Arkansas up one spot in AFCA USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Arkansas is ranked No. 24 in the coaches poll ahead of bowl season.

With all the moving and shaking in college football on Friday and Saturday, there were bound to be changes in slotting even those who didn’t play.

Arkansas, eight days after last playing against Missouri in the regular season finale, moved from No. 25 to No. 24 in the AFCA USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

The Hogs finished the year 8-4 with three of its four losses to No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia and No. 8 Ole Miss. It was the most successful regular season since 2011 when the team went 10-2.

Other SEC teams ranked were Kentucky at No. 20 and Texas A&M at No. 23.

Arkansas was waiting Sunday morning to hear its bowl destination on the College Football Playoff Selection Show. The bowl will be Arkansas’ first since 2016.

As expected, Oregon and Utah finish regular season as Pac-12’s best in USA TODAY Coaches Poll

The Pac-12 had two teams in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll Top-25

[mm-video type=video id=01fnp7026jqzac9a63bq playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fnp7026jqzac9a63bq/01fnp7026jqzac9a63bq-6d93cd642c93f54b3b62d037b00a00cb.jpg]

Regardless of what happens in Saturday’s awkward Cal vs. USC makeup game, the Pac-12’s stature in this week’s USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll will likely go unchanged following the upcoming slew of conference championship games.

In what was a bumpy regular season for the Pac-12, it ultimately ended with its two best teams — Oregon and Utah — fighting for the conference title on Friday. The Ducks and Utes’ dominance this season was reflected in the penultimate coaches poll prior to bowl season.

Utah, which beat Oregon 38-7 on Nov. 20, was a season-high No. 17 in the poll, and the Ducks ended their regular season at No. 10.

Even though the Utes were just one of two nine-win teams in the top-20, they made a strong case to be ranked even higher considering their dominance of Oregon and them ending the regular season on a five-game win streak. They do, however, have a chance to leapfrog Oregon if they can beat the Ducks for the second time this season.

Rounding out the Pac-12 in the poll was UCLA. The Bruins didn’t make the top-25, but they did receive three votes.

And for Colorado, the Buffs finished the season without ever receiving a vote in the poll. But there’s always next year!

How did the Big Ten do in the latest USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll?

For a good portion of this college football season, the Big Ten laid claim to being the most dominant conference in the sport with four teams at one point in the top 10 of the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. The natural winnowing of the regular season has produced greater parity in the poll over the last few weeks, but the Big Ten are still leading strongly among the rest of college football’s top programs.

Four Big Ten programs are ranked in the top half of the poll, more than any other conference.

The SEC has three top 10 teams, no surprise there, with No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama leading the way. Ole Miss, at eighth, holds steady on the weekend.

The Big 12 has two top 10 teams with No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 8 Baylor. The Pac-12 has just No. 10 Oregon in the top 10. The ACC doesn’t have a team ranked until No. 15 Pittsburgh (up two spots).

Razorbacks No. 25 in AFCA USA TODAY Coaches Poll to end regular season

Arkansas’ defeat of Missouri in the season finale capped the Hogs’ best season since 2011.

After finishing its best regular season in a decade, Arkansas found itself back in the Top 25.

The Razorbacks (8-4, 4-4) were one spot outside the AFCA USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll last week. But a 34-17 win over Missouri on Friday combined with some losses by teams near the bottom of the rankings to lift Arkansas back to No. 25

Arkansas win snapped a five-game losing streak to the Tigers and provided the SEC with six teams ranked in the poll. On Saturday, for the first time in conference history, the SEC had 13 of its 14 teams reach bowl eligibility. Only Vanderbilt failed to qualify.

The other teams in the coaches poll were No. 1 Georgia. No. 2 Alabama, No. 8 Ole Miss, No. 22 Kentucky and No. 23 Texas A&M.

Arkansas could know its bowl destination as soon as Monday, but it’s more likely to be a few days or even next weekend at the conclusion of the conference championships across FBS.

Colorado’s final opponent, Utah, rises six spots in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Utah just keeps getting better

[mm-video type=video id=01fn1xhjnybe44ch1e4n playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fn1xhjnybe44ch1e4n/01fn1xhjnybe44ch1e4n-e41c6db6b1cd5d39b80f8b17b4918e9e.jpg]

After starting the season 1-2, Utah isn’t messing around anymore. The Utes have won seven of their last eight and now sit prominently at No. 19 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Utah, which was No. 25 in last week’s poll, jumped six spots thanks to a dominating 38-7 win over now-No. 11 Oregon. For the Ducks, this ugly loss now exhausts any hope of them representing the Pac-12 in the College Football Playoff. Cincinnati, anyone?

The Utes clinched the Pac-12 South with the win and will face either Oregon, Washington State or Oregon State in the Pac-12 Championship Game on Dec. 3. But first, Utah has one final tune-up against yours truly, Colorado.

While the Buffs are no longer bowl eligible, a strong performance could impact which bowl game the Utes are chosen for. Currently, a spot in the Alamo Bowl seems likely for them, according to Jerry Palm of CBS Sports.

Colorado and Utah will battle in Salt Lake City on Friday at 2 p.m. MT on FOX.

Arkansas falls out of AFCA USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after loss to Alabama

Arkansas drops from the coaches’ rankings after Saturday’s close defeat.

Arkansas may have have given Alabama everything it had Saturday, but national coaches dinged the Razorbacks on Sunday.

Arkansas entered the game against the No. 2 Crimson Tide as the No. 22 team in the nation in the AFCA USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Less than 24 hours later, when the new poll was released, the Razorbacks found themselves on the outside, a de facto No. 26, picking up the most points for any team unranked.

The game against Alabama was the closest the Hogs had played against Nick Saban’s team since a 14-13 Alabama win in 2014. The Crimson Tide’s victory clinched the SEC West and a meeting against Georgia in the SEC title game on December 4.

The Razorbacks would almost certainly finish the regular-season inside the Top 25 with a win in the season finale against Missouri and another team’s loss. Arkansas hosts the Tigers on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

Other SEC teams in the Top 25 include No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Alabama, No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 25 Kentucky. Mississippi State joined Arkansas in receiving votes, checking in at a de facto No. 28.

Utah sneaks into USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Colorado’s final regular season opponent has caught fire in recent weeks

[mm-video type=video id=01fmfv07yrq9g2ma6ygp playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fmfv07yrq9g2ma6ygp/01fmfv07yrq9g2ma6ygp-d582496b375097ded413d191f7b51335.jpg]

The Utah Utes are catching fire at the right time of the season. Following three consecutive wins, they lead the Pac-12 South at 6-1 with two regular season games remaining

Utah’s 38-29 win over Arizona wasn’t particularly pretty, but the Utes’ recent dominance was reflected in this week’s USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll with a 25th place ranking. This marks a strong jump for the Utes, who received just 34 points last week. It was also their first time back in the top 25 since ranking 18th after Week 2.

Their momentum should be a scary sight for Colorado fans with the Buffaloes facing Utah in the regular season finale on Nov. 26. Colorado isn’t bowl eligible anymore but could play Pac-12 South spoiler depending on what happens in Week 12.

The only other Pac-12 school in the top 25 was, of course, Oregon at No. 6. Oregon and Utah battle this week in what could be a Pac-12 Championship Game preview.

Arizona State, which beat Washington in Week 11, received two votes in the poll and still has a chance to win the Pac-12 South at 5-2. The Sun Devils will be rooting for a Utah loss while taking on Oregon State this weekend.

Arkansas re-enters AFCA USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Arkansas is back inside the coaches poll top 25 after knocking off LSU on Saturday night.

A night win in Death Valley and the Razorbacks are ranked again.

Arkansas beat LSU, 16-13, on Saturday night in overtime when Cam Little’s 27-yard field goal sent the Hogs sideline into a blitz onto the field to pick up the Golden Boot. About 18 hours later, Arkansas re-entered the rankings.

The Hogs check-in at No. 22 in AFCA USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll for Week 11. Arkansas had spent the last three weeks on the outside, going anywhere from a de facto No. 26 to No. 29. Coach Sam Pittman’s team did crack the College Football Playoff rankings last week, though, despite their absence from the two traditional polls.

No more. Arkansas is 7-3 with two games remaining in the regular season. Its opponent in the penultimate game is Alabama, which is ranked No. 2 in the poll. The Hogs then finish the year with Missouri the day after Thanksgiving.

In all, five teams in the SEC were ranked. Georgia stayed at No. 1. Alabama was No. 2. Ole Miss is No. 10. Texas A&M fell five spots to No. 16. Auburn dropped out of the poll, but was joined in receiving votes by Kentucky (26th) and Mississippi State (30th).
