Iowa women’s basketball rises in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Thanks to its Cy-Hawk victory, Iowa is rising in the latest USA TODAY Sports Women’s College Basketball Coaches Poll.

Even after a week of mixed results for Iowa women’s basketball (9-2, 0-1 Big Ten), the Hawkeyes have risen two spots in the latest USA TODAY Sports Women’s College Basketball Coaches Poll to the No. 22 position.

While Iowa suffered a 68-66 loss to then-No. 19 Michigan State (10-0, 1-0 Big Ten) on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich., the voters most likely viewed the two-point defeat as a minor setback.

Plus, the Hawkeyes had just claimed a comeback victory over higher-ranked No. 17 Iowa State (9-3, 0-0 Big 12) just days before.

Iowa’s No. 22 ranking matches the position given to them by the most recent AP Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Poll on Dec. 16, which should not vary much, with a Friday home matchup vs. Northern Iowa being the only contest for the Hawkeyes before next week’s poll release.

As for the remainder of the Big Ten, UCLA remains undefeated and atop the coaches poll, listed as the country’s No. 1 team.

The Bruins are followed by Big Ten foes USC at No. 7, Maryland at No. 8, Ohio State at No. 9, Michigan State at No. 17 and Michigan at No. 25.

The lone Big Ten program dropping out of the top 25 rankings from last week was Illinois, which received 30 points this week.

Other Big Ten teams receiving points include Nebraska, who earned 43 points, and Wisconsin, collecting 15.

Where did the Oklahoma Sooners land in the latest USA TODAY Sports WBB Coaches Poll?

Where did the Oklahoma Sooners land in the latest USA TODAY Sports Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll ahead of the Jumpman Invitational?

The Oklahoma Sooners are preparing to face off against the Michigan Wolverines in what will be a top 25 matchup in the Jumpman Invitational. Oklahoma tips off against the Wolverines Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

The Oklahoma Sooners stayed at No. 11 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Michigan moved into the poll this week, coming in at No. 25.

The undefeated UCLA Bruins are the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation, followed by defending national champion South Carolina, who moved up one spot to No. 2 in the latest poll. LSU, also undefeated at 12-0, comes in at No. 3, followed by Notre Dame at No. 4 and UConn at No. 5. The Huskies dropped three places in this week’s poll.

The Texas Longhorns are the third-highest-ranked SEC team, landing at No. 6 in the nation this week. At No. 11, the Sooners are the fourth-highest-ranked SEC squad at this point in the season.

The Sooners have been led by Raegan Beers, but senior guard Payton Verhulst is beginning to heat up as well, providing the Sooners with an inside-outside scoring presence. The Sooners have four players scoring in double figures and six players averaging seven points per game this season.

The Sooners are sixth in the nation in field goal percentage in 2024-2025, shooting 50% from the field. That while they’re only shooting a surprising 34.5% from three, which is No. 73 in the nation. If they can find a more consistent three-point stroke, they’ll be even more dangerous with the work Beers, Skylar Vann, and Sahara Williams are doing on the inside.

Florida moves up in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after perfect November

The best start for Florida basketball since 2009 has the Gators up to No. 13 in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Thanksgiving week featured a ton of college basketball, and some surprise finishes led to changes in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Florida ended the month of November undefeated (8-0) and the Gators are now ranked No. 13 in the country following a convincing win at the ESPN Events Invitational (Wake Forest, Wichita State).

The Orange and Blue began the season at No. 21 in the preseason rankings, moved up to No. 19 in the Week 1 and Week 2 updates and jumped to No. 16 a week ago. Florida now trails Alabama by 14 poll points and has a sizable 51-point lead over Cincinnati.

The top five went through some dramatic changes this week. Kansas remains at No. 1 but is no longer the runaway favorite for the title of the best team in the country. Auburn earned 12 of 31 first-place votes and moved up to No. 2 as UConn plummeted out of the top 25 with a three-loss tournament.

Tennessee moved into the top three, an undefeated Marquette team is up to No. 4 and Iowa State remains at No. 5 this week.

SEC schools in the Coaches Poll top 25

Even with the Arkansas Razorbacks falling out of the top 25, the Southeastern Conference boasts eight programs — including Florida — in the top 25. Auburn (No. 2) remains the highest-ranked team in the SEC, followed Tennessee (No. 3), the Kentucky Wildcats (No. 6), Alabama (No. 12), Florida (No. 13), the Ole Miss Rebels (No. 20) and Texas A&M Aggies (No. 24).

The Texas Longhorns earned 54, making them the de facto No. 28 team in the country, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs are right behind them in a tie for No. 29 with 39 poll points this week. Arkansas is unofficially No. 31 with 28 points, and the Georgia Bulldogs are No. 46 with three points.

After their huge week, the Oklahoma Sooners entered the USA TODAY College Basketball Coaches Poll for the first time this season, earning the No. 21 spot in the top 25. The Sooners are one of nine teams that are undefeated in the coaches poll, which is led by Kansas, Auburn, Tennessee, and Marquette as the top four teams this week.

Kansas received 19 first place votes while Auburn picked up the other 12. The SEC led the way with eight teams featured in the poll this week, with OU seventh in the conference, just one spot behind No. 20 Ole Miss.

Oklahoma has a chance to build on their undefeated start to the season at home against the ACC’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in what will be a strong nonconference test Tuesday night.
