Here are the rest of the New Year’s Six bowl game projections from USA TODAY Sports:

USA TODAY Sports Bowl Projections: A reunion with former coach Mack Brown

In the latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports, the Texas Longhorns would face off against their former head coach Mack Brown.

Sitting at 5-2 (4-2), the Texas Longhorns should be making plans for their upcoming bowl appearance. Under Tom Herman the Longhorns are 3-0 in the postseason games. In the last two they defeated two top 12 teams in the Utah Utes and Georgia Bulldogs.

In the latest projection from Paul Myerberg, the Longhorns will head to the Cheez-It Bowl. This projection has a reunion of sorts as they would face Mack Brown and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Before taking the job at Texas in 1998, Brown was the head coach for UNC from 1988-97. He returned to that post after a six-year hiatus from coaching after leaving Texas in 2013.

This bowl game would bring plenty of storylines, including Brown coaching against the team he helped guide to a National Championship over USC and an appearance in another BCS National Championship game against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

[lawrence-related id=26678,25520,21337]

The other big storyline being the battle of the Sam’s at quarterback. The Longhorns have Sam Ehlinger while the Tar Heels roll with Sam Howell. It might be one of the most-watched non New Year Six bowl games just based on the ties between the two schools.

The Longhorns hold a 6-3 edge in the all-time series. The first game between Texas and North Carolina came in Austin back in 1947. They haven’t played each other since 2002. The Tar Heels hold the 2-1 edge in bowl games.

USA TODAY Sports Bowl Projections: Texas to play Miami (FL) in Cheez-It Bowl

USA TODAY Sports is projecting Texas to face off against Miami in the Cheez-It Bowl. It would be the fifth matchup between the two schools.

Texas’ season took a turn for the better on the field, defeating No. 6 Oklahoma State on the road in a thrilling game. After back to back losses to TCU and Oklahoma, the Longhorns have their first win streak throughout Big 12 play.

Just as they moved up in the conference standings, Texas moved up in the latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections. Last week, the Longhorns were in the Autozone Liberty Bowl against Tennessee of the SEC.

[lawrence-related id=25751]

Now, USA TODAY Sports is projecting Texas to face off another historic program, the Miami Hurricanes, in the Cheez-It Bowl. It would be the fifth matchup between the two schools, dating back to 1972. Miami’s Cotton Bowl victory after the 1990 season was the last time they met.

The Hurricanes are one of the best teams in the ACC, sitting at 5-1. The singular loss came to Clemson, the current No. 1 team in the country per the Amway Coaches poll and the AP poll.

[lawrence-related id=26068,26060]

Miami head coach Manny Diaz spent time of the 40 Acres, serving as the defensive coordinator in the final three seasons of the Mack Brown era. He was eventually fired after allowing 550 rushing yards to BYU.

As for the present day, Diaz has one of the top defenses in the country. The Hurricanes are only giving up 22.2 points per game. Defensive end Quincy Roche has been the star of the show, acquiring 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in six games.

Offensively, quarterback D’Eriq King is one of the most electrifying players in the country. A transfer from Houston, King has thrown for 1,398 yards for 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. He is just as dangerous on the ground, averaging 4.5 yards per carry for a total of 301 yards.

If Texas and Miami do meet in the Cheez-It Bowl, it will take place in Orlando, Florida at the Camping World Stadium. The game will take place on Dec. 29, 2020.

USA TODAY Sports Bowl Projections: ‘The Battle of UT’

Latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports, the Texas would face off with the Tennessee Volunteers. They haven’t played since 1969.

Recently ESPN released their weekly bowl projections that pit the Texas Longhorns against their “rivals” the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Longhorns currently sit at 3-2 and fifth in the conference standings. Which likely means they are fifth in line for their bowl selection. If the Oklahoma State Cowboys don’t get a New Years Six game then that pushes them down into a less attractive bowl matchup.

According to USA TODAY Sports, they are currently projected to play in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. Their opponent would be the “other” UT. Texas and Tennessee could matchup in this matchup for Big 12 against the Southeastern Conference. For years the two fan bases have battled over who is the real UT when it comes to talking about their team. In this scenario they can settle it on the football field. The game is played at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee.

In their history the Volunteers and Longhorns have met on the football season three times total. The last came in 1969 when the Longhorns won 36-13 at the Cotton Bowl. They were awarded the 1969 Consensus National Championship. They have never met in the regular season but instead at the Cotton Bowl three times. They met in 1951 when the Vols won 20-14, then again in 1953 where the Longhorns won 16-0. Texas owns the all-time series lead 2-1 but they have not met on the football field in 50 years.
