Why Colorado Will Win

The USC defense can be hammered on.

The run defense was the problem over the first part of the season, the secondary is suffering over the last three weeks, and worst of all, the takeaways have slowed down after making up for mistakes with lots and lots of big plays early on.

Colorado might not be having a ton of fun, but the passing game has been putting up yards and the ground attack hasn’t been that awful.

Turnovers are a big issue, but again, USC’s D has slowed with four takeaways over the last five games after coming up with 16 in the first four weeks.

Why USC Will Win

The offense is relentless.

The defense might be hit or miss, and the O might go through a few stretches when it takes a little nap, but Caleb Williams will throw for over 300 yards, the running game will run for close to six yards per carry, and the attack has the ability to put this out of reach fast.

Colorado is dead last in the nation in third down stops and is the second-worst against the run. It’s been a little bit better after a brutal start, but it’s still a problem.

USC isn’t going to take a whole lot of chances. It’ll run, let the offensive line take over, and the O that only turned the ball over two times so far – the first lost fumble of the season came last week against Cal – isn’t going to give the Buff D any breaks.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s USC, so there will be moments when the team loses its focus and Colorado will look like it can play.

And then the Trojan offense will go off.

This will be the calm before the storm. USC get UCLA, then Notre Dame, and if all goes well, a shot at the Pac-12 title and a spot in the College Football Playoff after that.

Style points count now. There will be plenty of them.

Why USC Will Win

The USC passing game still works, and the Colorado offense doesn’t.

The Trojans can’t get the ground attack going over the last few weeks, and no matter who’s throwing the ball, the production is there with 754 yards over the last two weeks to make up for the other issues.

Colorado could run in the loss to Minnesota, couldn’t throw in the loss to Arizona State, and hasn’t thrown for over 100 yards in any of the last three games and only 102 against Northern Colorado. The Buffs are among the worst in the country in total offense, passing efficiency, and scoring.

USC has this if it just puts a few points on the board.

Why Colorado Will Win

The defense has been able to make things interesting.

It got rolled over by Minnesota, but the pass defense was fine. It almost did enough to pull off what would’ve been a shocking win over Texas A&M, and it’s been able to grind things down just enough to keep things close – at least for a while.

For all of the good things USC is doing, it’s not pushing the ball down the field on offense, and the defense isn’t doing anything to get into the backfield. At the very least, the Colorado O will have time to work.

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado will fight the good fight, but the offense just isn’t working.

USC will sputter along, it’ll start slow, and then it’ll all kick in just enough to pull away early in the second half. The Buffs won’t be able to keep up any sort of a pace.

Why Colorado Will Win

Does USC have any legs left?

It had to fight through a double-overtime thrilling over Utah, winning 91-85 with plenty of big runs and a whole lot of emotion and energy on both ends to get by.

Enter Colorado, who’s able to play a fast style when it needs to, but its better at clamping down defensively and getting nasty and tough on the boards at both ends. That came through in the 80-62 win over the Trojans a few weeks ago, and also in a ten-point win in late December.

The Buffs got pushed way too hard by a bad Cal team in a 61-58 win in the Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinals, but when the defense had to come through, it did.

However …

Why USC Will Win

Colorado couldn’t make a thing from three against the Bears and it struggled from the field.

The Buffs didn’t have to expend the same sort of energy or fight, but it wasn’t able to rest for a moment in a game that should’ve been far more relaxing and fun.

Yes, Colorado was able to win in the first two meetings with its offense, and it’s not like the Utah win was a defensive slugfest, but the Trojans have the D, they have the ability make big things happen on the board, and they generally do both things better than Colorado. But …

What’s Going To Happen

Something is missing.

USC should be a whole lot stronger considering its defensive chops and its ability to lock down and force teams to go dead cold for long stretches. However, the scoring punch isn’t there on a regular basis, and teams are doing too well from three lately to shoot over this D.

Colorado might not have been great against Cal, but it’s got the ability to play the type of defensive low-scoring games that USC thrives in.

Be shocked if this isn’t close and stunned if it doesn’t come down to the final 90 seconds. Colorado leads the nation in free throw percentage, and USC is one of the worst teams in the country at the line.

Why USC Will Win

USC seemed to have figured out that when it’s able to get its defense working and the energy is there, there isn’t much of a problem.

It got outworked and outplayed by Arizona a few days ago in a loss, and then ramped it all back up in a blowout over Oregon two days later.

When the blocked shots are there, the aggressiveness is happening on the boards, and the defense does what it does so well – it’s one of the best in the nation in field goal percentage D – everything else falls into place.

Colorado doesn’t shoot well enough, but …

Why Colorado Will Win

The Buffaloes shot the ball just fine in a 72-62 win on the road at USC on the last day of 2020. Actually, they didn’t, but the defense was phenomenal, and that’s what it does so well.

USC is better at keeping teams from scoring consistently, but Colorado is the best in the Pac-12 and one of the best in the nation in scoring D. It’s great at grinding games down and keeping them in the 60s.

Do that, get to the free throw line, and the Buffs have this. They’re No. 1 in the nation at hitting free throws, making 83% of them. USC? It’s one of the worst in the nation at the freebies making just 65% of them.

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado has been away from home for way too long.

It’s been an interesting year, going away for four straight and being away from the Events Center in 15 of the 24 games. It’s going to keep the score low, this is going to be a defensive fight, and yes, it’ll come down to who hits their free throws.

The Buffs will be better at it.

Why Colorado Will Win

The Colorado offense has been surprisingly strong so far.

This isn’t one of the Pac-12’s top teams, but the passing game has been solid, the running attack fine, and best of all, the team is doing all the key things right in the first two games.

The offense is taking advantage of every opportunity to score, the team is +4 in turnover margin – the O has only given it away once – and keeping the chains moving is leading to a dominant time of possession advantage.

USC isn’t consistent enough, it’s not converting on enough third downs, and turnovers have been a problem. Weirdest of all, though, the downfield passing game isn’t working like it should be – this is supposed to be an explosive offense that’s dinking and dunking.

Considering it an ongoing positive that USC keeps winning even though it’s not playing well.

It didn’t have to rally in the final moments to get by Utah last week, and it was the team’s strongest defensive performance so far, but this is a better team than it has shown. At some point, it’s all going to come together, and then … look out.

For all of the good thing Colorado has done over its first two games, there’s no pass rush, and that’s leading to a whole lot of passing yards – UCLA and Stanford each came up with more than 300 yards.

Kedon Slovis has been good enough, but again, that light bulb will turn out for this offense soon.

What’s Going To Happen

USC got the good fortune of getting three straight teams playing their opener. Colorado has two games under its belt, it’s – for the most part – playing with house money after winning two games to kick off the Karl Dorrell era, and it’s going to play loose.

The Trojans are going to be in for a bit of a shootout, but they’ll pull away late with two fourth quarter scoring drives to start to breathe a whole lot easier.
