.5 yards per carry. The ground attack comes up with over five a try, the passing game is consistent, and it might be just that simple.

Run, rely on the big guys on the defensive front, and keep USC from running for 200 yards because …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida and UCLA were the only two teams to run on Utah for over 200 yards. Those were the two losses. Those were both on the road, and Utah is a nastier team at home.

Going back to early 2017 against Arizona, Utah is 0-10 when allowing 200 or more. USC was able to get to 200 yards on the ground against Rice and Fresno State, but that’s not going to happen in this.

USC will be great. The offense will come up with its share of big plays, Williams will be fantastic, and there will be times when it all works. And then it’ll be undone by run defense that will get steamrolled over in key moments.

Neither team will get the turnovers they’re hoping for and relying on. It’ll come down to control, and the team that’s the best in the Pac-12 in time of possession will have it.

The Ute offense will keep 13 and his amazing weapons on the sidelines way too often.

USC vs Utah Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

It’s been a rough, rough run for the Utes – more on that in a moment – but football-wise, the team has been off for a few weeks after a desperately needed 24-13 win over Washington State.

The running game started to kick it all in against the Cougars with a season-high 219 yards. This week it has to pound and pound some more against a USC defensive front that’s been fine against the mediocre, but failed against the Oregon State ground attack.

It’s a horribly inconsistent Trojan team – which you might expect considering the early season coaching change – with way too many penalties, not enough defensive plays behind the line, and too many turnovers.

The three against Washington State made it tough early, and the four against Oregon State were devastating. Utah is 2-0 when it comes up with multiple takeaways, and 0-2 when it doesn’t.

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why USC Will Win

Can the Utah passing game work?

USC’s defense has been hit-or-miss, but it should be able to hold up against the Utah running attack that’s not taking over games – Wazzu being the exception.

QB Charlie Brewer left the Ute program, and backup Cameron Rising has been okay. He threw for three touchdown passes in the loss to San Diego State, but in his two main appearances he hasn’t been able to generate enough  of a push down the field.

The Utes are miserable on third downs and they’re not doing anything to control the clock. A few early Trojan scores should end this.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a heartbreaking year for Utah.

Last year’s leading rusher Ty Jordan died in an accidental shooting in December, and a few weeks ago the program lost defensive back Aaron Lowe in a shooting incident. Obviously, this will be a tough, emotional game considering all the Utes have been through.

On the field, USC will get off to its usual unsettled start. The Utah lines will be great right away, and the Trojan offense won’t look sharp, but that will all change in the second half with a scoring run.

Utah doesn’t have the passing game to mount a comeback as the game slips away early in the fourth.

Why Utah Will Win

Utah seemed to be cruising right along for a while in the Pac-12 Tournament first round against Washington, but it turned into a wild firefight in a 98-95 Ute win.

Utah’s defense might have struggle, but the offense was devastating from the outside, hitting 14-of-26 from three and now it has to bomb away and push a USC team that can play D, but isn’t always a rock at stopping the three.

The Utes have won three of their last four games and one was against the Trojans, hitting everything from the outside and stuffing the USC three point shooting in the 71-61 win.

The ability is there to pull this off if the threes are dropping, but …

Why USC Will Win

Utah can’t rebound. It’s one of the worst teams in the country at hitting the boards, and it showed in the first meeting with the Trojans – a 64-46 USC win – going -11 in rebounding margin.

USC might be struggling a wee bit lately offensively, but the defense has been enough of a wall to step up and make up for the loss a few weeks ago. It starts by owning the boards, and continues with the defense cranking up the intensity now that the lights are on.

What’s Going To Happen

USC has had a big, big problem stopping the three.

Three of the last four teams hit 55% or better from the outside, and that includes Utah. The Utes will connect on their shots from three to stay in the game, but they’re not going to hit enough of the other shots to pull this off.

It’ll be ragged, but USC will survive late as the Utah O goes cold in the final few minutes.

USC (19-5) vs Utah (9-11) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why USC Will Win

Utah has fallen off the map.

It was on a good run and looked like it was about to make some noise, but the brutal run of seven road games in eight dates seems to have beaten the team down.

The offense just doesn’t score enough – it hasn’t hit 70 points in any of the last four games – and it’s not manufacturing enough points with steals, big defensive plays, or getting to the rim.

The Trojans should own the boards against a Ute team that just doesn’t get anything on the glass.

Why Utah Will Win

Speaking of free throws, USC is bad at it. It gets to the line, but it only hits 65% of the time – that was a problem in the losses to Arizona and Colorado.

For Utah, though, it has to get hot from the field again. It’s not always great from three, but that matters. This isn’t a team that can overcome a bad shooting night, and it’s going to take hitting 50% from the field to do this.

It was 3-1 during a great run of shooting, and it’s 0-4 over the last four games when it hasn’t been able to get past the 45% mark. USC lost on the road a few days ago to a Colorado team that hit 47% from the field and 55% from three. The Trojan D might be great, but it’s struggling a bit lately.

What’s Going To Happen

USC’s defense is going to be too good and too strong, and its ability to hit the boards will overcome a rough shooting day to get over the clunker in Colorado.

Utah won’t generate enough USC mistakes to stop a few good scoring runs.

USC (2-0) vs Utah (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why USC Will Win

USC hasn’t played all that well, and it’s still been able to get to 2-0 with late heroics, a good enough passing games and with just enough control of the game and the clock to at least stay alive late.

That’s hardly what was expected out of the Trojans against two teams – Arizona State and Arizona – they should’ve beaten easily, but in this weird year that’s so disjointed, just getting to 2-0 is good enough.

Utah has yet to get its first game out of the way as the only team left who’s expected to play who hasn’t been had a game yet. This is going to be a strong Ute team, but it lost nine of its top 11 tacklers and has a new starting offensive backfield that needs to be broken in. As long as the USC pass rush continues to be strong, and if there aren’t a ton of mistakes, everything should be okay. However …

CFN Experts Picks, Predictions: Week 12

Why Utah Will Win

The USC defense hasn’t been good enough.

Arizona State was able to run well – and it took a miracle for USC to get out alive – and Arizona hit on too many big shots to almost hit 300 yards through the air. Utah might be changing a whole lot on both sides of the ball, but it has the lines that Arizona State and Arizona don’t.

Utah should do a better job of blasting away, and the run defense should hold up against a USC ground game that’s fine, but hasn’t been quite strong enough to get into a grinding battle.

More than anything else …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Something is missing with USC.

Again, 2-0 is 2-0 is 2-0, but the energy hasn’t quite been there over the first two games, the team isn’t sharp, and even though Kedon Slovis is hitting 71% of his passes and he threw for over 700 yards in the first two games, he hasn’t been quite right.

Utah has a certain level it’s been able to maintain over the last several years, and the loss of so many starters shouldn’t matter all that much, but the secondary is going through an overhaul against a team with a big passing game and two warm-up games.

It’s not going to be easy, but USC will slip out with a third straight close-call win in what should amount to the Pac-12 South championship.
